Genocyber (1994)
Confusing And Atmospheric.
Genocyber is a film that trys to do something radical and new. Strangely it fails and succeeds. After watching this movie you'll be able to say you've never seen anything like it before.
The first thing that must be said about Genocyber is the plot doesn't or won't make a lot of sense (on first viewing any). After watching it a few times though I still struggle to make sense of it. This is one of the two bad points of the movie. The second negative side to the film is the overwhelming amount of gore and violence. It really will phase you the first time you see thousands of limbs and internal organs scattered around a hospital or when someone rips open their head to spill all their brains on the floor. Totally disgusting but....
Perhaps this violence is deliberete. It definitely adds to the whole atmosphere of the film and this is Genocybers strong point. The atomosphere. The superb errie soundtrack, the halucagenic camerwork and, of course, the extreme violence all meld together to create a strange but fascinating film.
Genocyber is 'alternative cinema' more than it is 'cyberpunk'. It's well worth seeing if you get the chance but don't rush out because it's not to everyones taste.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
One of the worst.
On paper the film sounds great. Kids getting stalked around the forest by some unknown thing. Tension, suspense and terror would obviously be key ingredients to. Oh, and best of all, the real twist is that the film will be shot using a tacky home video camera. Wow, the prospective film viewer is saying, this sounds awesome. Well, sorry to dissapoint you folks who haven't seen this film yet, but this is the tackiest horror film ever. There is no suspense. There are no sudden frights that boost the viewers adreniline. There are no memorable scenes. Nope, there's just a linear plotline, crappy film footage, annoying characters who we just couldn't care less about and not a scary thing in sight. When the film ends, quicker than most a might add, the initial feeling I was left with is 'Is that it?'. There isn't even a bad 'thing' in this film. All we're treated to is a bunch of annoying characters running loco around a forest everytime they hear an insect crack a fart outside. Avoid this film like the plague because you will only feel down afterwards for spending the two bucks to rent the damn thing in the first place.
Project A-Ko Versus (1990)
A fitting end.
The final instalment in the Project Ako series gives you just what you want. To leave on a high of adrenaline. Don't bother watching this if you haven't seen the rest of the series as it will just spoil everything Ako works hard to create. Watch the series and then marvel in delight at a great final chapter.
Purojekuto A-ko (1986)
Finest Anime Ever
Projetc A-ko is a rare anime. It is an anime that can appeal to a lot of people without having to resort to head-popping violence, grotesque sex or extreme swearing. Project A-ko is funny and the more you watch it, the more you get out of it. The number of in jokes are astonishing, the characters are extremely funny, the tempo of the movie is upbeat and always leaves you on a high. If you're after a highly enjoyable anime, start here because nothing surpasses it. Incidentally, watching all 6 movies is also highly reccomended as on its one Project A-ko is a funny but as a series, it is an anime classic.
