Die Another Day (2002)
They Broke the Rules...
"Improbable but not impossible.", has always been the rule-of-thumb for the Bond franchise. Die Another Day not only promotes the impossible but simply throws out the law of physics! Invisible car?? Sonic Ring?? World Record High Dive?? Fortress of Solitude?? Wind Surfing on a Glacial Tidalwave?? Seems our "hero" and "a man that everyman wanted to be and every woman wanted", has been reduced to a not-so-clever, but extremely lucky, comic book character. What is instore for the dumb-wited masses in the next segment of the franchise? Magic ruby slippers or will bond simply catch bullets with his teeth? The dialogue seems to be written by Bevis and Butthead ("hehe hehe... she said COCKFIGHT! hehe hehe"). The classic and best Bonds rely more heavily upon outwitting the bad guys in a chessgame played upon the audience who were more interested in the next move than in a flashy show of special effects without thought. Die Another Day is definatley a new low, and sadly mimics a spoof. It is no longer the standard of spy thrillers. Cubby Broccoli's legacy has been betrayed.
Start the Revolution Without Me (1970)
Give me the DVD now!
Why is Start the Revolution Without Me my favorite comedy? It's so frikken funny, thats why! I just can't wait for the DVD, because, frankly video tape sucks. Sutherland and Wilder, at the beginning of their careers, show us tremendous talent in separating the individual personalities of two sets of twins.... ok all I am going to say is.. if you like comedy, rent this one and get ready to laugh.
The Bourne Identity (2002)
Wham Bam Thankyou Ma'am
I went into this movie not knowing what it was about. Although the plot is not too original, the editing and the actors filling these rolls, are! I loved this (definately can't wait for the DVD). This movie kept my attention from beginning till end. It's a combination of Luc Besson meets Spy Game and the Saint. The really nice thing about this flick is that it is believable (except the falling down the stairshaft riding the dead guy). Ok you can listen to all the other critics bitch and moan that it's not perfect to their satisfaction, but if you love movies like me, especially action, watch this at least twice! Way to go Matt!
Ten to Chi to (1990)
Spectacular!
You're in for an action packed treat if you rent this tonight..that is if you can find it. Hey it's a Japanese movie about 2 warlords. One noble and defensive, forgoing all worldly pleasures to protect what he rules. The other, ambitious, ruthless, and even more powerful. The clashes of over 10,000 samuri on the battlefield is breathtaking. Forget historical accuracy...after all wasn't Tombstone just a bit better than Wyatt Earp?
Scrooge (1970)
A message for all.
We tend to think of Christmas Classics in terms of Rudolf the Red Nose Raindeer or It's a Wonderful Life, and justly right we are. This rendition of Dicken's Christmas Carol with Finney's performance is the best of all. For some reason this film's humor, sadness, love-lost, and respect found, story captures not only a true seasonal classic, but one that should be watched throughout the year. One of Finney's greatest performances. This one strikes at the heart of our souls, especially since it's meaning has more merit for our culture of consumers. Ok maybe that's going a little deep, but watch this classic and see if it touches you.
Cromwell (1970)
A Treasure!
What a supreme example of some of the finest acting that British Film has to offer. Some liken it to Braveheart due to the battle footage and simulare plot, but the acting, the passion of this epic, fills your mind with a depth that no high budget studio, today, would dare undertake. Highly recommended. My only wish is to find this in DVD format in my mailbox. Meld Elizabeth and Braveheart together and you still are outweighed by this epic.
The Prince of Egypt (1998)
Big names just don't cut it.
Watching the Prince of Egypt makes me appreciate what a brilliant and touching film Cecil B DeMille's classic, The Ten Commandments, was. I was glad to see that special effects of the computer animations is top rate. This film was of an important topic, yet such a terrible sceenplay and voice casting dwindled this would be classic to a mere Saturday cartoon with Moses coming across like a village idiot. If this was a musical then why does it sound like Song of the South than of the bible.
Again top marks to the animators but the story line and the lack of passion from the big named stars just doesn't cut it. Danny Glover I give exception too and thought his part was well voiced.
