Made Men (1999)
WOW!
It is so rare that I get to rate a movie without having some reservation as to whether I should have gone up one or down one but this one.....Did the explosion rate a notch higher, or one down because my brain hurt trying to CREATE a plot. No, THIS ONE....yeah, a solid, no brainer.....ONE/ten
The Pledge (2001)
Waste of Talent!
What a great cast! What a waste of talent! There was a lot of potential for this film but not one aspect of it ever developed. I agree with the one person who commented that Nicholson looked as if he were as bored with the film and ready to fall asleep in most of the scenes. This was one of the most predictable and weakest stories I have ever watched. Summary: Waste of Time!
Kalifornia (1993)
Wanted to rate it higher but.....
This is a good movie - if only those doggone southern accents hadn't sounded so contrived, it really detracted from the finer points of this movie. I think most of us can say we've known someone who, at least a little bit, remind of us Early Grayce - some that have come oh so close to dropping that penny.
One of the things I really like about this film is the relationships that occur between Early and Brian, and Adele and Carrie. Movies often focus on one or the other, but Kalifornia manages to take on both, AND make them both believable.
Ignore the obviously contrived accents and focus on the characters themselves and I think most people (who like the genre) will find this a worthwhile film.
Mindwalk (1990)
Physics 101 with Dr. Ullmann
An interesting film which manipulates three distinctly different characters by a fairly simple physics lesson. I don't say this to demean the film, quite the contrary, it is just this principal that the story emphasizes - if you isolate any one subject (science, politics, art) from any other part of life, then it really serves no purpose. The dark side of me would have written quite a different ending. As the three hunkered down looking at the sand, I would have had a nuclear mushroom cloud appear on the horizon. A good movie, watch it with some of your more open-minded friends, with a good bottle of wine - and see what sort of sociological improvements YOU come up with!
My Dog Skip (2000)
Sickenly Sweet
If you like sickenly sweet, polyanna, predictable American made movies, you'll love this flick. The only thing I like about this movie was the toilet progression scenes. I rated it a 3 - saved from a 1 by the great performance of the dog.
Trees Lounge (1996)
This could be YOUR life
One of the best movies I've seen. Buscemi has an incredible talent for depicting true life - a task not as easy as it sounds. This could've been my life. This could be YOUR life! Join the Army - but see this movie first.
The Butcher Boy (1997)
Brilliantly Crafted Analogy
This movie is a wonderfully produced black comedy. But that is only the surface level! Look below and you will find a brilliantly crafted analogy of America's growing psychosis over Communism. Consider the changing alliances, the Cuban missile crisis, the reference to pigs, and JFK - just to name a few. Young Francie MUST destroy the threatening Mrs. Nugent. A most righteous endeavor if ever the world has had one!
