The Vow (2020)
The Vow - 9 part series
As they explain in Esquire "It's a 9-part true-crime deep dive on the origin and downfall of NXIVM, the cult founded by Keith Raniere, who served as the group's spiritual guru and leader." Being that it's a true story, and not fiction, I find it fascinating to understand how people are swept up in a cult. How they entice people in by playing on certain emotions and then these people, sadly, are stuck in a situation that is not always easy to escape. Reminds me of Jeffrey Epstein luring in vulnerable, young girls, with what seemed to them like an innocent job opportunity, and with some of them he waits to get them on his private island and then rapes them repeatedly. How do they escape from the island? They're at his mercy. It's always obvious to those who can recognize what's going on from the outside, but from the inside, it's hard for them to see the truth, or understand how they're being manipulated, and find their way out.

I so love this movie. When they started showing the trailer for the 2019 remake of this I was really looking forward to it, but it was a total disappointment. If anything, it showed me how on point this version is. All the characters really match the age they should be and make the story come to life. In the newer version all the characters are mismatched in age and how they evolve and demonstrate who they are that it just makes me realize how much more amazing this version is. If I could give it more stars I would, but they limit me to 10. I know I love a movie when I rewatch it many times, and I have watched this more times that I can remember. In watching the 2019 version I just kept noticing the things that were off point through the whole movie. It was a struggle to get through it. In this version I just fall happily in to the story.

I was so anticipating and looking forward to this new version and was so disappointed. The characters are off. Amy is too "old" for some of her behavior. When she's outside crying about the limes it seems so false and doesn't match her age... same thing with burning the manuscript. Their mother only talks about forgiveness but doesn't address Amy's behavior of vindictiveness, (and she had no reason to be mad -- she was having a tantrum because she couldn't get her way) and this would be more understandable for someone who's much younger. With her being older that changes the situation and she should have consequences for her behavior. Friedrich is too young. I realize that remakes try to be different but the ages are off. One minutes Amy tries to pass off her behavior as if she's too young to know better, and the next minute she's acting as an adult. I totally love Saoirse Ronan, but she didn't seem like a Jo to me. When Laurie proposes and falls apart he just seems co-dependent, and no sense of self-worth. Many talented people, but seems so mis-matched. So disappointed. The 1994 version is extremely more enjoyable.
