Station Eleven (2021)
Truly Special
I binged the first three episodes and then really took my time to catch up and watch the rest. This story was heartfelt and pure. The experience I found to be as a father and son- especially poignant.
It's a story lost and found, grief and hope.
I wish this show came out before I lost my mom because I'm a better person having watched it.
Independent Lens: Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (2005)
Very Poor
Only a documentary done this poorly could make Andy Fastow a victim. Anyone ever heard of Michael Kopper? Well, he is a key figure in the accounting and hedge fund scandal. Is he even mentioned? Nope.
Jeff McMahon, Ray Bowen, Vince Kaminski and Kevin Kindall are some of the people that stood up to Fastow and Kopper as they were fleecing the company and manipulating balance sheets. Were they mentioned? Nope.
Instead what this documentary did was go for the cheap and easy answer of Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling without peering into the deeper problems that plagued Enron for years. Because of that they missed an opportunity to talk to the people that tried to save the company and the hubris that ultimately destroyed it.
Xanadu (1980)
I am THE ONLY PERSON who liked this movie
Everyone needs a guilty pleasure? Well, Xanadu is mine. One could go on and on about what is wrong with this movie: from Michael Beck's acting, to that entire fashion sequence with ELO playing the background, to the animation scene (with ELO playing in the background) to Gene Kelley on rollerskates. Despite all of this though, and I can't explain why, I like this movie.
Almost Famous (2000)
Unique and Memorable
One of the finest examples of filmmaking. This isn't a movie, it is a film. There are moments that will break your heart and mend it at the same time. The characters are not formulaic but three dimensional people who were written and directed with tenderness and familiarity.
It is no suprise that this is auto-biographical, but Crowe's experiences transcend his own life and are found in many if not all of us.
This is a film that will stay with you and the world seems a little different when you walk out of the theater.
