The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
TTT receives the highest average critics' rating of any wide release movie this year.
If you have any doubt as to the greatness and critical acclaim this movie is receiving, then take a look at this site. If you just click on any movie, and then look at the left side, you will see all the years movies, with wide release movies on top, and limited release movies on the bottom. TTT had a average score of 90. The only movie that scored higher was Lion King. But if you click on it, you will see it has a pathetic 3 reviews (it was probably shown on IMAX or something) Anyways, is Lion King anywhere near the best movies of this or any year? Of course not. Hey, I like animated movies too, but Lion King? Come on, gimme a break.
It is quite surprising that no other movie even scored in the eighties. In fact, the next highest rated movies were 8 Mile with Eminem and Punch Drunk Love (have no clue who's in the movie), both with 78. Catch Me If You Can scored 75. Lilo and Stitch scored 76. Solaris and the much ballyhooed Gangs of New York both only scored 70. Those are the ONLY movies in the 70s.
TTT is not just the best movie of the year. It was the best movie BY FAR. I think the stupidity of those who have a low opinion of this epic masterpiece is made even more evident now.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Simply amazing!!!!!!
I've been waiting for this movie a long time now. After seeing the trailers and commercials, I just HAD to see this movie. After seeing it, it's all I can think about. I'm thinking about the battle scenes, the breathtaking scenerey, the story, but most of all, the characters. The characterization was so good that they were almost actual people you cared about. For those 3 hours, I wasn't watching a movie - I was transported to Middle Earth and actually witnessed this breathtaking drama right before my very eyes!!! Was the movie perfect? Of course not. No movie is. There is always something that could have been done better in one's opinion. Notwithstanding, LOTR has come as close to perfection has I have ever seen. I am amazed at how this Peter Jackson has come out of nowhere to create perhaps the greatest movie spectacle of all time (I am referring to the trilogy as a whole). I didn't think it could be done. How could a Hollywood outsider have the skill, genius, and infrastructure to create what Hollywood only aspires to be? The wait for Two Towers is going to be agonizing. I guess I'll just have to watch FOTR again and again. Actually, I'll be going back tomorrow with my brother. Boy, is he going to be in for a run ride.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
A comment
Here's my two cents concerning Attack of the Clones, George Lucas, and Star Wars. I think what we have here is a movie that is technically superb, but with a weak script. George Lucas is one of the greatest visionaries Hollywood has ever seen. Without him, movies would still be in the stone ages. However, that does not mean he could tell a good story. If he only stuck to what he's good at, and left the script to someone else, he would still be a god right now. What a shame.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Lucas is going down ...
This was a really, really bad movie. I cannot believe that after 16 years of waiting, this is what George Lucas gave us. From seeing the trailer, The Attack of the Clones does not look much better. I am one of those people who used to worship George Lucas and think that he was some kind of genius. He certainly does have talent, but after this???? I mean seriously, there are DOZENS of scriptwriters in Hollywood who could have come up with a better story than Phantom Menace. I guess none of his friends wanted to tell him how bad it actually was.
I just don't understand how someone who supposedly had sooo much talent could have made something so infantile. I mean come on. This was a movie for kids under the age of 10.
Here's the funny thing. If George Lucas just walked away after the original trilogy, and didn't add any more episodes, he would to this day, still be considered a GOD. Unfortunately, what Phantom Menace has done is irreparable harm to the whole damn franchise.
Now, I see the original series in a different light. No longer do I watch it with a sense of awe. Take for example Return of the Jedi. I used to love this movie. Now, I see how similar it is to the Phantom Menace. And let's remember that Empire Strikes Back, which is the favorite episode of many, wasn't even directed by Lucas.
Even as bad as Phantom Menace is, Lucas will still have his hordes of rabid fans. That was true until something called Lord of the Rings came along. Now, Lucas does not only have competition for the hearts and minds of fantasy fans, but is now up against movies that are far superior to his own. If Episode II is another Phantom Menace, then we could see the final nail in the coffin with the release of LOTR's next installment.

The Mummy Returns (2001)
Wow, that was bad.
I saw this movie at the discount theaters at the urging of my friend a while back. I thought, it's only a couple bucks. What the hell? The problem is that I lost 2 hours of my life that I could not otherwise get back. But worse, I have now been emotionally scarred from seeing such a ridiculously bad movie.
Let's see where do I begin? The characters, the fighting, the meaningless special effects, the utterly substanceless story. But the worst had to be the STUPID jokes all throughout the movie.
I would have walked out of there if my friend had another ride home.
I'm sorry, but I just could not enjoy this movie. But what shocks me is the amount of people who actually enjoyed this thing. Were we seeing the same movie?

The Matrix (1999)
Truly Awesome...
I too cannot believe all of the negative reviews I've been reading on this film. People, this is SCI-FI, not a documentary on the mating habits of giraffes in sub-Saharan African. I mean, for crying out loud, can you not suspend your high-mind, self-righteous cynicism for 2 hours and just enjoy a good movie when you see one? I mean geeeeeeeeeeeez.
What the hell is this about plausibility? Plausibilty? Come on! Like Terminator 2 is plausible? Or how about Star Wars, where they all these planets with the exact gravitational force and atmospheric environment of the earth? If plausibility were ever a measure by which to enjoy a movie, damn near all movies would fall by the wayside.
This was one helluva movie. Everything, from the breathtaking fight scenes, special effects, to the storyline was simply awesome. It was one of those groundbreaking movies that we'll still be watching in 20 years.
Here's hoping the sequels are not another Phantom Fiasco.
LONG LIVE THE MATRIX!!!!!!!!!!
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (1999)
Who cares?
This show was so cool when it first started, and it looks like it will continue to be a phenomenon unparalleled in television history. But why??? Isn't this show getting a little tired? In a year the ratings are gonna be half what they are now. That is if the show is still on the air.
Independence Day (1996)
God help us
This was one of the stupidest movies I have ever seen. It is unfathomable how it it made the money it did. I mean, are people that gullible, and willing to gobble up whatever crap Hollywood throws at them? Apparently so. That laughable ending with the giant spaceships being destroyed with ridiculous ease was an offense to anyone with half a brain. It actually makes the ending to Phantom Menace seem entertaining and well-written by comparison. Believe me, that is hard to do.
Even if you have the ability to check your brains at the door, I do not comprehend how you could like this pathetic excuse for a movie.
BUT, if you like to have your intelligence insulted with laughable plot lines, witness shamelessly blatant American jingoism, don't mind spending a couple hard earned dollars, and have absolutely nothing to do for a couple hours, please see Independence Day.
