Land of the Lost (2009)
Saturday Morning Fun
It seems that most people who didn't like this movie missed the whole point. It's a take-off on a Seventies Saturday morning TV show, and they captured the fun and the weirdness of that show perfectly. The "Land of the Lost" itself is imaginatively realized, the visuals are excellent and the humor is exactly the sort to be expected. If you can accept the movie for what it is, you're certain to have a good time. And if you're a fan (like me) of the original, you'll probably enjoy it even more, especially the way in which various oddities from the series were woven into a single story.
Personally, I'd like to see a sequel!
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Ugh.
I'm a huge fan of the original "Star Wars" trilogy, but no matter how much I try, I cannot enjoy "Phantom Menace". Sure, sure, the special effects are great, but they're let down by an uninteresting story and truly awkward dialogue.
Also, Jar Jar is not the only offensively racist character in the film. The green Trade Federation aliens are the worst kind of Fu-Manchu/Yellow Menace stereotypes ("Ah, so! Qreen Amidara!!") and Watto the Sicilian nearly says "What's a matta for you?" a couple of times.
There are a lot of little annoyances... Jar Jar jumps around like Bugs Bunny (the diving scene is really embarrassing), you can't really see what the spaceships look like in the final space battle, Amidala over-enunciates... and why is it that the aliens introduced at the beginning of the pod race never seem to appear in the race itself?
Worst of all, though, is that the Jedi are not really the heroes one would hope for. They lie, cheat, try to use Jedi mind tricks to get their way and have little or no compassion for other "pathetic life forms". What is it that makes them the good guys? Is it because they're good looking? That doesn't sit well with me.
Sure hope Episode II is better.
Star Wars (1977)
My two cents.
I'm only leaving a comment because I was surprised to read so much negative feedback about this movie. Come on... Star Wars is one of the single greatest motion pictures ever created. Ever.
If you don't like Star Wars, you probably don't like movies.
The People That Time Forgot (1977)
Fantastic!
All due respect to Raquel Welch, but Dana Gillespie is the single hottest cave girl to ever to grace the silver screen! You don't believe me? Check this film out. It's a great movie... fun, fast paced story, super soundtrack and beautiful location scenery. I guess it never really got the attention it deserves because of it's puppet dinosaurs, which don't hold a candle to stop-motion or CGI. But watching Dana more than makes up for that!
"Soon your bodies will feel the warmth of Nagarumata's love, and your heads will help build new temple in His honor!"
Earthquake (1974)
I love this movie!
I love this movie!! There is something wonderfully cathartic about watching an entire city be destroyed by nature (while knowing it's only a movie). And the film-makers were very thorough... offices, highways, universities, police stations... you name it, it gets flattened. And the film is appropriately somber (not like the silly "up-beat" disaster films they make nowadays). Forget "Armageddon" and "Volcano"... this is a REAL disaster flick!
All that and a very young Victoria Principal!
The Benny Hill Show (1969)
Benny is the King!
Benny is the King! I love this show! I love the facial expressions! I love the innuendo! I love the songs! I love the chases! I love Louise English and Sue Upton!
"The pleasures of drink last but a moment, Cigarettes make you sick, you could die; But the love of a beautiful woman, oh! That's the best thing that money can buy!" -Benny Hill
Mysterious Island (1961)
Excellent!
My favorite Harryhausen film, and for that matter, one of my favorite movies ever. Even when the excellent stop-motion monsters aren't on screen, the film is fun to watch and well-paced. And when they ARE on screen... whoa! The giant bird is the best. And the Herrmann score is absolutely one of the finest adventure movie soundtracks ever written.
"Contact with my own species has always disappointed me. Solitude gives me a freedom of mind and an independence of action." -Captain Nemo
The Son of Kong (1933)
Wonderful!
This is a fantastic movie! Don't let the pessimists put you off because it's not as great as "King Kong" (what movie is??)... this is one of the better dinosaur/adventure movies out there. The special effects (especially some of the Kong's Island landscapes) are actually smoother and more impressive than it's predecessor. And if you love "King Kong", this movie makes a wonderful epilogue to that film.
And, oh yes, I have a terrific crush on Helen Mack.
(For fellow Helen Mack fans, I recommend "She" (1935), also by Cooper.)
