The Closet (2001)
8/10
witty and funny
10 July 2001
i had no idea what to expect from this film when my friend dragged me to see it, saying that it had been a huge success in france when she was living there. it started out well enough but i thought it was just going to be about how "funny" it is that this guy who isnt gay pretends he is....

however, the film is self- referential enough that it turns on itself and makes fun of all the prejudices and hangups that we all carry around with us. it is a funny, unpretentious film and for that, well worth seeing. the main actor is excellent.

Calle 54 (2000)
A treat
29 May 2001
Calle 54 is a small gem for music lovers. Well structured and easy to follow, it allows the viewer to get lost in the beautiful and evocative sounds of Latin Jazz. Special and rare appearances by the greats of the genre make the film even more unique.

Sergi Lopez is the heart of this film
30 April 2001
I think this is a good film, taken to perfection by an amazing performance by Sergi Lopez in the title role.

I knew next to nothing about the film when i went to see it and I have to say that from the moment he comes on screen there is something incredibly unsettling and at the same time, likeable about him. He plays the two sides very well throughout the whole thing which is what is called for.

I'm glad i got to see this and "discovered" a new actor.

The Yards (2000)
Just a few words of praise...
23 October 2000
this is the first James Gray film I've seen. i know nothing about him or his previous movies & i was very impressed with The Yards. the acting was generally very good - except for the token good-looking girl- and the story moved well and was interesting. I think that the film raises important questions of loyalty and friendship, as well as family ties being a negative thing.

Mark Walhberg is truly exceptional in this. I loved the fight scenes, they were so true and violent.....

can't wait for re-release!
15 September 2000
I think this is coming out again in October 2000, I guess the soundtrack will be remastered - maybe new subtitles? or dubbing? I don't know but I can't wait to see it on the big screen as I missed it the first time around and have only been able see it on video surrounded by a cloud of smoke at 3am in a basement.
