Alien: Covenant (2017)
Suspend disbelief and enjoy the immense atmosphere
This, after the OG Alien is my favorite in the series. I liked it much better than Prometheus.
The sets, visual effects, atmosphere and pacing are top notch, but above all else, this movie is carried by the amazing Michael Fassbender. His character is truly haunting and I find myself wishing for him to show humanity each and every time.
For some reason it doesn't bother me that the crew makes dumb decisions. The suspense and horror are outstanding. There is such a dreadful, depressing, hopelessness in this movie that is second to none.
Survives repeated viewings easily. Suspend disbelief and strap in.
Don't Look Up (2021)
A rushed mess with an identity crisis
Big budget, big names, not sure if wacky satire or serious existential drama. Still entertaining enough to watch until the end.
A rushed mess with an identity crisis.
[Rec] (2007)
I have never been this scared by a film.
It has been years since I've seen this, but just thinking back makes me feel uneasy. Frankly I'm not sure if I will ever watch it a 2nd time. There are no words. Be warned.
Lost in Space: Impact (2018)
''HOLD DOWN THE FORT''
For one of the characters to use an expression like this, is a painful reminder that dialogue can still be written without being proofread by someone who thoroughly understands English.
Furthermore, when kids and teens speak like experienced adults, what more do you need to lose any sense of immersion?
The importance of good, accurate dialogue has once again been placed at the lower end on the priorities list. Can't expect much after such a lazy start, besides fancy sets and effects.
Hostel (2005)
Glorification of sadism, torture and violence overall.
I am able to enjoy violent and even gory movies as much as the next guy, but this was the only movie that absolutely repulsed me deeply. It seems to be nothing but a portrayal of some of the fantasies that severely psychotic people may have on the topic of sheer destruction of life. This being a movie and not a documentary it must imagine itself to have entertainment value and while it can be interesting to have a viewer imagine how truly terrible and horrifying it would be to find yourself hunted by sadistic torturing psychopaths, this movie also seems to aim to present the whole thing in such a detached, clinical way that is truly disturbing.
