Auto Focus (2002)
Great Film
Grew up watching reruns of "Hogan's Heroes" with my family, and always enjoyed Bob Crane. Very talented and underrated man, in many ways. Unfortunately, sometimes a descent is concomitant with a rise. This film does a good job presenting Crane's descent into the underground sex scene of the '60s and '70s, which may have led to his untimely and still officially unsolved murder in Scottsdale, AZ. The details have been disputed by many, but the broad strokes are all present. A tragic end to a wonderful entertainer. Great job by Greg Kinnear as Crane, with a fine supporting cast, fitting soundtrack, and some memorable dialogue.
Demented (1980)
Truly Underrated Genre Film
Have always enjoyed this film - even though it may well have its flaws. Has there ever been an actress that exuded the raw sex appeal (with the possible exception of Dyanne Thorne) of Sallee Elyse? Unbelievable lady, just fantastic. A shame she only appeared in one other film. Not nearly as well-known as "I Spit on Your Grave", but a definite equal, in my opinion. Most hate this movie but I've spent many years trying to find it for sale. The few that are out there are in horrible condition or bootlegs. Was fortunate enough to locate a copy on eBay recently, although still not a factory original. Anyone else out there enjoy it as well?
A Glimpse of Hell (2001)
Short Commentary
I was on active duty in the US Navy at the time of the tragedy aboard USS Iowa, and can clearly recall the controversy surrounding the incident. Many unanswered questions remain to this day, but this film does a fine job of presenting the story. Outstanding performance by James Caan as CAPT Moosally. The scenes showing the firing sequences of the big guns are alone well worth the purchase price of the movie. There has never been, nor will there ever be a single piece of military armament as awe-inspiring and fear-inducing as the mighty 16-inch/50 caliber gun. The saddest day in naval history was the final decommissioning of the Iowa Class battleships. One small error to point out: during the opening few minutes of the film, a battleship is seen underway(at sea). The hull number of the ship is "63", which was the number of the USS Missouri - the "Mighty Mo" - not the Iowa.
Nightmare (1981)
George Tatum
Although panned by many, " Nightmare " remains a truly unnerving and horrifying film. Enter " George Tatum "- the personification and textbook example of unrelenting deviance. A more disturbing low-budget genre film would be difficult to find. Most assuredly not for the faint of heart or stomach. The " hammer " scenes are particularly stomach-churning. A great job by Savini on effects.
