guns
2 February 2004
This movie depicts a revolver with a silencer on it. Revolvers cannot be silenced in this manner. The mechanism is too loose - the sound would escape before it passed through the silencer. This is a very common screw-up in films.

No script
6 April 2003
If it's true that this movie was made-up as they went along, without a script on-hand, then that is an excellent argument for writing a screenplay first. This movie is not entirely devoid of worthwhile moments, and the cast is quite appealing. However, the quirkiness of the story eventually feels forced, and I lost interest in the movie well before it was over.

Urban details
27 February 2003
When films are set in Chicago, the filmakers often try to give the city a gritty, urban feel, by dressing the set with such things as graffitti and litter. Another favorite is the street corner hot dog stand. ( See WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING.} Although hot dogs were invented in Chicago, and a Chicago-style dog is a singular taste treat, you cannot buy them from a sidewalk vendor, as depicted in the pushcart outside of the travel agency in MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING. Chicago's food sanitation regulations prohibit food from being handled by people who do not have handwashing facilities.

Lying in Wait (2001)
erotic striptease
23 August 2002
In this movie, Vera (Virginia Madsen) does a drunken, beachfront striptease, although her character quickly sobers up and realizes the inappropriateness of her actions. The abortive dance, with no overt nudity ,was one of the most erotic scenes in my recent cinema experience.

Obviously, eroticism is in the eye of the beholder, but if you find Virginia Madsen as attractive as I do, you'll want to track this film down.

The Ia Drang Campaign
1 March 2002
The combat scenes in this movie take place in the Ia Drang valley in the Republic of Vietnam. However, they were filmed at Fort Hunter-Liggett in California, which is a coastal desert. Therefore, it just doesn't look like Vietnam. I understand that the central highlands of Vietnam were heavily forested, but I would be astonished if you would find oak trees there!

Girls in Prison (1994 TV Movie)
Made for TV
4 February 2002
Don't let the appellation MADE FOR TV throw you off the scent. This movie was made for cable TV, and like any good 'girls in prison' movie, it has 2 really good shower scenes!

Also, as it is set in the 1950's, Anne Heche gets to wear some clothes that would look right at home on Grace Kelly.

Well respected actress in an early screen appearance.
18 October 2000
Helen Mirren was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company when she travelled to Australia to appear in this film. Alongside veteran actor James Mason, she cavorts on the sunny beaches of tropical Queensland. This is a somewhat off-beat movie, but it has some very sensuous scenes of MS Mirren (Cora) posing as an artist's model, au natural.
