The Life of David Gale (2003)
Kevin Spacey does it again!
Once again Kevin Spacey has picked a great film to star in, how does he do it? This film is more than him though, he's fully supported by actors who put in sterling performances to bring David Gale's story to life. Some of the twists in the plot are slightly predictable, but then again, I do say that in hindsight! A cleverly put together film, with Kate Winslet in a good role. Well worth your time.
Murder by Numbers (2002)
Crime movie by numbers
Not bad but could be loads better, also seems to follow a staple diet for crime drama. You've got Sandra Bullock as the cop who finds it difficult to work with others, you've got her placed with a new partner. There's a closed case but a cop who works on it anyway, and there's so many corney lines in the film it makes you want to scream.
However, if you can look past the formulaic elements there is a good film hiding underneath. It's gripping and the subplots worked for me. Well worth a rent but maybe not a purchase.
Shot in the Heart (2001)
Low budget, great film!
Wow, I loved this film. It may not have had the funding and advertising that the latest hollywood blockbusters get but it packs twice the emotional punch. The tale revolves around this one family from Utah and it's the connections between the people in the family that provide the film with its punch. The main lead (Giovanni Ribisi) plays his part very well, at no time does he leave you to believe that he's acting all his feelings. It's his brother (Elias Koteas) who stole the show for me though. When the two were in scenes together they bounded their lines off of each other, giving fantastic performances. Great cast, great film.
