Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Please Give me my time back!
Let me just say that I have seen literally thousands upon thousands of movies and have voted for each on here, and this was the first movie I have ever given a 1. If that does not sum up my opinion of this movie, let me elaborate. This movie contains absolutely no plot, relies on the audiences' stupidity to pull its humor from, and was very poorly made.
As best I could follow, the movie follows a "guy" named Napoleon Dynamite through high school. To say that he is a nerd is an understatement, and he befriends a new Mexican student named Pedro. He is picked on by others, and his family life is a wreck. That basically sums up the plot, and to say any more would give the writers more credit than they deserve.
I love a good comedy and even laughed a few times through such idiotic movies as "Dude, Where's My Car?", but never once even chuckled at this movie. This could be because I have an IQ over 20, or it could just be that there was no humor to be found. I assume it is the former since my brother found this movie funny, but I can't be sure since he has never been tested.
I am no movie student, but have taken a few classes in film appreciation, although I don't think that was needed to notice the flaws in the movie making. Camera use was poor, lighting was off at times, and the acting was sub-par. I have seen movies where more serious flaws were overcome by excellent acting, but as previously mentioned that was lacking here.
Take those few dollars you spent and put it towards anything else, it will be money better spent! In summation, I hope you heed my advice and avoid this movie like the plague.
One Hour Photo (2002)
Excellent psychological thriller
One Hour Photo highlights Robin Williams in what is certainly one of the most demanding and chilling roles of his career, and he delivers on every level. Williams plays Seymour, a lonley film developer at a convenience store one hour photo center, who develops a truly unique relationship with some of his customers. In an effort to escape the void in his life, Seymour "adopts" these individuals and engrosses himself in their life through the pictures they bring in. Williams does an outstanding job in this role by playing a character that you can certainly sympathize with to a point, but whose obsession takes him to edges of sanity and beyond.
This is the first film I have seen by director Mark Romanek, however he creates the perfect atmosphere through the eerie lighting in Seymour's home, and the occasional peek into his demented thoughts. Needless to say I will certainly be looking forward to Romanek's next film. To avoid giving away too much of the film, I will not disclose any details about the climax, or the surprise ending; however I tell you that this movie will not leave you disappointed
Air Force One (1997)
Great movie for those who need a little patriotism (or just some good action)
I don't know where to start with this movie, so I guess I will begin with the director. Wolfgang Petersen has a long history of making great movies that are largely ignored by the majority of viewers (i.e.- Das Boot, In the line of fire), and this movie is the one that started to break that mold. By casting an actor of such caliber as Harrison Ford (sorry Clint), Mr. Petersen finally got a star with enough drawing power to pull people in on his name alone. That fact, along with a storyline that tugs at the very core of a nation, was able to pull people in to finally see what a great director can do with a good story and some solid acting.
Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)
Waste of Time
For those of you out there that enjoy comedy, this movie is not for you. What can I say other than that I want my money back? This movie was incredibly stupid, and not the least bit funny (remember the tattoo scene in the trailer? even that got old after the first minute, and was certainly did not need to be repeated). I enjoy a good movie as much as the next guy (i.e. - Cheech & Chong), but this movie was just stupid. For anyone wanting to see a good comedy this winter go see any other comedy before this one.
