Nell Gwyn (1926)
Dorothy was a great one, too...
It seems that Dorothy Gish is easily forgotten, which is a shame due to the screen presence she held. Lillian was the 'dramatic' one, and her works today are far more plentiful when one goes to find their works on VHS or even DVD. Dorothy, the more 'comedic' one, was very popular in her day, as well.
I had the pleasure of seeing a wonderful print of NELL GWYNNE at a Gish film festival. In it, Dorothy plays the lead role, which she brings a good deal of zest and spirit. In it, she plays a young, poor street vendor who meets the King of England and wins his heart. He fulfills her dreams to become an actress, and the movie relates how she survives being an impoverished girl thrown into 'society'. Dorothy has some scenes that are delightful, and still to this day laugh out loud funny.
Hopefully, more of Dorothy's works will be available to the mass market and we will not have to rely on the very rare silent film showing to be able to appreciate her work to early cinema.
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
Was actually.... not bad!
I really haven't been wowed by most of the actual STAR TREK movies, mainly because the franchise, IMO, works best as an ongoing weekly serial of sorts. With YEARS between movies, you are left with only so much time to spend on these characters who had, previously, been so well defined in their personas.
With that said, I feel that this is easily the best NEXT GENERATION movie, and perhaps the second or third best in the series (like many others, WRATH, I agree, was the best). The movie had a lot of dialogue, which many thought too be 'too much', but for me it worked... after all, this series THRIVED on this type of thing, the verbal interplay and interaction.
I'm glad that most of TNG cast got at least one 'defining' moment (okay, well Geordi, Crusher, and Worf had smaller roles, but at least they fared better here than in previous outings). It should come as no shock that Patrick Stewart was wonderful in this movie, and seeing all these familiar faces was nice, especially given the time between this movie and INSURRECTION.
The special effects were great. I had heard that they were not that good, so I didn't expect much. Yet, the space sequences were wonderfully implemented, as most of the other effects added to the movie. The opening scene on Romulus was particularly effective.
I guess I have only three complaints, and they are fairly small. The first was that Worf's foam head can be seen getting squished when he puts his head down in the wedding sequence. Just a nitpick, I know. I didn't like how Troi was continulously crying... I wish she had more a look of determination or anger in her scenes during the final battle when she uses her telepathy instead of fear, terror and frustration. The third is that Picard's clone looks too much like a HELLRAISER Cenobite in his leather outfit. I think the dark effect could have been achieved without the 'look' Shinzon had.
I think and hope that I will see another outing of STAR TREK. This movie had me wanting more. Maybe, though, if there IS another movie they could add a few new faces to the ship, and not just as cannon fodder. The series should thrive on new things and ideas, as well as new characters, to move things along. Maybe Commander Donatra would like to join Starfleet? lol
Anyways, if you are a STAR TREK fan, I can't recommend this enough. It's a lot of fun! Even if you are just a general sci fi fan, there is enough here for you to enjoy this movie. I hope it does well at the box office to consider another entry into the series.
