Loverboy (2011)
not another love story
This is one of those Romanian movies that seem to address only a Romanian audience. People from abroad may perceive it as having an incomplete ending or even as being an unconventional love story. No, it is not a love story, at least from the main hero's perspective. It is rather a story about prostitution industry", explaining how young women get trapped into such a slavery and eventually they are killed (it happened to the first girl but I'm afraid it is quite difficult to make the right connections between her and prostitution). *** One may have the big image only at the end of the movie. Until then it looks like a boring collection of scenes not related to each other; nevertheless there is a good solid plot. As a weakness, the story is not quite convincing and it's hard to understand the reasons of the girl's behavior. Altogether, it's a good movie and I recommend it to all Romanians (and to foreigners as well).
Buna! Ce faci? (2010)
avoid it!
During the last 15 minutes of the movie I was just laughing. Not because of the comedy (there is no such thing in this film), but because how stupid it could be. Imagine you are watching a soccer game and the players are so bad they are not even able to touch the ball – this kind of laugh I'm talking about. This movie was nothing but a 105' piece of unintentional humor.
Poor idea, bad script, flat action, stupid dialogs, unnatural acting performances, very slow pace (inexcusable in this case, since there is nothing deep to understand or feel). I had a strong feeling of seeing again some 80s' Romanian movie, such as 'Liceenii', but unnecessary nudity or sex scenes dotted about.
But the worst thing was the story itself. It's end, I mean. This end turned one bad movie into a huge non-sense. You lose your time expecting to see how the main characters solve their relationship problem, and you get them solving nothing. You endured such a long flat movie for no reward.
Recommended only for people who are not searching for any deep message and/or interesting story, just wanting to watch two 50 years old persons getting in love and... nothing more. I guess the fans of 'The Young and the Restless' will really enjoy this movie.
PS. I totally agree with Alex Iordache in his review.
Holy Smoke (1999)
more than enjoyable
I'm not a fan of this genre (soft drama|comedy), I'd rather watch a psychological thriller, or a horror. But I really enjoyed this movie. 9 stars from me.
The plot is both interesting and intelligent. And very well fructified by the director. I liked very much that the entire movie focuses on what's happening in the main characters' minds and NOT on some exotic facts regarding India and its religious gurus.
The acting was not good, but excellent. Both PJ Waters (the macho American treater, played by Harvey Keitel) and Ruth (the Australian girl fascinated by an Indian guru, played by Kate Winslet) really convinced me that they are real people, not just fiction :). Kate Winslet is far from being a Miss Australia, but she is more attractive, in her femininity, than 20 Miss Univers.
Oh, I also liked the music. Generally, I don't like musical parts of a movie. But this time these moments fitted very well in the plot. Especially "I put a spell on you". They are not just entertainment, they are important elements in building the way you'll understand the action.
Brüno (2009)
I was about to vomit
God, I have to write at least ten lines in order to see my post published. but I wonder: should I spend more than one second of my life when talking about such trash?!
OK, I'll give it a try. do you think you're gonna laugh? oh... if you are about to laugh when just seeing a moving penis, go on, enjoy this "movie". but if you want a good comedy, something clever, you'd better watch your thumb - it's way funnier than watching this release.
absolutely pointless.
rude. cheap porn, even if not always graphically explicit. and pointless, pointless, pointless.
maybe a masterpiece for unbrainded people. but a huge offense for educated ones.
Transylvania (2006)
Outdated, tendentious and senseless
I live in Transylvania, so I was very interested in watching this movie. Now I'm sorry for wasting my time.
Very poor plot. A woman (Zingarina) comes to Romania looking for his former lover (Milan) but she finds another one (Tchangalo) to spend her life with. That's all. 5 minutes are more than sufficient for this story.
Anyway, there's no reason for Zingarina to join Tchangalo. She just does it. But actually nothing makes any sense in this movie.
No reason for anyone's behavior - unless Tony Gatlif (writer & director) wanted to offend the spectators' intellect.
No reason for so much music - unless T.G. wanted to accomplish a folk music compilation and inserted some playing between videos.
No reason for using so many languages (Romanian, Hungarian, Romales, Ukrainean, German, French, English and Italian), most of them spoken by the same people.
No reason for using a language or another in a particular situation: sometimes 2 persons talk to each other using everyone another language; Milan uses Romanian when talking to Zingarina, yet she doesn't understand Romanian; Zingarina is the only one using Italian; people use Romanian to Tchangalo, but this one uses only other languages; Tchangalo speaks French but he uses English when talking to Zingarina and so on.
Most of all, I see absolutely no reason for naming this movie "Transylvania". Only the music and the speech are specific to this land, but I don't think the title may be chosen according to them. It's like using the title "USA" for any movie with its story placed in USA.
Moreover, this movie is filled with a lot of unreal situations. For example, don't trust anything that happens in a restaurant or bar, you will never see that in real Transylvania. Don't trust anything about the church and the priest, especially the scene with the priest imprecating Tchangalo. Don't believe many other things.
The entire movie is nothing but a collection of stereotypes about Transylvania/Romania. This kind of movies used to be the focus of Romanian cinema about 15 years ago. I cannot understand how a French director could make such a movie in 2006.
And the playing is so unnatural that I suspect there was no casting.
