Trevor Noah: Where Was I (2023)
Fun and Smart as usual, But not Perfect
Trevor Noah makes use of his already well known abilities to deliver great performances, his accents are fantastic, he is likeable, relatable, and a pleasure to listen to.
As usual, his comedy is clean, his speech is perfect. Noah's trademark comedy which doesn't relly on over the top outrageousness and foul language is trully refreshing.
Lastly, IMDB declined my first review, I suppose freedom of speech isn't a thing when it comes to some sensitive topics, even though comedians joke about them constantly, and it's fine. All I'm saying is that one section of this special disappointed me and that's why it my rating is low this time.
Chris Rock: Selective Outrage (2023)
Down To A New Low, A Cringe Fest
I'm just saying because I can: I've hated this Netflix special. I almost died by a cringe overdose. Not only because the Will Smith theme, but the entire performance.
All the drama around the Oscars incident must have turned some switches on Chris Rock's head, because all I saw was a very hypocritical man screeching his bitterness and stroking his ego in compensation for whatever is happening to him. If anything at all, I feel sorry for him, I think he could have handled it better and still getting paid, I mean, with actual good jokes.
In my opinion, the fact that people are praising this performance is a low blow to comedy.
Lastly, I am censoring myself here, I will not get into which jokes were the worst (not about Will Smith) and why I've lost tons of respect for Chris. I just hope he recovers from this new low.
Tekken: Bloodline (2022)
May Trigger OCD to Artists
1st season review - Started watching the episode #1 and by the first half I already felt triggered by what many are calling "triangle shadows" (see next paragraph). By the third quarter of the same episode I also had to revert the language to Japanese because the English dubbing was not to my liking.
The "triangle shadows" isn't an accurate definition, I'll try to explain: artists apply techniques to create the illusion of volume and these consist on the studies of light and shadows. On this show, the Tekken characters' lines and the overall art is fantastic, except for the shading. The technique used for the shadow is known as cell-shading, but it's only half done. There should be 2 layers: one for shade and other for highlights, and that's where the problem is, because the highlight layer is non-existing. Instead, they seem to apply over the characters a very rough angular shape as a "mask", and overblow the top of the heads and top edges. This creates a couple of problems: first, this creates the illusion of a layer shadow over the previous cell-shading layer and if you're an artist you will understand that it's not right, second, no matter to where the characters are facing, there's the illusion that the side we see is always in the shade, too dark. Jin can be facing a fire but his face is apparently in deep shadow!!! Characters may be in front of lightning (Jin's powers) but they're in shadow, no light reaches them (not even a flashing couple of frames for effect), characters may be in a dark room facing the window, but the outside light doesn't affect them, they still seem to belit from behind or above by light sourcess that don't seem to exist.
I can not believe that this is a decision for style, it rather seems like a compromise. Either budget or deadline, I speculate, maybe because creating and animating the highlights' cell-shading layer would be too time consuming. A bummer, because this distracts me in a way that prevents me from enjoying what otherwise would have been a delight of a show. My brain is always signalling me that what I see doesn't make sense, and takes me off the story.
One positive note: the characters fight with their trademark arcade movements, and along with the great line work thats what made me endure until the end.
To the creators, if you make more seasons, please no more "triangular shades", I beg you!
Love, Death & Robots: Night of the Mini Dead (2022)
Great Concept and Clever execution
Having the world viewed as a miniature is a fresh idea, and I couldn't stop noticing how well made it was and wondering, trying to guess exactly what techniques were mixed in all scenes and how good it looks and how clever how the framing and focus were made. Definitely food for thought and research for those who are passionate for visual arts, either professionals or just fans of the culture.
The little story is perfectly articulated and executed.
This is so far my favourite episode of all first 3 seasons, and I am not even an hardcore fan of zombies. I would watch an entire season of "miniature episodes" if they're executed like this.
All in all, this is one of the ultra rare occasions when I must rate 10 out of 10!
The Highwaymen (2019)
Manos Arribas
This movie is a great entertainment for whoever needs a more old shcool type of film to have a break from the modern over the top trend. It's a story based on true events, the legendary coupke of criminals, this time told on the perspective of the Rangers who had to catch them. Very well told without the need to big CG shots or crazy special effects, everything is sober and it does have pretty and clean photography.
The acting is good to watch, a real pleasure when Kevin Costner and Wody Harrelson have their shiny moments as actors when the scene requires a bit of monologue to set their character's backstory.
About Woody Harrelson's character saying "Manos Arribas" 3 or 4 times, I think that the broken spanish was intentional as a means to portray the real Maney Gault, who apparently wouldn't exactly be a gifted person for languages. I thought that was a funny nice touch.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Could be Better
The visuals are really good for the most part, except for the character Gorr who didn't look at all like the noseless alien with fleshy appendages protruding from his head that fans of comics were familiar with. It comes as no surprise that so many fans of the source material and art buffs feel very disappointed and won't ever agree with the decision made by the producers. Gorr was good, but could have been so much better, and even though Christian Bale does a great job, it is also very cringey to watch him make the exagerated expressions.
The movie was good otherwise, the comedy excess is a style that could be better if there weren't so many unfunny jokes, but it still delivers a good time of entertainment. The whole story could have been better though.
DMZ (2022)
I take any excuse to see Rosario Dawson
The good:
The DMZ series looks good, and it's filled with really good people. I can't say no to watch Rosario Dawson, her performance is great as always and I loved the little kid named Odi.
The not so good:
I've never seen the comics, but I didn't like the show besides the actors and the visual production. The plot didn't do much for me and it felt off, and because it didn't make sense to me I got a feeling that there was something missing and failed to keep it interesting. For a kind of post-apocalyptical town everything looked too tidy and everyone so healthy. I did hear "cannibals zone" at some point, but nope, seen nowhere in the show. All tease, no fun.
Injustice (2021)
Not sure if the cup is half full or half empty.
But it sure is all half something, in my opinion...
- Art style looks very good sometimes, other times it feels too rushed.
- Story confused me at times, and I prefer the comics.
But here's another rant: what is ruining the DC universe to me is the Joker on film and animation, I am so tired of that character, can't stand it anymore. And Harley Quinn is going the same path, I find them both so annoying, I really, really hate them and now I avoid them both even on comics. It's just that I don't get the appeal for their annoying mentally sick personalities and how they make the plot so insanely stupid - just too over the top for my taste, I guess. Then again, the best thing about this title is the joker getting killed in the beginning, but that's only half of what really should have happened, because Quinn would be better off dead too.
Superman: Man of Tomorrow (2020)
Good character mix and Art style
The art style is really nice to look at, and the animation is good enough to entertain us through the plot.
The characters are well voiced with some smaller exceptions, and it was great to see Superman and Martian Manhunter together. Lobo was Lobo, the character always has his own charm. Lois Lane felt just a bit annoying at times but not a big deal. Lex Luthor was "redeemed" as the proper Lex, thankfully nothing like that awful Einsenberg's version in BvS movie. The monster enemy seemed a bit of a deja vu with the absorbing energy thing (BvS again) but it was well designed on all takes.
Overall this title was worth watching and left me craving for some more DC content. Might also mention that a future Superman live action movie could take some notes on just a few aspects of this video, one example being that the fans don't need another Superman origin story, but if you must include something for the plot, at least keeping it very short and simple like they did here.
Cheers.
The Underground Railroad (2021)
Slow and Boring
This has got to be the slowest and most boring series/film I've ever watched and it really was painful to stick with it until the end. But that's not all, some scenes seemed not only pointless but also somewhat out of place, and since it was all so slow it left us wondering why the hell were they wasting our time with them. We also wondered why there were some strange cuts in the story that left out what could have been more interesting to explore than all the slow filler fest.
It's hard to rate this because all the artistic work in visual production doesn't go unnoticed, I understand that the images were always so slow to let our eyes take in the pictures as if we were at an art gallery... Either that or they had contract for 10 episodes and only a script for maybe 3, so better produce a massive filler with the highest production value in artistry. I don't mean to be rude, but with all the "spare time" I frequently caught myself wondering.
Long story short: historically it's not accurate, but we had no beef about that, the story is good, just painfully slow.
My gf and I won't recommend this to anyone else besides people who appreciates nice pictures - here's 9 to10 hours worth of 19th century slave themed neat ones.
21 Bridges (2019)
Kept me pleasantly entertained
This movie has sort of an old school vibe, proving that cinema can be very entertaining withoud big fight scenes and cgi.
Some people will say the plot is predictable, but I don't think that it was supposed that the audience understood what was going on from the very beginning. This is a kind of narrative style that I do enjoy, because events happen straightforward making the audience understand what is at stake and whatch how the protagonist figures things out on his own. There's still a twist or two, but i don't think they were made to be a big surprise and certainly not for buildind suspense.
There were two or three things that felt like goofs. One was a certain apparently apple laptop in use that had windows OS, and other one a certain character that got shot in the chest but the shooter couldn't have the angle to make that shot because the scene had another character in front talking to him very close.
It's a very nice movie to spent time watching, that is certain for me.
