Discarnate (2018)
Disjointed, Forced Plot. Terrible Dialogue. Still Somewhat Interesting.
Everything that happens is forced and contrived.
Important lead up scenes don't exist.
The dialogue is very cringe inducing, similarly forced and unnatural like the plot.
Subpar acting by the lead.
The overall theme is fairly interesting.
Bad directing, bad writing, but interesting story idea, which is the only thing that kept me watching.
Uses all of the horror tropes in the worst ways possible.
In the end my reaction was "bleh". Was going to rate it 5 stars, but nothing really made it worth watching overall. Don't watch this film, just watch the trailer and let your imagination create a better story.
The Head Hunter (2018)
Looks great, but fairly hollow.
Most of what happens on screen is what you would expect to happen off screen, and vice versa. Unfortunately none of the moments which should be emotionally impactful carry any weight, and on several occasions there was no logical consistency. I tried to care about the film for the first 30 minutes, and then got extremely bored.
Nothing that happens is satisfying because there's no real reason to care about any of it. It all just sort of happens and feels very blah. Some things that happen don't even make sense, and that's not a reference to supernatural events. Just simple things like the main character getting his face clawed all to hell, underneath his helmet, which has the tiniest scratch mark on it, but the facial damage doesn't make any sense. Little details like that are the only thing you can even really pay attention to, because those are the only kind of things seen in the film.
Looks cool, but poorly directed, meh story.
A.I. Rising (2018)
Pleasantly Surprised
The image for the movie made me suspect it would be a cheap knock off of Ex Machina, and I have seen some pretty bad AI films. I have a special place in my heart for AI movies though, so I decided I would give this one a try.
As titled, I was pleasantly surprised. I know Stoya from her other work, and felt that she did a remarkable job in this movie creating a believable AI character that I was able to empathize with.
The male actor also did a fine job and all in all it was a rollercoaster of a film that left me really wanting to see every moment, being fully emotionally and intellectually invested. Granted, the intellectual bits were just background fluff, but that worked out well for the movie. It didn't distract from the root of the film.
