Brand New Cherry Flavor (2021)
7-9 Stars if it had an Ending
I like weird movies/TV shows but there has to still be a good plot, a purpose, and most definitely an ending. The first episode is 99% a normal everyday show until the very end, and from there it continues to be weird, and wonderful...Until the "end". I don't want to go into any detail about the specifics of the show because it's all for naught. This show literally doesn't have an end. Even if there was going to be another season, which I am pretty sure this is a single season limited series situation, there need to be at least some resolution of the story. This show makes no conclusions, answers no questions, and doesn't have a satisfactory outcome to anything that happened over the first 7 1/2 hours. I have without a doubt never been so let down by the ending of a movie/TV show in my entire life. The end made the rest of the show pointless and a waste of time. My best analogy of this show would be like watching The Sixth Sense for the first time and turning it off with 20 minutes left and never finishing it. ARRRRRGH such a waste of a what could have been a really good show.
Without Remorse (2021)
What in the Ever Loving !#%*
I have been waiting years for someone to make a Tom Clancy movie and when I saw the trailer for this and it was staring Michael B Jordan I couldn't be more exited. I gathered my whole family up and with great anticipation we started to watch. With in minutes it was clear this was not going to be the movie I thought it was going to be, and by the end the consensus was that we had just watched a pretty awful movie. There is almost no plot and what plot there is is the most contrite drivel you could imagine. This is a movie you have seen at least two dozen times and out of those 23 were a better movie that this. The acting is stiff, even from the usually fantastic Michael B Jordan, there is zero character development and you have no investment in how anything turns out. There is literally probably less than 10 minutes of action and what is there is unimaginative and boring. I love action movies and think that even a lot of lower budget poorly made ones at least have some worthwhile parts, but with this movie I can honestly say that there isn't one thing I could point to in this movie that had any entertainment value. Even taking out the high expectation I went into this with I can truly say this is one of the worst most disappointing movies I have ever seen.
Avengement (2019)
A Masterpiece of the Genre
Look, this isn't Citizen Kane, but for a straight to streaming action movie it is dang near perfect. The movie centers around Scott Adkins character who has been in prison for several years after doing a job for his crime boss brother. Without giving to much away at it's heart this is a revenge movie straight and simple, but easily one of the best I have seen. The action is great, the acting is very good not just for this type of movie but any movie, and the plot though fairly straight forward and simple is quite good. The movie has an amazing look, and atmosphere. I found the direction and editing to be superb (editing is so often subpar in movies like this). I found all the characters to be engaging, and even without any back story to them the characters all stood out on their own (not just a bunch of goons with no personality), and the bartender added a certain tension to the whole situation. The family dynamic of the movie goes beyond the typical, and a subplot with his mother adds an emotional weight to the movie without being overly dramatic or cheesy. Also let me just say this, if Scott Adkins was in his prime in the 90s he would have been up there with Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Van Damme, and Segal in action movie box office earnings. Honestly not every Scott Adkins movie is the best, but overall I find him to be engaging, his fighting skills to be amazing, and he is one of the last true action stars out there. I have enjoyed many of his movies but would 100% say this is his best in his acting, and the plot of the movie, the action, and the overall look and feel of the movie are the best he has been in. This movie is definitely not for everyone (the violence level is a 10), but if you like gritty hard hitting action movies take the time to watch this one. You won't be disappointed.
Half Nelson (2006)
Pointless
This movie was completely pointless. It had no moral, no climax, no resolution, no anything. It was well acted, and I found myself interested in what would happen to the characters, only nothing does. They are really no different then they are at the start. All the classroom scenes are the same, it's like he takes 5 classes to make a simple point. Opposites, and how they push against each other to create change, is the supposed metaphor for this picture, except there is no pushing tension, and as far as I can tell nothing changes. I take that back the only thing that changes is that the teacher is unable to effect the girls life in a profound enough manner as to prevent her from becoming a drug dealer, oh wait he DIDN'T change her life. I think this movie is somehow meant to disturb us, like it's so hard to come to grips with the idea that all drug addicts aren't all black, and from the ghetto and broken homes. This movie is suppose to open you eyes to the truth that middle class white people can end up on drugs. WOW I never knew that was possible. The teacher and the girl had a good dynamic, but again there is now real suspense or tension to their relationship, there are slight hints that maybe people think the relationship is wrong, but nothing comes of it or the relationship. Every time you think something is going to get serious and the climax will come, the plot manages to just keep going in this straight boring line. I was like OK, here go when he confronted the drug dealer about the girl, but then the drug dealer, who is clearly a nice guy, offers him a drink. Probably the worst thing to me about this movie is how it seems to have a very liberal view on drugs. There is only one scene where the drugs he takes seems to have a negative impact on his life, when he goes to the other teachers house and almost rapes her, other than that the worst that happens is he talks about brainy topics to the dumb sluts he picks up at the bar. Then after all the non-suspense the movie just ends out of nowhere, probably the worst end to a movie I have ever seen. I only give this movie 2 stars because like I said, I do think the acting was pretty good.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
This movie had huge societital influence.
Any younger person who did't grow up in the late 80's early 90's probably does't realize how this movie effected society as a whole. Whether you loved this movie, hated it, or never even saw it when it came out, there is no denying what it did, especially to advertising. There wasn't a commercial geared toward teens from 1989 till probably 1995 that didn't have a couple or morons talking like Bill & Ted. I can't think of another movie that had such an effect as Bill & Ted's did. Another example of how it became part of social thought, is how many movies or TV shows have you seen spoof the whole "San Demus High School Football rules!" quote have you seen, there are easily dozens. This movie rightfully gets a lot of praise for the fact that it had a moral, and actually taught kids some things about history, my hope is that history looks at this movie as it was; a movie that was goofy on purpose, showed great friendship between two people, taught us a little about history, and change the landscape of pop culture for almost 10 years (something I don't think many movies have done, especially any teen comedies).
Running Time (1997)
Gritty Realism
The film being shot in black and white, real time(I actually watched the clock and it all lines up), and in one shot gives this movie a realism, and grittiness that is really cool.
If not for the fact that the movie had some recognizable actors you might almost believe it was real.
Bruce Campbell is as cool as ever in the lead roll, and the supporting actors are really good.
I especially liked the relationship between Bruce Campbell and Anita Barone who plays his love interest. By the end of the movie I really found myself pulling for them to end up together.
I gave this movie 7/10 stars, if I could say anything negative about it, it would only be that the movie was pretty short at under 70 minutes.
