Dinner in America (2020)
Oddly...Satisfying
I tuned in for Kyle, who I have seen and liked in other things. The first half of this movie had me squirming, with the opening scene being particularly hard to watch; if you're squeamish you may want to avert your eyes. Also there is a LOT of profanity. It was hard for me to see all the ill-treatment that Patty endures in her daily life (what's in all those pill boxes anyway?) I thought, do I really need to see more of this? But by the halfway point I was thoroughly invested. The "dinner in America" scenes around the family table were a hoot-did anybody recognize their own childhood here? (Take it down a notch!) Throw Simon in the mix and the whole household is upended! But a touching tenderness develops when Patty and Simon discover their hidden relationship with each other. I feel like Patty could have ditched her meds after that: Simon is her new feel-good, and it's nice to see Patty shine like that.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Some Enjoyable Moments
I remember Captain Pike from Star Trek: TOS and although I'm a fan of Anson Mount, I don't feel he embodies Pike all that much. The casual, mostly discipline-free, damn-the-regulations attitude of Pike and the most of the crew doesn't seem to sit right. He treats his captaincy like a part-time job. (Why did the higher-ups decide to trust these mavericks with a starship anyway?) I do find the height of Pike's hair to be comically ridiculous! There must be an official ship stylist on board!
Young James T. Kirk appears as well. Physically, the actor doesn't resemble Kirk all that much, but using the mining drones to impersonate warships was right out of the Kirk playbook.
By far my favorite guest star is Carol Kane. Tongue in cheek and in on the caper from the start, she is the scene-stealer of season 2.
Take this remake as the sci-fi romp that it is and you won't be disappointed.
