Walker (2021)
There is something there
I am writing this after watching the first two episodes. Honestly, I went in thinking that it wasn't going to be that good and well, it isn't bad at all.
While, I think the focus on the family is a little over done, there is the potential for an interesting procedural cop show. I think once Cordell moves on even a little from his wife's death, the show will become far better with a little less family drama and more action.
There are some legitimate complaints like sound issues and weird pacing but these are fixable issues.
Right now, Cordell isn't the most likeable character but I think that may be the point. Micki is a wonderful and just want to see more off. I would happily watch a show about her.
The acting is also decent and I think overtime the actors will fall better into the characters. I also love the shooting locations.
So, there is lots of potential but I do feel there needs to be some changes. It seemingly is getting better overtime and I hope it stays that way.
Supernatural: Carry On (2020)
An Ending That Just Didn't Feel Right
Although, there were some good parts, there was a lot to be desired both with the plot and its execution. I also didn't like the idea that death was the only was for characters to find peace.
The X Files: Ghost in the Machine (1993)
Worth more than it looks
This episode is one of the more lower rated episode of the series and in many ways I can see why. The episodes seems to lack some of the fear and intensity of the previous episodes while the "bad guy" has a slight inconsequential feel. The episode also fails to build a strong emotional tie to the characters or to the overall story, even though certain events in the episode are meant to do so. While, the depiction of AI feels almost childlike and one dimensional. Asimov who?
Yet, I think it is also one of the more important episodes, especially in 2019. It very clearly shows the the destructive power of new technology and how governments are willing to do anything to get to that capability. While also highlighting the issue of responsible tech development, especially in the cyber field.
In a post-Snowden world where the discussions of AI, cybersecurity and mass surveillance are common place, this episode shows a very early conversation on these issues and perhaps it would have been more well received if it was released now than in early 90s.
Overall, this episodes value is not necessarily on what the story was actually able to show. Rather, it lies in the basic principles that make up the grounding of this episode.
Political Animals (2012)
Pretty good but needed more episodes
If you are looking for a quick political show to binge in a post-House of Cards world, Political Animals is honestly not a bad choice. The show mostly succeeds in combining the intrigue and melodrama of politics on the Hill with a relatively honest look at the intricacies of marriage and family.
Notably, Sigourney Weaver is able to fantastically channel an ambitious yet compassionate female lead, with a level of intellect and raw power that only she can really pull off. Importantly, the show cleverly dealt with issues such as the need for morally strong leadership, the hardships of women in power and homophobic attitudes which perhaps makes the show more relevant today, than it was in 2012.
Unfortunately, the show did suffer from some soap opera like plot lines that lacked any real dept or at worst made no sense in the context of plot. However, the shows worst sin was the simple fact that it never gave you a complete story and felt as if it ended right in the middle of a season. In particular, the last episode which is full of some insane "jump the shark" like moments fails dismally at stringing together some key plot points.
Nonetheless, it was worth the watch and it managed to satisfy my cravings for an entertaining political drama. I only wish there were more of it.
