Tyson's Run (2022)
Almost but not quite there
There is so much to like about this movie. I adore the cast and think they all do a great job of giving good performances. I love the idea of a son trying to earn his father's respect and the idea of a father trying to come to grips with his failures as a father and mother trying to be strong for both of them. There is a lot to like about this movie, but where it loses me is the ending.
Spoiler alert don't go any further if you don't want to know the ending.
It's not my movie so it's not fair for me to say what should've happened, but I will tell you what I wanted to happen. I wanted. Tyson to understand that crossing the finish line is a victory. Finishing a marathon is a victory. You don't have to be in first place you don't have to be top 10 in your age group the accomplishment itself of training and meeting a goal a victory that all of us need to remember to shoot for. By having the race and the way it does I feel like it cheapens the story ends with a Bible verse, which is good but I like this one a little bit better. Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us" (Heb. 12:1).
Holidate (2020)
Romance with just a touch of naughtiness
I am a big fan of Hallmark Christmas movies. I watch all the new ones and revisit old ones every year. This year I decided to branch out and watch a few of the other streaming services holiday offerings. I realize this movie is not new in 2022 but I have not seen it. This was wonderful. The opening scene with our female lead smoking and dropping an F bomb tells you that you are not in Hallmark Land anymore. The support cast was made up of all stars and it is great to see them have a chance to shine. The two leads are amazing and seem to be having a great time. The dialog was funny and as I said just the right amount of naughtiness.
A Castle for Christmas (2021)
A Christmas Romance
Brooke Shields is a cultural icon. Cary Elwes will always Wesley from the classic The Princess Bride. Who ever thought about putting them together in a Christmas movie was brilliant. The plot is not important what is important is the chemistry between our leads. The supporting cast is charming and the scenery is amazing. It is a joy to see a slightly older couple find love in a lovely Christmas tale. Will they work out their problems of course, will we end with a kiss and a happily ever after of course don't be an eejit! Pour a wee dram, cuddle up with someone you love and enjoy the romantic journey.
Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks (2022)
A good way to kick off the new Year
I love watching Doctor Who and when you have an episode on a Holiday, it feels even more special. This latest episode was a wonderful New Year's Day gift. This was a good story, told well, with one good and one great guest star. Aisling Bea as Sarah was a joy in her grumpiness. Who hasn't been stuck in a rut and in a dead end situation. I am not sure about the long term chances of Nick and her's friendship/romance but I do love that she is giving it a try.
A lot is being made about Yaz and Dan's discussion about Yaz's feelings for The Doctor. I don't think it is a big deal because to me since the return of the show, a companion often has feelings for The Doctor, I suppose since it is a female companion and a female Doctor, it is new ground but to me, it's a companion/Doctor crush which is fairly common. I don't blame Yaz, I'd have a crush on The Doctor as well. Dan continues to be a great companion and I love how he is getting along in the TARDIS
This is a good start to Jodie's final episodes as The Doctor. I will miss her but then I always feel that way when a Doctor is leaving. Two more specials left! I'm looking forward to the ride.
