Ghost Ship (2002)

Good Ghost Story on a Missing Ship
23 May 2023
This is a great film. I know a few people had issues with how the story played out, but for me, I enjoyed it a lot. At the start, you partially get to know the main characters as they're sitting having a few beers after a good salvage, and along come our mystery man with a deal that is so good it can't be true.

Wait, didn't I get told never to trust in way out things that make me loads of money for doing basic work?

Anyway, we get to the ship (not giving anything away as it's on a cruise liner and that is what the description says) and that is where everything notches up a gear.

The little girl that is there tells the story very well, and the start of the film and again when it's shown later on, really drew me in. The music was very good for the main scenes, as well as other parts of the film.

Sure, there are some bits you go 'Really? Yeah right' but overall, it's an enjoyable ghost story.

Fatal Attraction for the New Generation
6 May 2023
In the world of stalking by a woman, the majority of people instantly think of the film Fatal Attraction. That's understandable, but sometimes along comes a real gem that threatens to take away that mantle. And this is that film.

Without giving anything away, Swimfan is all about a guy in school that loves swimming. So much so, he's looking for a scholarship. Ben Cronin (played by Jesse Bradford) also has a girlfriend Amy Miller (played by Shiri Appleby), but is captivated by the new person at school Madison Bell (played by Erika Christensen). Starting off as just friends, you can see where it will end up, and then he realises his mistake and wants to just get on with his life, girlfriend, swimming and what not. But Madison isn't having any of that.

So begins a frantic bid by Ben to prove he's being stalked, whilst not trying to tell anyone, otherwise things will go even more pear shape.

Also, love the fact most use a pager in the film, and that they only use computers for email. If it was filmed now, it would all be via a phone, which is not as enjoyable I think.

Moral of the story: The grass isn't always greener on that other side of the fence.

Wrath of Man (2021)

Excellent movie
8 March 2023
A lot of people don't give this a good rating as it's not a typical Jason Stratham movie. There is no 'let's do some martial arts with a variety of objects, like oil and makeshift roller-skates'. Also, it didn't always centre on him, I would say it was 50/50 in the film, so we got used to other characters in the film, and their lives, as opposed to 'Jason only'. Overall, the film was great in the way it builds up to the climax; we all know the formula of revenge type films. Having said that, there is a twist in the film, that makes you realise some things, and it then takes on a new level. Overall, a great film.

Decent action film
19 February 2023
Robert Davi and Gale Hansen are both insurance investigators trying to find out the truth about the murder of their friend. I like the fact that there are some funny moments in how they catch people trying to de-fraud insurance companies, for a ton of money. They don't seem to go for that little old lady that tripped over a stone. There are some good scenes, shootouts etc. And a fight on a staircase that if you saw in films made just recently, would give a low rating, but for the 90's, this was the norm. I also loved the fact that when people fly through windows, its not the same as modern type films. Melody Anderson is also stars.

Excellent Hammer Horror
25 January 2023
This is a great film, right from the start we have the local villagers afraid of going to church due to the shadow of Dracula's castle touching the church. So, without giving anything away, though its in the trailer, two priests decide to go up there and stop this madness, once and for all....except they end up doing something that brings Dracula back. Way to go!!

We have Christopher Lee as Dracula, with those eyes of his. Michael Ripper as Max, a pastry chef and bar keeper, Rupert Davies as Monsignor and Veronica Carlson as Maria.

All great actors, all great roles, what's not to love. There are stakes, blood (hammer style, so very rich in colour), horse and carriage racing thru the forests, and a few deaths along the way.

Training Day (2001)
9/10
To protect the sheep, you gotta catch the wolf
6 January 2023
What a great film. Denzil Washington and Ethan Hawke play off each other so well in this film. Without giving it all away, it all centres on one day, Jake Hoyt's first day, played by Ethan. His training instructor to get him to become detective is Alonzo Harris, played by Denzil.

You can tell his day is gonna be a long one when he annoys Alonzo whilst he's trying to eat his breakfast, and read his paper. But that is a walk in the park compared to the rest that happens.

Basically, the whole day and night turns out to be a hellish ride into the dirty dealings of how Denzil is trying to survive, and also Ethan as well, when faced with many obstacles.

Collision Earth (2020 TV Movie)

Low Budget Disaster Movie
26 September 2022
So, this is a film about an asteroid shower that is hitting the earth. Yep, a typical disaster movie, but a bit of a lower budget. It starts off with (and not giving any spoilers here, its in the trailer) a rock hurtling past and landing on a house/barn type building.

No worries, as the local research group is on hand, just a mile away, which is lucky.

There are some notable things that just doesn't make sense. A drill that is a cross between a laser/diamond head, that has sparks flying everywhere....except the person using it is unphased, no eye protection.

We have Eric Roberts that can't stop with those Chinese Health Balls, rolling them in his palm like he's meditating or something.

And we have a general that has a voice like Bill Gates, but can't stop shouting, even when he picks up the phone, or talks to someone next to him.

That being said, it was a decent film. Special effects of the rocks hitting and cracking the ground was good, and I enjoyed it.

Is this the new Crowman?
24 January 2022
I liked this horror. It had quite a decent storyline, and a few actors I've never heard of. Notgiving anything away, the synopsis basically explains it all. But a couple of things are worth mentioning.

As usual, in any horror/action film where someone is being chased or running away, I was waiting for the old 'arrgghh, I've tripped and hurt my ankle' type thing. Was it there? Of course.

And here is another: If you're alone in a corn field, middle of the night and all your friends have dissapeared, and a random guy you've never seen before appears and said there is a madman on the loose and to go with him, and trust him, would you?

Anyway, great film to watch :)

The Protégé (2021)

Usual story, if there was even a story.
10 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What a waste of my time, can I have my 2hrs back? So, I watched it till the end but I was completly lost.

*Mild spoliers*

From what I gather, the main lead see's her family killed in front of her, but you actually don't see this until the end, so you start off only knowing that the family was killed as the Synopsis in Amazon told me. That being said, she gets taken under Samuels wing to be trained to kill etc.

Only you never see her being trained at all. Not even a 5 minute montage, at least Team America (watch it, it has puppets) has a montage.

So, for the next half of the film, we get a bit where some killing happens (not saying who), and then she goes looking for a kid or something. I say something, as it sounded like lucozade when they kept saying it, and I thought she was just looking for a drink to quench her thirst from those wonderful scripts she was reading. Turns out it was a kid called Lucas Hayes.

Nope, turns out it was a kid (man now), no idea why as she see's him, and then wanders off, leaving him alone. Maybe that is the part where you can pop the kettle on to make a cuppa, or maybe grab the vodka to get you though the second half.

At one point, I still had no clue what was happening, turned to my partner, and it was the same reply, but hey, it may get better so why not.

I wish I had listened to that devil on my shoulder telling me to turn it off.

Oh, and once again, a rich guy has a whole platoon of armed guards to protect him, but for some reason, as soon as the shooting starts, they're not there. Maybe it was a clause in their contract not to fire a weapon, or could the first aider have been off that day.

Plus, it actually has 31 producers!! Did they do a scene themselves, because it felt like that to me.

Bloodline (III) (2018)

Excellent horror film
9 January 2022
I know a lot of people seem to compare this with Dexter, however, I have never seen Dexter so I can't compare. So, off from what I have just watched, its a great horror film. This is Seann William Scott's first main role in a horror film. Yes, he was in Final Destination, but then he was still kind of acting as he did in other films, like American Pie etc.

This was a complete change for him. I hate it when we have actors that are associated with a certain genre, they can never hardly break free. But some do (Dwane Johnson, Jim Carrey are others that have branched out and done very well).

So, straight from the off in this film, its a killing. Not gonna give anything away, but I for one was a bit surprised at some of the turns this film had.

Hat's off to Seann for taking on this role, and hope to see many more. Plus the music is pretty good as well.

What? I Can't Hear You??
8 September 2020
Yes, its a classic film. Yes, it has Gene Hackman in it, and briefly Leslie Nielsen. Yes, there is no cgi, just good old fashioned special effects.

But you can see the many differences to modern day films.

  • All the women in the film seem to be of an hysterical nature, when faced with a dead body, water, a closing door, a ladder, a tunnel, a bridge, even the metal pipe banging to tell the outside world you're alive. Screaming, crying, telling the world they can't stand it. For some reason, none of the men were like this, even that annoying little brat.
  • The main character, Gene Hackman is supposed to just be a preacher, but he also seems to be a ship engineer, knows which parts of the ship to go to over the other 100's of people. One thing he's not though, is good at first aid when someone has issues swimming.
  • What's with all the shouting? No-one went further than 1 minute without shouting to each other. No matter if stood next to them, lets yell 'I'M RIGHT, YOU'RE ALL WRONG!!!!!' all the time.

Be Wary of Escape Rooms Appearing From Nowhere
6 August 2020
I can't see why this film got a slating. Sure, its nothing like the famous Saw films, but then its not supposed to be.

Some friends are a bit bored on a birthday bash, and get a few invites (not cheap) to an Escape Room. Sure, why not, far better than going out around town with that cash.

Anyways, they get there, and starts off nice and relaxed before it notches up a few gears.

Watch it with your mind not expecting top cgi or well known cast, and you may enjoy it a bit.

But I do agree with a few others, they could have made the ending a lot more.

A Dark Song (2016)

Warning: Spoilers
Why the high rating, anyone's guess. For me, no chance.

Its starts of pretty slow, and it just never gets there, where ever there is. I kept watching as there were times I felt like it'll kick in...but then dropped again.

Basically, without giving it away, this woman wants to see her son again, who died. So, she enlists the help of an occultist to read and perform a load of rituals. But that's about it, its just reading stuff, throwing some water over her, reading, pacing around, having an argument, him being dominant.....and then the ending is, er...er...hmmm.

Some say its good, I'm not one of those. But if you have seen the trailer, its nothing like that. As usual, they string all the intense scenes together, and voila, a trailer.

Pet Cemetary Upgrade
29 July 2020
This was a good film, brought to the screen by the Hammer team, which is great. After their age old classics with Peter Cushings etc, this film brings in the new blood.

The scenes are well done, not over the top and no cgi, all good old special effects. And you can certainly sympethise with the parents on why they wanted their daughter brought back.

Its a dark film, but what I like about this film compared to others, is it doesn't throw you into a story you have no idea why. Its has a backdrop, so that you can understand why they went the path they did.

When you reach that breaking point
26 July 2020
Excellent action film, just goes to show what can happen when you finally do snap. We've all been there, listening to the radio, stuck in traffic, everyone beeping horns, you're late for work, a cyclist belts down the outside...and then you just feel like getting away from it all.

That's what this film is about, how one guy snaps and finally takes it out on others. But for me, and anyone that has visited a burger/diner type place can relate to, is when he wants to buy his breakfast. Its so true, not giving it away, but when you see that, have a think about other menu's you've seen yourself.

When will Gwen Die??
19 July 2020
Okay, I went into this film not expecting much, and yes, its a low budget film, and yes you can spot that with the camera's etc.

I actually started to enjoy it, as there is (kind of) a story there. But there is a lot of vulgarity, references to a lot of horror films, and Rock/Metal music. Having said that, there are some characters you can be happy (if that's the word) watching.

Leo was great, he only managed to get to Blood Fart Lake later, but his one-liners were okay. But Gwen.....She was sooo annoying. I was praying for her to die, straight from the first minute she appeared. Remove her, I would up this rating to a 7.

Decent Suspense Film
18 July 2020
Pretty decent suspense type horror, plenty of twists and turns that you would expect, and as its not a high busget film, don't expect this to be a polished film. Sure, there are some rough edges here and there, but there were a few things that I didn't expect.

Basically, if you watch the film, go into it not expecting the earth, and you may be surprised.

And, unfortunatly in the UK, there are plenty of B&B's called Eden Lodge, so be careful out there :)

An interesting concept. Take a deserted island, pop in loads of zombies, charge the earth, give out free champagne and guns, and leave everything to chance with a computer program and electricity. What could possibly go wrong?

Word of warning: if you get migrains etc, and like watching films in the dark, the start with the news clips is very static/interference style. My eyeballs were all over the place at times.

Pretty decent film, but just goes to show what can happen with genetic engineering, and all that messing around with splicing DNA can cause.

The story itself is good, and you can actually sympathise with all the characters.

Of course, in real life, this won't ever happen, splicing dna from a couple of species.....

Decent Serial Killer film
5 July 2020
Quite a decent serial killer film, about a guy that not many people will have heard of, me included. It started off a little confusing, as there seems to be two guys involved, but I think that just shows how the police may have been misdirected at the time. But once we managed to join the film where ever scene moves in the same order, it was easier to understand.

The acting was good from all, and it certainly took you away from the famous 'only one person does it', which you'll understand when you've finished watching it, as the fear is there for all concerned.

Yep, its the usual run of the mill story: couple move into a place and are stalked by someone that may want to do them harm....or does he? Very good film, and please stick it out, as the ending has a great twist.

But one question I do wanna know: Why is it in some films (mainly US as the UK has tiny, bendy roads) do people insist of jogging in the middle of the road? What's wrong with that empty pavement?

Good Horror, with choices
13 November 2019
This is a good horror film. The poor victims have to choose what they would like done to them, and the helpful murderer makes sure they get what those asked for.

Its a lot different to other films, and the main person in the film, Fiona Wagner (played by Katheryn Winnick) had to choose way back as well, on who out of her family she would prefer to be alive or dead.

Definatly one to watch

13 November 2019
Well, what a film. At the start its quite comical, with the one-liners etc when the zombies appear.....and then it gets boring. Its constant, with the same one-liners, and some other stuff thrown into the mix. If you like your horror comedies to be so full of attempts to make it funny instead of just concentrating on some sort of a plot, this one's for you.

Its a disaster within a disaster movie
6 October 2019
I have liked Eli Roth's films, since I watched Cabin Fever, and then of course Hostel 1 and 2 (don't include 3, not directed by him). So, I was looking forward to watching this film.

And of course, I wasn't dissapointed. It also star's Eli as well, just like Hostel did (he was in the Amsterdam coffee shop). But in this film, he takes more of a central role.

Starts off a bit slow, as in you wonder when the horror will start, as its all nightclubs and drinking, but then all of a sudden, it kicks in....and in, and keeps kicking till the end.

As usual with many horror or action films, you tend to know who the 'winner' is, but in this one, its a bit unerving, as the one you expect turns to become one you didn't, and so on....But its a great movie.

If you love horror, watch this.
