Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
A firm favourite
Lars remains one of my all-time favourites. Emily Mortimer's performance especially awesome. It's a marvel that the sensitivity the film succeeds in treading in the extreme of the setup.
Roma (2018)
Stunning
I found this utterly stunning. The visual storytelling is incredible. The gentle camerawork is sumptuous and I was drawn into the emotion of the world - caring for the characters to the point of crying & laughing with them. Cuarón again delivers huge set pieces on another level. I hope this Film wins every award going!
Madeline's Madeline (2018)
Not for everyone
I failed to get onside with this experimental style which too often focused away from the plot's most intriguing moments
Sound of My Voice (2011)
A true cult hit!
I loved this film. Clever, funny & intriguing we are drawn into an excellent world without frills or explosions. This is a true character-driven drama and one of my favourite films.
Muriel's Wedding (1994)
Yes Muriel!
This film was a surprising joy - clever characterisation and consistent laughs are delivered in this great crowd pleaser. Never enough happy endings at the movies!
Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)
Christmas Zombie Fun
There's loads to love in this energised romp of musical zombie fun. The baddies have some panto moments and a low-Budget opening distract a little but can't undermine the joy of this film. A crowd pleaser.
Dead in a Week (Or Your Money Back) (2018)
A crowd pleaser in Corsica
This film played to a packed cinema in Ajaccio for the British Film Festival - the audience loved it and all stayed for a very good Q&A with director Tom. Very funny clever film.
Colette (2018)
A hot mess
The film is beautiful but Dominic West's Willy proves distracting. The staccato storytelling told across an extended timeline undermines the character arcs and our care for them wanes...
Simon Killer (2012)
Big punch with simple budget
This film was a real inspiration to me when starting out as a filmmaker - it's compelling & dark & intriguing and shows that it's a good story that makes a great film!
