Forget the book
22 April 2023
Rarely can it be said that the film betters the original book but this knocks the book into a cocked hat. Great story, great production and locations. Every actor is in their A game. Even the bit players. Only before have I thought one film was better than it's book. The Omega Man bettered the original book (I Legend). I would also argue for Soylent Green being better than "Make Room, Make Room". (Sorry, I have a bit of a thing for the post apocalyptic stuff.

Stand out scenes have to be Theo visiting his brother to the Sound of the. Crimson King by Pink Floyd and the introduction to the home of Michael Caines scientist now weed farmer. Sir Michael listening to 'zen music' is not to be missed.

Stylish

Stylish, graphic and enjoyable. The lead character got on my nerves but hey ho. The whole film has a great style both visually and musically. It somehow reminded me of Clockwork Orange. Watch it and see.

Others have gone into it but the whole style sticks with you and the game scenes are what you would hope for. Some great things coming out of South Korea of late. Train to Busan is a great example. A must see.

Is it PC or not PC?

Whatever you decide it's brilliant comedy. It nails the point home that we are all the same even if someone has a physical disadvantage. Yep, even the severely physically disabled can be utter b***ards.

A tour de force
16 April 2021
You would do well to see it's Cranston in the lead. He is a chameleon and the makeup, voice and mannerisms perfect. A President to rival Lincoln in terms of internal achievements but paid too little attention to his foreign policy. Well, given his achievements that's forgiven. This shines a light on his place in US history. I only wish they did a follow up and show his completing the voting act and the Vietnam war he inherited grinding him down. A great actor and cast shining a light on a great great albeit flawed man.

As classic a Christmas movie you can get
27 December 2020
Full of pathos, self sacrifice, comedic scenes and is at times a unashamedly cheesy. But the Duke and rest of the cast deliver a great feel good film. You won't regret the time.

A watershed

Warning: Spoilers
Kenneth Branagh is joined by a great cast. This was required viewing when it was on. Watching the spoilt entitled public school boy adapt and change to imposed reduced circumstance has not been bettered. Highly recommended

Solid good versus bad - perfect Sunday treat
7 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Stumbled onto this film on a Sunday afternoon. Not a large budget or what was spent probably went on Fonda. Antony Perkins is perfect as the green sheriff willing wanting to learn his trade. Fonda perfect as the experienced bounty hunter who we learn was previously a sheriff. The baddie is bad. (Great character acting)! The townsfolk hostile to the bounty hunter and indifferent to the sheriff. It's been said this is no John Ford cinematic treat and I agree. But for pure white hat versus black hat you will enjoy Fonda's wise teaching.

It's a bit of an English oddity but....

You have to live Burton camping it up as a psychotic mum loving gangster. It's all a bit small budget but if you stumble upon it you will enjoy it. It's quite violent in places as Burton is proper psych!!

Watchable again and again

There is something about these plot situations I feel is repeatedly watchable. If you like this watch Robert Redford in Havana.

A last hurrah
13 September 2019
It was a last great action adventure for many of the great actors and movie stars in the cast. The sun was setting but one and all showed the permanence of class. Who cares Burton and others were too old to be believable for this sort of mercenary hokum? Best two death scenes in a film without gratuity. You know what I mean. Loved it.

Was it really released in 1958?
28 August 2019
I have to admit to loving watching Hammer films which throughout my childhood seemed to be a regular late night weekend feature. But even now it seems incredible this was released in 1958. Compare it to the white hat (good guy) westerns Hollywood was churning out at the time.
