Vic Reeves Big Night Out (1990)
Pretty damn silly, but pretty damn good too.
OK, before watching this show, it is important that you are aware that the next 30 minutes is going to be full or randomness, silliness, and general surrealism. For example, Vic's assistant Les, is scared of chives, but smiles in delight at spirit levels. A pair of talking carpets, who's catchphrases are "You lying get", that could get tiresome, but they manage to keep it fresh by adding surreal quotes in between. If I were compare this to anything, I would say it would be like the 'Trout Mask Replica' by Captain Beefheart of the Television. At first you'll be thinking "What the hell is this?", after a while, you'll love it. If you enjoy this, be sure to get 'The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer', it is funnier, and is more of a sketch show, but equally surreal.
The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer (1993)
Superb!
Simply fantastic. My joint favourite sketch show of the nineties (with The Fast Show, although they were different, TFS was purely sketch), these men are geniuses, in a really silly way. The brand of humour, is, well insane. Masterchef 1995 is one of the funniest sketches I have ever seen, as is the Stars in Their Eyes sketch. Not just because of the George Michael impression, but because of lines such as "Here's your host with the roast, Matthew Kelly", and "Hello, my name is *twitch* Bill Decker and I *twitch* am a murderer", and of course "Here's Pat and Dave with the Simon and Garfunkel classic, Good Vibrations." They manage to do no brainer comedy in a way which has attempted to be imitated many times since, but has never been successful. Other great sketches include: Councilers Ray Cox & Roy Evans (or is it the other way) which also starred Little Brittain "Star", George Lucas. (He's a lot funnier in this as the mayor than any Little Brittain sketch, however, Rock Profile was good comedy). The South Bank Show, with Mulligan & O'Hare, a hilarious singing duo. Slade On Holiday and In Residence. The Farting Frenchmen (fart jokes that are actually funny and inventive). Pat & Dave, the bra wearing men from Hartlepool(spelling?). And of course the "Commercial Breaks".
Top quality comedy from two Top Quality comedians, it's a shame they have failed to reach this height since.
Monkey Trousers (2000)
Losing their touch?
OK, I laughed at the first episode, it was funny (except that awful vicar sketch, that just isn't funny), there were some good funny characters with potential. By the second episode, all the jokes were simple repeats and just not funny. I have been a fan of Vic & Bob as far as I can remember, and know how creative they are, this was bitterly disappointing.
The other actors are also well below par in this show, Steve Coogan is usually great, as is Allistar McGowan, and John Thompson.
Better luck next time?
Hopefully they can return to there greatness like The Smell Of Reeves And Mortimer or Vic Reeves' Big Night Out, they were great comedies.
Hullabaloo: Live at Le Zenith, Paris (2002)
Not quite as good as the Absolution DVD, but still awesome.
Live from The Zenith in Paris, British rock band Muse perform brilliantly in-front of a packed arena. Songs are from their first two albums, Showbiz and Origin Of Symmetry.
Critically acclaimed for their live performances, Muse do not disappoint here. Some almost insane displays and technically brilliant music from all three guys, this is definitely worth buying if you are a Muse fan or a fan of rock music. They are without doubt the best British rock band of the last 6 or so years, and one of the best live bands in the history of music. They are my favourite band, and are technically far superior to their contemporaries, such as Franz Ferdinand, Kasabian or Kaiser Cheifs.
Overall, a great DVD, disc 2 is nothing to rave about though, a couple of neat little features, but nothing special.
If you like this, then you will love the Absolution tour, it has some newer songs, and give a better (which is very hard to do) performance than on here, a definite recommendation.
The Simpsons (1989)
Past it's time now, but it was possibly the funniest thing since Laurel and Hardy.
There was one time, around about season 7, when every episode would have me laughing so hard I'd cry, the jokes were hilarious, the gags were very funny, and every character was brilliant and unique. For example, the episode with the Movementarians, that episode has to be one of the funniest episodes of any show ever. Lately however, it seems to have gone down the pan. The jokes seem less quality, the story lines are getting TOO far fetched and just not good. Now I would only get a couple of small chuckles from each episode, where as 10 years ago, every episode would be filled with brilliance, brimming with brilliance and so many laughs you would cry, no though, I feel it may be time to put the old dog down.
