Love Is Blind (2020)
How about picking a cast of people who are actually single?
Watching season 6 and I love the premise of the show overall, but for crying out loud. With all the news coming out about 2 of the highly featured/main guys not even being single while applying/on the show is ridiculous. Surely there are some interesting people out there who are actually single. We all know reality shows aren't "real" but all this info coming out is ruining the illusion and kind of spoiling the ending. I'll be rolling my eyes when the non-single guy and his fiancée say no at the altar, because duh. He's taken! Season 6 overall feels ruined and spoiled so far and hopefully we get a better, single cast next season.
Squid Game: The Challenge (2023)
Only interesting because of the facts never mentioned.
Who put this show together? I've been seeing the contestants making TikToks about how games like Red Light Green Light took like 8 hours to film in a freezing cold warehouse? Was this not deemed important enough to mention in the show? It ups the stakes, explains some behavior I originally pegged as dramatic for a 5 minute game, and knowing these behind the scenes facts would have made the show more interesting. I wonder what other context we missed in the other events. I'm giving it 5 stars in retrospect given the new info I've learned, but the show alone is worth less. Having that info to begin with would have upped my rating.
Physical: 100 (2023)
Entertaining, but some spots were dragged out.
I loved the premise and how friendly and respectful most people were with each other. I'm glad there wasn't anyone edited to be a "villain" for drama. I also appreciated how they seemed to want to showcase different strengths and body types, breaking stereotypes about what strength is and looks like.
The challenges were interesting and while I'm glad we were able to see everyone participate and get to know each contestant, the filming of some challenges felt really dragged out. One challenge covered multiple episodes and I was just waiting for it to end.
The final battle was also a disappointment. I was expecting something big that encompassed all types of strength like an obstacle course, something that the contestants could do together. The little games they did instead were very lackluster following all the much more complicated stuff they did previously. And if the rumors are true about the re-filming controversy with the last challenge, that would be even more disappointing.
Ms. Marvel (2022)
I enjoyed it!
It was refreshing having a show in the MCU centered around high schoolers that actually acted like high schoolers. As much as I love Spider-Man, the Spider-Man movies did always feel like adults playing kids. I knew the downside was that the show would feel aimed at a younger audience, and so I kept that in my expectations while watching. It wasn't as "Disney" as I was expecting, so it was better than my expectations in that way. There were a few spots that showed an unrealistic lapse of judgment from a few characters, but overall it kept my attention and was a fun series. Just don't go in expecting a cinematic masterpiece.
Is It Cake? (2022)
Fun concept, but annoyingly the viewer can't play along
Fun concept but the distance between the cakes and the judges felt annoyingly far. Do they have a better view than the camera or something because I couldn't see any of the details they claimed to see, so I was confused.
If the viewers aren't meant to play along, actually show us more of the bakers' techniques when making the cake. It feels like they only edited in the "funny dialogue" rather than anything we could learn from/be impressed with.
Also I wanted to play along and guess the final product at the end of each episode but they showed the cake & real products for only a split second on the screen, and there were no close ups of the cake at different angles at the end so we couldn't actually appreciate, (or see...) the final product.
It just felt like random guessing, not skill. There's know way the judges could see anything.
Also... why are most of the contestants just sitting on their butts watching 3 people bake at a time? Organize the show in a way that we can actually see ALL the contestants bake each episode.
Remember Me (2010)
DONT READ ANY REVIEWS
Half the reviews without spoiler warnings spoil the entire ending so come back to IMDB after watching.
That being said, I liked the story and the actors. When I watched it for the first time in high school the ending stuck with me for a while. I usually get over movie endings pretty quick.
The Tinder Swindler (2022)
A lot of context and relatability was missing.
I don't agree with the victim blaming and gold digger accusations, but I understand coming to that conclusion. We don't go deep and get a lot of details into these relationships between the women and the swindler. Just a bunch of "I love you" "Good morning" texts are shown and then suddenly they're sending large sums of money after a few months of dating. How did it get to that point??
The filmmakers didn't do a great job of anticipating questions the audience would have. What was the timeframe for all of this? What made the women trust him with their passport details (one even before meeting in person?) Did the women ever question why they out of all the potential people in a billionaire's life needed to be the ones to take out these loans? What's the excuse for where his "family" is in all of this? Where there any women who didn't fall for his scam? What do they think?
I wouldn't take out loans like that for any reason. If a guy was in hot water like that with a bunch of enemies I'd be too scared to get involved. I'd be out before he even asks for money. I really needed more of an insight as to why these women stayed and did all that. They just said they were wanting to help... I like helping people too but it's too simple of an explanation for such a complex situation.
Overall though, it was an fascinating watch.
Eternals (2021)
Too big of a plot for a movie introducing this many new characters
It took a whole hour before I even understood the point of this movie. The audience should have been let in on the big picture much sooner.
There were a ton of new characters introduced. Despite the backstory of these characters feeling like it absolutely DRAGGED on, I still didn't feel emotionally connected to any of them. It's unfortunate because the Eternals as a concept fascinated me and their history opened a lot of interesting questions for the Marvel universe.
They got thrown into too much too soon. They deserved a better introduction. The movie ended and I still don't care about any of the characters like I did after every other MCU character's intro movie. With this movie I see a lot of potential for the Marvel universe as a whole, but the cool plot potential came at the expense of a chance for the audience to connect with these characters. It's really a shame.
Black Widow (2021)
The point of the movie doesn't revolve around Black Widow.
I went in not having seen the trailer so maybe it's my fault for expecting to see Black Widow's origin story. She 100% deserves one and this falls flat. It takes place between a couple past movies and I had a hard time keeping the timeline straight at first. I honestly didn't understand the point to this movie as I was watching. It felt like a filler. Only at the end did I realize the whole point was probably to introduce another character who is hinted at becoming a more important character in later MCU movies. They really didn't do Black Widow any justice. Hopefully she gets a better movie in the future.
Cruella (2021)
It's great as a stand-alone movie, but I'm disappointed in the incomplete connections to the original animation.
The acting, costuming, and story was great, but I left the theater wondering, "Is this actually Cruella? Did I miss something?" I'm left with more questions.
She never really blamed the Dalmatians for her mom's death. She blamed herself, then Baroness. She then got close to the dogs seemingly... raising and giving their puppies as gifts. Gifts she... steals back in the original? What made her hate Dalmatians again? Also it's implied that Pongo and Purdy were siblings, so...?
She got mean with Jasper and Horace, but went back to being nice. So what made her mean again in the original?
An easy explanation could be that she's just crazy and unpredictable but I still can't imagine the "Cruella" Jasper and Horace being so willing to kill puppies like the "101 Dalmatians" Jasper and Horace were.
The lack of connection to the original left me disappointed and unsatisfied overall.
