Savior Complex (2023)
Ego Journey disguised in altruism
Unfortunately Renee Bach is not a savior, nor a crusader and much less a saint
She got away with murders due to her funds, and resources, bullying as well and the faith and need of people
She actually denied performing medical procedures, when there is actual footage, in which she disregards and disrespects medical trained professionals, because she thinks she's better.
-One of the "Serving his Children" advertisements has Renee Bach surrounded by children's photos and a celestial light above her, which only supports her Narcissistic personality. She had many years to manipulate through religion, to achieve her Ego Journey disguised in altruism.
-Renee's big mistaken was to appear on this documentary, she is exposed and clearly caught off guard with questions she can't answer or blatantly denies.
-Jackie Kramlich an actual nurse and volunteer is portrayed as contentious and a snitch, but she is actually the only one that sees all wrongs and the endangerment around
-It's shameful, that self righteous individuals feel entitled to control and manipulate the lives of people who are less fortunate in many ways, and believe they are the poster child for goodness when they only damage.
Good Grief (2023)
Meaningless and Shallow experiment
I expected the film to revolve around grief, but it is mainly about very superficial and self centered people
Very nice settings, and the point of pushing the high end world of the main characters, rather than letting it flow naturally as part of the background.
Marcus the main character doesn't go anywhere, Daniel Levy doesn't come through with any sincere feelings (sorrow, depression, anger, jealousy, joy) he talks about them but the acting is tepid as best. So the character has a comfortable, monotonous life with no big purpose nor inspiration; before and after the husband's death.
The supporting characters revolve around Marcus, and don't provide much to the plot, nor become essential drivers of the film.
Doesn't fall into comedy, drama, nor romance but just people doing emotionless dialogues
So it's a soulless, aimless, shallow movie, without messages, subtexts, truths, realizations, inspiring ideas nor sympathy.
Mindcage (2022)
Not a ripoff.
Unfortunately it's not up to the level of Silence of the lambs/ Seven/Fallen , tried but failed to copy the formula of the new detective going with the serial killer for help, so that's not new nor intriguing.
-This movie lacks intention, intelligence, and it's not thrilling. A seasoned actor, John Malkovich tries to step away from the Lecter character, but he is not interesting, haunting and his motives are really a quick excuse from his past . There's a lack of the education, nonchalance, cleverness and sophistication of Dr. Lecter, so there are no specific qualities nor uniqueness in this character, nor any provided by Malkovich.
-Detective Mary as well is no Clarice, which had the eagerness, empathy, fear and nervousness of a new detective with an immense profesional and ethical challenge. There are not many puzzles to be answered, because they are given easily to her, so it becomes step 1 will take you to step 2 and so on
-Detective Jake as the mature detective, doesn't bring anything relevant to the plot, much less compared to Denzel Washington. Martin Lawrence has nothing to do there, he doesn't have the range to show trauma, torment, loss, grief; he just seems and plays irritated (not even anger or rage). He doesn't articulate and it's hard to understand.
-The ending attempted to recreate fallen, quick and uncalled for, because the movie evolved from thriller to supernatural at the last minute.
-It's not a ripoff because it's amazingly bad in all levels, plot, dialogues, motives, back stories and acting; just a clumsy patchwork of other movies (iconic: storyline, scenes, characters, music) without the intelligence, work and creativity.
Squid Game: The Challenge (2023)
Soulless and Uninspired game show
The idea is to capitalize on the series, but to compare it is let down
While the original Korean series was original, provocative, and gripping; it also had well rounded characters
The characters were hateful, endearing, heroes, villains underdogs and relatable, the game show has people, and none are very distinctive to root for them or even like them.
There were complete stories behind the characters, and the participants in the game show have regular lives.
There are few surprising elements, with no heroes to be sad or happy for.
Nice production values and that's it because there is no new plot or story line, no mystery, intrigue, nor thrilling elements, just some small dramas.
So it's a money making production that lacks all the soul and heart that the Korean production has.
The Wilde Wedding (2017)
A Waste of Resources
An unfocused, shallow and uninteresting film, lacking purpose and point
The characters are cliches: the movie star, the philanderer writer, the egotistical actor etc, with no opportunity to see past these stereotypes.
The movie loses focus when it doesn't have a character; the comedy, drama, profound scenes don't go anywhere, they all stay superficial due to poor dialogues and depthless directing.
There are amazing actors who have shown their talent through the years, unfortunately these same actors are to curated; aesthetic is chosen over acting.
The mature cast has no relevant interaction with the middle aged nor younger cast. So there are not many laughs, tears, surprise, suspense through the whole emotionless film. There is not much sympathy for the characters who don't generate connection between themselves and less so with the audience.
There is not much of a climax or a build up, just people doing their lines, with no apparent reason to be, to do; there is no evolution, redemption, in any one of these characters .
Good music, beautiful house and scenery; but any incredible waste of these for such a bland movie, a huge squandering of talented actors because they were kept "pretty" rather than capitalizing on their proven talent.
Monster (2022)
No Redeemable Qualities
A very unfortunate serie, with no purpose to be, no values, not a tribute for the victims but the exploitation of cruelty and human suffering
The series goes into gruesome details of the crimes committed, with no shame nor respect for the victims and surviving relatives
The acting as good as it might be, the production and directing are inglesa when there is no lesson, but just a point of perpetuating hatred and injustice
There is no depth to the characters, just anecdotes that do a poor job of explaining their motives, and actions.
There is no reason to glorify a criminal, bring back a dark moment in time that had a ripple effect on a community and country
Ryan Murphy and his cast are very talented and gifted artists, they took an unnecessary risk for the sake of controversy, without stepping back for a minute and reflecting on the live victims. Not every subject matter has to be developed for the sake of entertainment, or unhealthy fascination with the macabre.
There is a lack of respect for the viewer, the ones who suffered and the killer's family. The producers, actors and director have the amazing opportunity to communicate, the responsibility to create with higher standards, transmit values, hope and the better of humans, instead of nothingness, existential voids, and people without any redemption quality.
The Starling (2021)
Lovely with depth
The movie has more depth than expected
It deals with the complexity of grief and pain of the two main characters
Two different roads for two different people , one through actual therapy and the other on its own and later indirect therapy
It shows the frailty, vulnerability and the complexity of emotions during the loss process
The starling is a third character, used as metaphor and bridge for understanding, resilience, development and human expression and emotional range - anger, sorrow, happiness, desperation, depression, hope
Both Melissa McCarthy, and Chris O'Dowd are unique in their honest performances, without falling into unnecessary corny excessive acting.
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Interesting for 20 minutes out of 2 hours
This is a movie without character nor direction; it's not drama, thriller, and not horror
Amanda Seyfried seems to be a supporting character, around a plot that has no sense.
Locations are nice, in a very long and boring film that never takes off.
Waste of a talented cast.
Station 19: No One Is Alone (2021)
Touching
Maybe it's me, because I love this show
This episode was extremely touching and the acting was remarkable
Amazing actor and incredible characters Vic and Travis which deserved an episode foe them and showcase their talent.
Nomadland (2020)
Amazing Journey and Reflection of Life
Nomadland
The wonder of this movie is the journey the main character goes through. It's about why matters in life, and certainly there is a strong Zen philosophy about happiness.
The story reflects and questions what is important in life: comfort, possessions, control, security, jobs, needs, depth of relationships etc in order to be happy.
It deals with the way we see and manage loss, our attachments and suffering through the eyes of Fern the main character and the people she finds in her path.
It's a visual ride between the movement and stagnancy of life and how we decide to look at it: as tragedy, a blessing; or perhaps just a road to travel.
This is an amazing opportunity to ponder about our purpose in life, what we do for others, how we adapt and surrender our ego, our real beliefs opposed to social constructs and religious beliefs.
As well the unity with nature and existence, being true to oneself, and our respect to life and the universe.
The nomads, these seemingly outsiders who move around, a culture and life outside the standards, show a very vast world outside the centralized cookie cutter lives we are used to see and experience.
Poetic and smooth, deep and true without the need of gimmicks or special effects, a wonderful story, magnificent cinematography , and pure fine and honest acting.
The Last Cruise (2021)
Contrast between working class and white privileged people
The start was promising, the development failed
The interesting contrast is between passengers, which most don't have a clue of humility and love in a bubble: then you have the crew.
For them or was cramped windowless spaces, sharing with sick peers, working for the passengers and not being tested or quarantined as the passengers
There are unfortunate comments regrading comfort, complaints about frozen food, being bored, the crew nor being as friendly, and using face masks - in the middle of a pandemic (The passengers obviously)
So it presents the real struggle, fear and injustice from the crew vs the selfish complaints, superficial remarks and self centered world of passenger (one just loved the kimono type pijama she was wearing at the hospital in Japan as she tested positive)
This could have had more depth by having more diversity among the passengers and crew
Filtering the comments to balance the end results, more interest in the emotional experience and effects rather than then daily domestic circumstances.
It's wasn't challenging for the "cast" nor the audience, and remains as a description of events without covering more important topics: humanity, fragility, fears, hopes, consciousness or responsibility.
Lovecraft Country (2020)
A Must See
Lovecraft Country
-Besides being an eye opening serie, it's an incredible, heart breaking, historic, racial journey
-Wrapped in a sci-fi, gothic, magic plot, it clearly shows injustice, inequality, prejudice, segregation, small mindedness, and so much damage inflicted with impunity over time by white privilege (overt inequality in all aspects: socially, legally, spoken and written word, human rights, health, transportation, education, housing, etc)
-The main characters /actors are incredibly well developed with depth, raw emotions and intimate personal drama.
-Visually is spellbinding, from the period costumes and sets to the visual effects, and the music and score couldn't be better.
-Every single episode will bring conflicting emotions to the audience, discomfort, rage, sorrow, guilt, hope, reflection, empathy and maybe conscience. It questions how free are we, and how free do we let others be. A Must See.
Cats (2019)
Endless, strange, lack luster
The movie spoils such an acclaimed play
Memories which is the song- was arranged without the splendor we are used to, a waste of Jennifer Hudson's voice
A waste of talented actors, singers and dancers
It's not emotional, interesting nor charming
Great costumes and sets (though the proportions are off )
It's rather painful to watch Dame Judy Dench, Sir Ian McKellen play these roles and trying to sing - just not for them
The transition to a movie makes the play lose its charm, amazement, originality into a chaos
Dragnificent! (2019)
Lovely show with a lot of heart
Unlike drag contests (and I do love RuPaul)
This show deals with people form all walks of life, and truly gives them confidence and a positive view of themselves
The stories are personal, and the queens between laughs and camp do have a lot of heart and care for the participants
Lovely
Station 19: Something About What Happens When We Talk (2020)
One of the best episodes
Without taking out the action
This episode portrayed the sincerity of the characters and amazing performances
Amazing work !!!
Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector (2020)
Poor Directing across the board
The tone is confusing, trying to handle mystery, pretending to be funny, and smart - so it becomes a mess.
The same happens with the actors which haven't developed their characters accurately, thus the interaction is erratic, and with no visible chemistry. The actors are not working as a unit, and unfortunately their performance seems cliche, exaggerated, and insincere.
The story lines could have been interesting, but they are pushed through the main character to be solved by his unrealistic "super deduction powers" in 2 minutes.
Unfortunately the 2 main characters are written, directed and portrayed to be unlikable, irrelevant and hard to believe and empathize with. It was a let down unfortunately
Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind (2020)
Tepid
Some parts regarding Natalie Woods life are interesting, yet again or covers too much time about her death, and the original purpose was to have more depth about her life
Some of it seems too rehearsed, as to clarify that her husband had nothing to do with her drowning. Her career, family dynamics, her role as an actress who takes her own decision in a system managed by producers is more interesting. The audience can keep the honest pieces which are mostly when Natalie wood is interviewed.
Hollywood (2020)
Fantastic Inspiring
Amazing
Many truths about Hollywood based on Scotty Bowers writing, and others based on actual events of the Hollywood 40's jet set
Ryan Murphy must be the inspiration for the Dick Samuels character, as he in real life "is changing the face of Hollywood" , as well as the mindset of people in general who have had the privilege of viewing his work. Thank you for Glee, a Normal Heart, AHS, Pose, The New Normal, Hollywood and upcoming projects
Thank you for giving voice, visibility, dignity, Love and redemption to those which haven't had it openly or have been obscured by beliefs and tight social structures.
Many of us from older generations are amazed to see and live these changes that just a few decades ago wouldn't have even imagined
I am very happy to see characters and stories I can relate to, and know all of our lives matter.
Going back to Hollywood, I loved the story line, and certainly the what if's. It is a beautiful way to portray life, unity, equality, individuality and love in different formats
In these times of world crisis, it is a very potent Message to reflect on the what if's if we become better; better friends, colleagues, spouses, and humans that live together in the same world.
Hollywood was created with immense sensibility , respect and hope. There are many production values in presenting a specific period in time, decoration, costumes, hair and makeup. The acting is honest, directed with much care and detail, and balanced between new comers and the depth of seasoned actors; perfect mix of old Hollywood with a new vision.
It's a winner !!!
Isn't It Romantic (2019)
Fun and lovely
A very intelligent view to approach the romantic comedy genre with all the cliches made to laugh
Rebel Wilson is a true comedienne with grace and talent, a joy to watch
Very enjoyable, healthy family fun
Like Father (2018)
Commercial - mildly funny - huge ad for cruise line
The story is basic going on mediocre
Any actor could have done it, unfortunately the talents of Kelsey Grammer and Kristen Bell were wasted
Pretends to be sappy and emotional and it doesn't get there, the distant relationship between dad and daughter resolves on 3 scenes that are not weaved very well
Seth Rogen has a character that doesn't help or hinder the story, another waste
And it the biggest ad for the cruise line - which is too much on your face - any issue can be worked out in a cruise vacation ....not
Crónica de un desayuno (2000)
Painfully bad
A waste of good actors in a project that has no sense nor depth
Pretentious and senseless - with "scandalous - shocking" scenes and story lines that don't add up to anything of significance
She's Beautiful When She's Angry (2014)
Amazing powerful documentary
This is a documentary of women's rights
The story of feminisms, women's studies and social outrage
The movement that started in the 60's -70's with an Echo in the past and the fight for a better future
It re lives what has happened, what has been gained and lost- a reminder which is even more important today that no one can forget the importance of gender equality (specially for younger people who need to learn that generations before them have suffered and fought for justice)
Beautiful Thing (1996)
Memorable beautiful story
It's memorable because it was made 24 years ago - and the LGBT rights and visibility weren't what they are now
Coming of age story / romance with a message of acceptance and the idea of normalcy
And the bonus of the music of Cass Elliot !!
Toy Boy (2019)
Could have been good
The idea was interesting, the story has twists and turns
The final episode doesn't resolve the plot -on the contrary it's Disappointing and absurd
The episodes are too long and the acting is regular regrading the younger cast
Nice place, beautiful homes
Pose (2018)
Magnificent
Season 1 was incredible ....season 2 is even more amazing
It's a recipe for success: unforgettable story and acting, music, depth, laughs, emotions, courage and love
On that note this series was made with love, patron and care starting with the writing, producing, directing acting and anyone involved - it shows
There are particular scenes which are just genial in every way
Pose brings out a wide range of emotions form the audience, because it ya heart, hope and humanity and it's a privilege to watch this type of production
