The Tale of the Dog (2020)
The 60's: Great Music & Poster Art
What a wonderful stab from the past about the amazing but short lived Denver Family Dog. Wonderful stories about groups that played the venue like Canned Heat, The Doors and Janis as well as the best poster artists of all time. Particularly interesting were the clashes between the local cops & the club owners and managers which ultimately shut the place down less than a year after it first opened in 1967.
Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)
Lame
Isn't there supposed to be a plot? AJs makeup was perfect despite fires, shootings etc. But that was about it...
Richard Jewell (2019)
10 for acting, zero for propaganda-filled script
The acting was wonderful in this film, but the stereotyping attacks on the FBI and journalists (especially the woman reporter) were cringeworthy and ridiculous.
Secondhand Hearts (2017)
What Was the Director/Writer Smoking?
It's been years since I've taken the time to switch from the app to the online IMDB site in order to review a film. But Secondhand Hearts was so bad I felt I had an obligation to warn prospective viewers. It was mindless, soulless, plotless and should win an award for being the most boring & meandering movie I've had the misfortune to see in a long time - no small feat as there are so many stinkers these days.
Since there was no plot - just a bad undeveloped story idea - I'm not sure what the ultimate message was. Life sucks and although everyone is unhappy with their status quo, life just goes on? Thanks but no thanks.
The Dinner (2017)
The Dinner is the WORST film of 2017 - quite a feat
The premise of the film was great - the cast even better. So how did it go off the rails in such a major way? The movie began with two couples having dinner at a too-posh-for- words restaurant to discuss a situation involving their sons' possible involvement in criminal activity. The themes were mental illness and the homeless, both topics more than worthy of great script-writing. But the way-too-long film disintegrated into REAL madness and just plain boredom. Oh, and the type of ending that makes you ask yourself, "did I really just waste two hours of my life watching this crap?"
The Gunman (2015)
Good Penn Action Film
I really enjoyed this. Great cast, lots of action. Penn pretty buff for his age. I think the biggest problem was that they tried to cram too much info in the first 20 minutes of the movie, and it starts out confusing the heck out of you. But I am a (good) action film junkie, and I liked this unlike other reviewers who basically placed it in the movie trash bin. Once I understood what was going on, it was interesting to see who his friends were and which ones were solid. Not an Oscar-nominee but enjoyable nonetheless. Penn's acting style has changed since his early days, and I like it. He was very convincing in the role and did a great job with the Krav Maga fighting style used in the film. I also liked the actress who played the female lead. I've never heard of her before, but she did an outstanding job.
Words and Pictures (2013)
Interesting idea for a film, unlikeable main characters
When I saw the plot summary for this film about the eternal battle between the effectiveness of words vs. pictures as the best means of communication, I thought it might be hard to pull off. Kind of like making a movie about a reporter. Their day-to-day work might look repetitious and rather boring to those not in the industry. I was afraid that might be the case for Words and Pictures. But to my surprise, the plot held up for the most part. The disappointment for me came with the personalities of the main characters. Clive Owen and Julietter Binoche are two of my favorite actors, but Completely unlikeable here. The stereotyped drunken, obnoxious over-the-hill teacher/former published author (Owen) and the eternally depressed chronic pain suffering teacher/former famous artist had no redeeming qualities in my opinion. By the last part of the movie when it became obvious the script called for them to be warm, honest human beings, it was just too late. What a shame, because otherwise it could have been a much better film.
