Gimme Shelter (2013)
It was pretty effective
Let me get this out there. Everyone knows that we can't trust the Rotten Tomatoes reviews because they can be critically wrong. They only give us the broader context of the issues of the storytelling in films. And it's no exception here. I've seen and watched several teen pregnancy movies and they do follow under the same formula. Which is fine if used properly with some individuality and less terrible.
I'm judging this film by its own merit. I think it did very well on tackling serious situations on a pregnant girl who suffered abusive, being homeless, and stayed in a shelter with other girls who went through the same situation as her. Watching this movie was hard to watch because it felt authentic in certain areas. I'm pretty cynical when it comes teen pregnancy movies/shows because they were cringe. But this definitely took a toll on my emotions that I didn't think it was possible. I'm not even a mom but I was a child of teen mother. Thankfully she had the support system to help my mom and took care of me. The thing is, most girls don't have the support system at that age and this film gave us a glimpse of what they were going through. It's only scratching the service. My point is that this film was impeccable in its right. Very raw, gritty, heartbreaking, and yet heartfelt. Give this film a go with an open mind.
Mr. Nobody (2009)
It was hard to keep up with it.
Honestly, I didn't watch this when it came out theatrically. I saw it with my younger sister when it was streamed on Netflix back in 2012(?). I remembered that she loved it. I also remembered that I got lost a few times while watching it because I was occupied on something else and didn't pay much attention to it.
Years later, when I watched this movie again. This time, I was paying all my attention to it and I actually did get lost because the film itself was all over the place. Coming from an artist stand point, the cinematography and the designs were fantastic. As for the storyline, it wasn't great. It really was difficult to connect with. I mostly felt bored, frustrated, and unsatisfied. I get what the director/writer was going for because it's coming from "a nine year old child's imagination", but it didn't execute well. If that was the main reason why for everything that happened, it could've gone differently. In my personal opinion, since I write my own material once in awhile, I could've done something different instead of being sporadic. I could go on but it's already a long review as is. I'll end it here. I said what I needed to say. If you're willing to watch this movie, that's fine. Just know what you're signing up for nearly three hours.
Evil Dead (2013)
Some say "yay" and some say "nay".
This is rare for me to give a movie a great rating. When I watch remake films, I am usually skeptical but I try to keep an open mind due to some creative material especially when it's used properly.
I love the OG evil dead franchise. When I heard about this movie. My thought process was, "What is there that needs to be fixed??." But this film utterly terrified me in a fantastic way! The plot was solid, the characters were well performed, and the visuals were top notch. For once, I was rooting for the characters! Ok, except for the one who opened the book😅. I mean, the film would've cut short and didn't serve its purpose of the story if he didn't open read it. But I digress. I understand that some people didn't like this film for their own reasons which is fine. They want to stay true to the trilogy. In my own opinion, I love this remake adaptation.
If you haven't seen this, you're in for a great suspenseful surprise.
The IT Crowd (2006)
I couldn't breathe because I laughed too hard
This show is HILARIOUS!! For a British sitcom, I enjoyed myself. It was nothing but a good time! Every episode to me got funnier and funnier. I consider this my "feel-good-show". If I'm having a bad day or just feeling depressed, I turn this on. It's become one of my favorite shows to watch. Have fun and try not to cry of laughter😂I dare you.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
The show that will forever stand still!
I remembered when this show was on tv when I was little. Of course when you're young, you couldn't watch it. When I turned 15, I watched it for the first time and loved it. It's got some 90s cheese, clever dialogue, and superb chemistry with all the characters. It even gives us great messages that will stick with you. When I have children of my own and want watch the vampire genre, I would have them watch this show. Not only it's a fun time but it also will teach them to be independent and know how and when to stand up for yourself.
I could watch this show whenever I felt like it and never got sick of it. Which I try not to watch it too much otherwise I would. If you haven't seen this show and you like vampires, you haven't.."lived".🤣🤣🤣
Plus, there's a spin-off show called "Angel". If you get into this show, I prefer to watch start watching Angel after season four of this series. I promise you it will get confusing because they do reference Angel from time to time. Anyways, grab a drink and some snacks and enjoy some slaying!
Scream Queens (2015)
Just watch season one.
The first season was entertaining and funny. I don't even why I predicted who the killer(s) was after the first episode. But how it came to be was pretty creative. I give it a decent rating for that.
Season two...it was like a copy-and-paste-plot. And most of it didn't make sense and some characters weren't exactly relevant to the story. I thought the hospital location and the characters trying to be nurses/doctors were just random. I understand that the conclusion had to take place elsewhere but that didn't do it for me. I can see why they never gave it a third season. I don't exactly have to look into it.
I'm giving this a decent rating because the first season was so good. Whenever I turn this on, I pretend that the second season doesn't exist😅.
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (2016)
So..I don't know exactly happened
The show left such an impact on my childhood and I really enjoyed it. And I related to the mother most of the time including her coffee fix😅
But with this short lived series, I felt so empty because the characters were so empty and were much different from the OG series. I can see there are many flaws but there's some sorts of nostalgia there that did get me to watch all the way through. I'm just disappointed on how it turned out for all of them. I was hoping there would a lot to say about the show pretty much said it itself. I'm sorry I wish there was a better review but you gotta see it for yourself. If not, that's totally ok because it's not worth the 4 plus hours to waste on.
Kiss of the Damned (2012)
Vampires after Twilight
This is a pretty pleasant movie if you have a soft spot for vampires. I thought the whole genre died after Twilight overdid it in a bad way. The story I would say is alright. Like, 6/10 for the plot. But the lighting, the camera angles, the timing, and the acting were excellent. It's almost refreshing to see this new take of the genre. This film gives me Interview With The Vampire vibes in a very modern way. If you like that sort of thing, this flick is for you. Just don't watch this in front of your kids. This is vampire movie is for adults!😅
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
It's enjoyable
It's one of those movies that hits the category of 'Guilty Pleasure' movies knowingly most audiences did not like this movie. It's also one of those movies you turn on whenever it's available or you own it and use it for white noise. I liked a lot of elements that was used and how everyone portrayed their characters. But the story itself could've been stronger. I completely understand Johnny Depp's character went a little crazy after he was brought back from the dead. They could've done something else with his psyche without him being excessively awkward. But they used what was different which I give it points for that. Anyways, I'm sure they did the best they can of what they got without finishing the script when they started filming. It's basically a cautionary tale for filmmakers and some of them learn. Even with their mistakes, we enjoyed the movie. When you watch it, y'know what you're getting yourself into and you can decide for yourself. Peace!
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Chapter Thirty-Six: At the Mountains of Madness (2020)
A big oof
So, I was that kid who was born in the early 90s and remembering my childhood in the later 90s to early 2000s. What I enjoyed watching the most was Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
When I heard there was going to be a reboot in a much darker turn, I instantly loved it. Until the series finale. It didn't end strong at all. I wanted to like it because I loved the show so much. I'm not going to spoil it for you. You can see it for yourself to have your own opinion. Just know that I didn't like it.
Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)
It's fine-ish
Let's clear this up before I review this movie; I know there were plenty of negatives against this movie from audiences and scandalous actions that went down outside of this film back in 2012. I saw this movie when it was released on dvd/blue ray. I didn't care too much for it.
Let's focus on the positives. It's going to be a tough one but we'll make it through this. I'm going to try to break this down from the creativity to the acting skills. It's 2020 and let's see if this film has aged well since it's cinematic release.
Okay, so first off, the scenery and atmosphere I can say are very on point. The way they did the camera angles of the creatures and battle scenes did seem like you were there. In some other scenes, they can either be settle or very threatening (which I will get to that later). With the Evil Queen summoning the mirror, her so-called-bathtub-of-youth? Either way, I was at awe with the visual effects with her in it. I like how dark it is through out the film and that's how fairy tales were supposed to be. From what I can recall, the Grimm Brothers wrote stories like these as cautionary tales, figuratively, of course. In a lot of ways, when you overlook certain things, the cinematography is well done.
The costumes of course are gorgeous with the authentic renaissance era. Colleen Atwood has been in the industry for years for designing costumes for previous films. Because of her, she won so many awards. Even for some other films that have been bombed before. Aside from that, her creative eye of designing has paid off.
So, the characters are fine-ish. The acting, hit or miss.
I like how Charlize Theron was portrayed as the evil queen. Especially when it was based off a woman named Elizabeth (even though it's not exactly her name. It's close to what her name is and I can't spell it. And I can't pronounce it at the moment) Bathery. Pretty much what these two women have in common was killing young women to keep her "eternal youth". The Evil Queen steals the show with her unnerving madness to stay young and kill Snow White. For most audiences, we would love to hate her. Like how I mentioned the cameras angles made it seem so threatening when they were facing at her alone. When you look at her, you don't ever want to be in the same room with her.
Along the way, there were additional characters to the film. Which is fine. It makes it seem like their world is much bigger.
Sam Spruell portrayed as The Evil Queen's brother is kind of hard to say because he didn't get that much screen time to grasp what he's like. But from our standpoint, we only see him as her b***h and has no personality. Then again, most of them are. Wait, sorry, positives!! He's good at looking angrily constipated🤷♀️
As for the "dwarves". Honestly, there is no harm on using the visual affects for them. They're obviously not actual dwarves for once. They've got some big actors we know and love. I can name a few actors I know of were in other films and they were always hilarious and they were always serious. With the source material that were provided for them, they pulled it off great.
Sam Claflin as The prince, again, it's hard to say. He didn't get that much screen time either. He looks cool in his outfits...
For Chris Hemsworth as the huntsman, for this film, they made him into one of the protagonists. From what we remember from the original story, he was supposed to kill Snow White and quickly backs down. In this film adaptation, the character was very well done. He helps Snow White take down down the Evil Queen's reign of terror. And I can tell he tries hard for certain things and he did great. I'm trying not to be biased because his other performances are great in other films. Most of it has to do with him getting his big break through Hollywood when he joined the Marvel universe and got offered for parts. Which is cool. It keeps money in the bank.
Oh boy, this is hard. Stay positive! And I'm not just telling it to you guys but for myself!
So *clears throat* Kristin Stewart portrays as Snow White, well, she dyed her black for the part. That's cool. Her costume designs look good on her. Umm, she's better at acting when she's quite and when she's dead for a moment or two. That's it for her...
Alright, for the story itself. I'm going to give myself a pass for one negativity. We all know the story. Like I said early on, I like how dark it is. I like how it was laid out, but the thing is, it's not fully supported by the acting chemistry. Look, there's a difference between the acting with chemistry without trying and the acting that does try to create a chemistry with another actor. It either works or it doesn't work. In general, you can't put one actor who naturally gives chemistry and the other actor who has to try hard to make chemistry work. Even in both ways, it doesn't work because the story is poor. For example, Brenden Fraser and Rachel Weiz had GREAT chemistry in a bad movie which was The Mummy (1999) but I still love it for how it is. And this chemistry doesn't work. I'm not talking about with Chris Hemsworth and Kristin Stewart. I'm talking about most of them. I'm not saying that Stewart is a bad actor but this wasn't right for her. The story just doesn't work at all with them. I mean, give good parts to better actors. Honestly, this was a major red flag for me begin with, because I knew it was going to bomb.
I apologize if I was blabbering towards the end but I hope you guys understand my point of view of this movie. Watching this again for the first time since it came out, it didn't age well.
Hence the acting and the story elements, I'm giving this 6/10 stars.
