Leave the World Behind (2023)
Great cast...Poorly executed storytelling
I was actually pretty excited for this movie, I love the societal collapse theme, so I thought this would be a good one. The cast is great, with handful of bigger names. Ethan Hawke and Julia Roberts were a great couple. Uhhh I'm not sure if they didn't have enough money or what, but Kevin Bacon is barely in it...
BUT...My main issue with this movie, is the abrupt ending...no explanation for some people and events that happen. Unless this is setting up for a franchise or at least a sequel, it's kind of lacking in closure...
Other than that, it was slightly comedic, and again, I love fall of society/apocalypse movies, so I'd say you should at least give it a watch, and judge for yourself...
Go (1999)
Awesome Classic 90's Movie
This is a great all around classic 90's indie film (It can also double as a Christmas movie!!) Even though it was 99, it still counts!
The story is a rollercoaster ride of adrenaline-fueled fun, blending sharp wit with a pulsating soundtrack. This underappreciated gem defies genre conventions, seamlessly weaving together three interconnected stories that are as thrilling as they are hilarious. The dynamic ensemble cast, led by the talented Sarah Polley, Katie Holmes, and Jay Mohr, delivers outstanding performances, each character bringing a unique charm and energy to the screen. Director Doug Liman's stylish direction injects the film with a frenetic pace, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. With its clever narrative twists and turns, "Go" is a wild, unpredictable adventure that remains a true standout in the realm of cult classics.
The Secret Garden (2020)
Barely follows the original storyline
I was excited to see a newer adaptation of The Secret Garden, maybe with some nice special effects and what the manor would look like. This version was quite disappointing...it doesn't really follow the original story, I know movies usually change things so they information translates better visually, but this wasn't great. First it takes place after WWII, as the original take place in the early 1900s, other aspects such as Misslethwaite, catching on fire, had no part in the original story. If you want a good (and family friendly) theatrical adaptation of the Secret Garden, watch the 1993 version! It's a beautiful, and includes Mary talking/dreaming about the Gods and stories she learned from her servants in India.
The Witcher: Blood Origin (2022)
Good watch for Witcher-verse backstory
Call me lame, but I actually enjoyed this miniseries. It's a cool window into The Witcher's universe, and essentially how it came to be. I didn't think it was boring, like a lot of people who like the show, I don't play the game so I have no clue what this world is like. I have a strong feeling that these event and the fact that Jaskier was the one learning/seeing this story for a very specific reason. This story and maybe aspects/characters of the miniseries will possibly tie into this coming third season of the Witcher. All in all, I think that fans and gamers are too critical of game/books to show adaptations, somethings just need to be changed to translate better into a visual, and some things just get cut for time. It's absolutely worth a watch, I liked it a lot.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Was not expecting it to be that funny!
I honestly thought it was just going to be another awful fandom movie, also I really don't actually know very much about Dungeons & Dragons...but I was wrong...it was absolutely HILARIOUS. The cast was great, everyone played a great part...and there were some funny cameos. The story line was good, even though it was definitely geared towards kids, it was still laughable and had some funny parts. I don't think I've actually laughed out loud at a movie so much in a long time. They set it up to possibly have a sequel too, and I hope they do!!! Definitely go see this move if your into a silly comedic fantasy!!
Bama Rush (2023)
Interesting look into sorority rush...but...
I somewhat enjoyed the documentary, and it's look into this crazy world of rushing into sororities at this Alabama university. Greek life seems like a funnel for the rich to create contacts and connections post college. These young ladies featured seemed to make their entire personality about getting into one of these sororities.
The really strange part of this doc was the director...yes...the director for some oddball reason, decided to insert herself into this doc. The director has suffered from a condition called alopecia, which causes you to you to not have any hair. Ok...this has nothing to do with the doc, yes it's unfortunate, but her condition literally has NOTHING to do with the doc!!! I'm not sure why she wanted to make it about herself, but I found it really bizarre, and incredibly annoying. Her slow whispering way of speaking was off putting as well, not sure if she's like over medicating or what...
All in all, the actual parts of the doc, that were actually about rushing, was super interesting. Worth a watch, I guess...
Silo (2023)
LOVE IT!
Wow, what else can I say? I, for one am a huge fan of post apocalyptic/dystopian themes. This one is great, the storyline is original, the cast is fantastic and the set design is super cool. AppleTV honestly has outdone themselves with this one! I love that they show you what's actually outside, first episode. It makes you wonder how long these people have actually been in the silo, why they're in there, and what the heck is beyond the that hill?! I'm absolutely in love with the main character, and cannot wait to find out the secrets of the silo! I hope they have planned for a couple seasons of this show!
Citadel (2023)
Super boring
From the previews, it looks like a big action series, and Stanley Tucci?! Sign me up! I was super excited for this, they hyped it up and everything...
Alas...this show was nothing but mediocre. Stanley plays the same character he always does, the comic relief, even that was a fizzle. I thought it would get better after the first two episodes, laying out the story, but it could barely hold my attention. I wanted to like it but it's just not that great. Amazon prime shows are usually GREAT, this one is definitely a BIG flop. If your looking for something to put on for sound in the background, I guess maybe give it a try.
Queenmaker: The Making of an It Girl (2023)
Not what the trailer was about at all...
After watching the trailer, I was excited to see a doc about the Y2K socialite era, how they climbed to the top, some scandal and where they are now...
Well...the first like 15-20 focused on that a little...mostly on one specific socialite. Then like the flip of a switch, the documentary shifted to a completely different story...about some forgettable gossip/socialite fan girl site, and the "writer" behind it. You could tell by the way they introduced talking about the site, the people who created the documentary were a little biased. The whole story that wasn't addressed in the trailer at all about the writer moving to the big city, getting an great job, only to squander their money and good luck on obsessing over a drug dealer they fell for, while obsessing over New York socialites, and the world they'd never be in...The pathetic "off camera" scene with the director comforting the writer, while she broke down, was ridiculous. The writer themselves droned on and on in an awful monotone slow whisper, it was super cringey. The only where are they now I got was the sad writer...they're now a trans sex worker...literally the worst documentary I've ever seen. They should at least change the trailer, and show what this doc is ACTUALLY about...
The Watchful Eye (2023)
Storyline is interesting, but...
It's a bit all over the place, and for some reason the main character is really annoying. I can't tell if it's just her being a terrible actor or if it's something else...I really couldn't stand the weird slow talking she did all the time, it's almost monotone. It made her sound like a bimbo, and i they made it seem like she supposed to be really smart, but that doesn't really come through for me...Other than that, I like the story line with the mystery around the building and the hidden clues. The set design is cool, but again, it's a bit cheesy, I wouldn't be surprised if they cancelled this one after the first season.
Madeline's Madeline (2018)
Crappy Indie Flim
Poorly filmed Indie flim about a mentally I'll girl trying to be an actor? I don't know, Helena Howard plays an extremely similar character in that awful show the Wilds, where she's in desperate need of a hair brush and medication. Its definitely one of those one and done types of movies that just ends abruptly with zero resolution. What's with the god damn pig masks?! Seriously I almost stopped halfway through, but sat eyes glazed over til the end thinking that it would end better, boy was I wrong. Maybe I just don't get pretentious theater troupe dorks and their acting methods, but god grief, I will never watch again...
