Druk (2020)
Astounding performance from Mads Mikkelsen
Don't go into the movie expecting for 100% comedy. There's a comedic tone in the movie but it's not intended to make you laugh on the floor. It is rather a serious movie about the alcohol culture. Story wise it's successful in showing what it wants to tell you. I really love Mads Mikkelsen's performance here. I love the movie but I wish they'd cut the ending shorter. The dance sequence at the end is a bit unnecessary and ruin the climactic tone of the movie.
First Cow (2019)
Not for everyone
I see lot of people complain about the pacing of the movie. I personally have no problem watching a slow paced movie, in fact I love slow paced movie and most movies that came from A24. My issue with this film is that I don't find any strong emotional connection to the characters. I think mainly because the story is focusing more of the theme of greediness rather than desperation for life. By the time the movie ended, I couldn't find any strong reasons to be empathetic to the characters. I think the movie could be more appealing to larger range of audience if the characters are well developed and more engaging. The movie is still watchable for me, it isn't bad. I love the aesthetic of it. But it could be more engaging.
Sound of Metal (2019)
Outstanding performance, Brilliant sound design, Great movie
I love when a movie shows a story instead of just tells a story to the audience, and this movie is a good example for movies that shows you a story through the lens. The sound design is brilliant in making you experience what the character is going through, taking you into the perspective of someone who's losing his hearing. There's a moment when the movie goes completely silent, and it was a peaceful moment for the character and you can just feel the power of the silence. I just love it.
Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020)
Honest and realistic
This is an honest film about a sensitive subject of abortion. The tone of this film is brilliant in making you feel what these two characters are feeling; anxious, tired confused and helpless. It doesn't force you into the idea of abortion but rather put you into perspective of the struggle of someone having an unwanted pregnancy.
And Sidney Flanigan's performance is OUTSTANDING considering this is only her first time being in a movie. The scene with her and the counselor is my favorite part and definitely the highlight of the film. I love this movie, it was such an overwhelming experience for me, and I wish for more people to see this.
Beautiful Boy (2018)
Strong and impactful
Great story and outstanding performance. The chemistry between Steve Carell and Timothee Chalamet here is so strong and wonderful, and I think it is what that makes this movie works so well. The story is a bit nonlinear and a bit awkward for some people, but I personally don't find it hard to watch.
My only issue with this movie is that it struggles to find the right personality at the earlier phase. The music choice is a bit off the vibe at some part. For example earlier in the movie when Nic disappeared from the rehab and his dad went out looking for him, and suddenly a Nirvana song came out along with some flashback of them listening to the song in the car, I think it's just a misplaced choice of music and killed the whole vibe of the movie. Not that I hate Nirvana, trust me I love Nirvana and I listened to all their 3 albums. It just doesn't fit the personality of the movie. There are couple more examples but i think I made my point.
Regardless of that, it is a wonderful movie, and heartbreaking to watch. It is impactful and I love it.
Tenet (2020)
Not Nolan's best but still enjoyable to watch
I think we all can agree that Nolan is one of the best conceptual writers working today. It's hard to write this review without comparing this movie to his other films. Like Interstellar and Inception, Tenet gives you a mind bending experience throughout the whole movie. The challenge is, how do you tell such a complex concept to the audience?
The first problem with Tenet is that there are too many information given through dialogues in order to make the audience understand the concept, pressuring the audience to think instead of experiencing the movie.
The second problem is, unlike Interstellar and Inception, the character's motivation in this movie is always unclear. In Inception, you have a protagonist who just want to get home to see his kids, and that motivation is always clear throughout the film, and same goes with Interstellar. In Tenet, I'm struggling to find something that I can relate to the protagonist. As a result, the ending is not as impactful as other Nolan's films. A concept can be complex, but a character's motivation should be simple.
Regardless, the movie is still enjoyable to watch. Big production, insane practical effect, thoughtful choreograph (since they are fighting backward), and the music score in this movie is so good despite not having Hans Zimmer as the composer as Nolan always did, the movie has a strong personality carried by the music. It's a great movie, but it could be better.
