As others have already said, the film loses major points for unrealistic lapses, such as modern/PC casting. Yeah, we know that an unmarried white woman with a kid can live with a black man. But in those days, the entire town would have been up in arms, and not just accepting it. White woman goes to jail and leaves her daughter with the black man she's living with? Sure, no problem. No one in town says a word. Unrealistic.
Same with the black judge...simply didn't happen in 1910s England. A female Indian police officer too?
But now for the real issue: Rose is a vile character who nobody wants to root for. Gutter language, illegitimate daughter who she lies about, no job, no money, no effort to correct anything. Edith may not be a prize herself, but at least she has an excuse, having been forced to be a spinster by her domineering father. You start to realize that Rose has zero redeeming qualities, and you actually like the fact that she's being framed.
Speaking of laughably unrealistic and a horrible job by the writer/director, there is no reason given why all of Edith's friends become traitors and turn on her. She's known her whist friends for years and by all accounts, they are best friends. But then some new harlot comes to town, and all at once they suddenly turn on Edith and help entrap her, in favor of a loud-mouth ill-behaved stranger? No, not for me. I was dying for Edith to get away with it and have the bigmouth go to jail.
