Afflicted (2013)
One of the better "found footage" films
Well done "found footage" film. Mostly bored by the found footage films, but this is well done. Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity (first) are the standard. This ranks up there with these. These should have stopped after the first but we know Hollywood.
Possible Spoilers: Great script and follow thru. I felt we really got a chance to care for the characters and get involved with the characters and their plight. Normally when the characters continue "filming" after the crap hits the fan I'm thinking, "drop the camera and bail!" But Derek's wanting to pay homage to his friend (the video junkie) allowed me to over look this.
When I saw the bite on Derek's shoulder I thought, "vampire!" My only problem was how quickly he was able to track his "turner" down. Other than this, kudos!
Well executed for a low budget film. Decent special effects and storyline, Just pray they do NOT do a part 2 but I would like to see more from these two.
Giallo (2009)
92 Minutes Out Of My Life I Can't Get Back
I won't bother with a plot summary since it has been done before.
Bad writing! Bad chemistry! Did not care for any of the characters! So-so beginning, crappy middle, AND crappy ending!
WTF was Adrian Brody thinking?! I guess he got a few good articles of clothing (shoes, suits, etc.) judging by the end credits. But, seriously, did he even read the script before he agreed to this drek?! And, are there any idiots out there who did not know that Adrian was playing a dual role as the killer and the FBI agent? Kind of hard to camouflage that nose! He is not credited as the killer but COME ON!
I feel I should receive a check just for sticking out to the end of this crapola!
I demand reparations!
Little Girl K (2011)
Korean Version of La Femme Nikita
Pretty good Korean version of La Femme Nikita. It has the same basic plot line. A girl is presumed dead and given a choice: Work for secret government agency as an assassin or you're dead anyway.
It's a 3 part mini-series centered around the heroine Cha Yeon Jin seeking to avenge the murder of her mother by the hands of a religious fanatic.
Her mother escapes with Cha Yeon Jin (an infant at the time) from a secret government facility with the help of the officer who ran it after he has an attack of conscious.
After 15 years on the run she is found and kidnapped when her daughter witnesses a crime with her friends. The mother is killed in front of Cha Yeon Jin and she is gunned down and left for dead.
The secret government agency nurses Cha Yeon Jin back to health and recruits her as an assassin. She agrees as long as she is allowed to go after the man who killed her mother.
Lots of nudity and violence and just enough differences to make it a interesting show.
If you don't mind reading subtitles it's worth a viewing.
New Amsterdam (2008)
Rehash of Highlander
Once again one of the major networks has taken an original idea (either from cable, from over seas, or from an earlier syndicated show) and rehashed it as a "new" series. "New Amsterdam" is basically "The Highlander" without the sword play and euro-babes.
The lead character is essentially an immortal who was given the gift of immortality by a tribe of native Americans he tried to save from a massacre in the 17th century. He has one caveat to his immortality. When he finds the love of his life he will become mortal and be able to die. It's not clear whether he will drop dead on the spot when he finds her. While chasing a perp, he sees a woman coming off a subway train and has a heart attack and "dies" only to be resurrected again in the morgue. So it seems that this woman (a doctor who tried to save him on the subway platform) will eventually become his love interest on the show.
As in "The Highlander" the show features numerous flashbacks to the lead characters past few centuries on earth. He also runs into people who knew him decades earlier ("don't I know you?")
He also has a sidekick named Omar who knows his secret and gives him advice. Omar is the lead character's Joe Dawson (Duncan's watcher/mentor on "The Highlander".)
In the preview to the next episode they do a tongue-in-cheek reference to "The Highlander." A little boy asks the lead character what would happen if his head was cut off (which is the only way the immortals on "The Highlander" can be killed.) He pauses and says something to the effect of "that has never happened."
Will I watch the show? Probably, as I don't have cable, the only alternatives on Tuesday are "Big Brother", "The Biggest Loser", "According to Jim", and PBS. So unless they move it to another night I will probably watch it.
Hmmm! They seem to have moved the show to Thursdays at 8:00 (central) up against "Lost" and "CSI." Who is the brain trust that decided on this schedule? If they really want to give this show a chance, they should find a more friendly time slot. They basically have pitted a rehashed sci-fi/fantasy show against two already established sci-fi (yes, I really consider CSI sci-fi) juggernauts. The Tuesday time slot would work better for this show. It would be up against 2 reality shows and a lame sit-com. I'm just saying.
