Asteroid (2021)
The End Of The World Never Looked So Good
I feel a lot of viewers miss the point of this movie. That's why some of the reviews are negative. The story in Asteroid is told in a very tongue-in-cheek manner, and anyone thinking otherwise is glossing over the countless "serious" - "repetitive" and dare I say, often "boring" Hollywood end-of-the-world movies, where asteroids and other other worldly forces are at work, for some odd reason seemingly bent on destroying mankind. This movie isn't one of those. Just like all the other end-of-the-world movies, this one is a cliche festival, but it never hides that fact, it builds upon it, and I feel the writer and director did an excellent job at doing this. The story makes an abrupt U-turn early on, and never looks back. It takes us to now familiar territory (because isn't there at least three end-of-the-world movies produced every year these days?) - but it does so with a new voice - a fresh voice - a voice that teases perhaps a different conclusion is possible this time around. Asteroid has something for everyone. Although it lacks the actual science to back up the science in the story, there is the sci-fi element. The dysfunctional family element is fun and recognizable, as well. And, while telling its story, Asteroid also manages to put a small town like Oneonta, New York, on the map.
Faraway (2023)
An exotic twist on a familiar theme?
After reading other reviews of this movie, I was intrigued enough to want to watch it for myself. Yes, the movie is a little formulaic, as other reviewers have pointed out, but the vast majority of movies out there are formulaic in one way or another. - at least to me they are, so that wasn't a deal breaker for me. Faraway is indeed a story we've all seen and heard before, but it is offered to us with an exotic twist - a welcome and fascinating twist. Set partly in Croatia, the rustic scenery is inviting and alluring, and the two main characters, Zeyrep and Josip have genuine chemistry. This movie did not disappoint.
Death Camp (2022)
Watch this movie before you make your next weekend getaway
A group of arrogant kids decide to visit an abandoned camp with a dark past. What could go wrong, right? Everything, it seems. One by one they uncover little secrets, as if they even needed these clues to warn them about what may have been about to happen. This was a fun movie, and anyone who likes these kinds of stories will not be disappointed. The movie had just the right blend of elements you would associate with a movie of this type - witchcraft, a conjuring, a desolate countryside and characters straight out of our worst nightmares. This movie had everything one would want to see in a creepy film.
