The Orville: Lasting Impressions (2019)
Season 2, Episode 11
4/10
Gordon acting like a 12 year old again
30 August 2022
This episode is held up by the Bortus plotline, everything else is teenage drivel and relationship / soap opera fluff that we've seen a little bit too much in season 2 already.

If this show takes Star Trek as an inspiration, then write more interesting dilemma's instead of soapy episodes.

Disappointing.

Overstays its welcome
10 July 2022
This should have had a 1.5 hour runtime to cut all the needless repeat and retreading and it would have been a possible 8/10.

Now, be prepared to get bored halfway through it and waiting for the final act to conclude its message.

Missed opportunity.

Fan service with a mess of a script
12 March 2022
Throw every character related to Spiderman in a movie, have them fight for 2 hours, thats this movie in a nutshell. Recommended if you like pretty colors.

All hype, but little substance
25 March 2021
The movie follows the literal exact same plot as the Marvel movies do, some evil guy comes to destoy the world, get a team together to stop him. Predictable as it can get. Perhaps they can do something with the dialogue? Mostly falls flat as well.

This gets a 6 because at least it has a coherent story to go along with it, which is rare these days.

Leave your brain at the door material

Visual Garbage
8 February 2021
A movie should start with a coherent script containing characters you care about, motivations, a setting, a setup and a pay off.

This thing is visual garbage, pretty pictures without substance.

Generic
14 August 2020
Generic screenplay, generic characters, generic everything. I was just bored looking at this, with the exception of maybe a couple of scenes where they managed to effectively use the superpower and the setting.

This tjj g already bored me 5 minutes in. If you don't care to setup your movie properly, you know with characters and a plot. What am I even watching? Such poor screenplay writing. Don't bother

Entertaining, but don't expect realism
12 April 2020
I see many reviews of this show expecting realistic plots across the 8 seasons of this show. It's never really meant to be realistic if we see what the protagonist is able to get away with each season, that would obviously never be possible in real life.

Recommended to watch only if you can suspend disbelief and don't take it seriously.

Environmentalist propaganda
7 January 2020
The movie starts with an interesting premise to explore, but instead heads about a hour in towards political messaging and environmental propaganda.

Star Wars: The Rise of Plot Convenience
24 December 2019
This is a theme park ride, lets get that out of the way first.

Nothing in this movie happens without plot convenience thrown in to make sure a set piece can be resolved in 5 minutes.

Plot and logic does not play a role in this movie it's about the SFX and as much of it you can cram in there that the audience is confused with it they'll forget all the plot points anyway.

This movie is really an expression of everything that went wrong with the new trilogy ignoring everything the original trilogy set out:

  • There's no unifying vision
  • Directors get free reign to do what they want
  • SFX is the most important aspect, not storytelling and characters.

This is what you get, a bundle of SFX mess. Wait for a digital download and don't reward Disney with your money in the theaters.

Thescript is a mess
15 September 2019
It's a very messy script, likely the reason for tihs is that Tarantino expects its audience to know the time period. The movies, the actors that played them at the time etc. etc. For most, including myself, I dont think that's the case and it results in a script that is hard to follow, doesnt have a clear narrative, and characters are all over the place without much character growth. The good? The acting, and production are top notch with an equal cast. It's just not enough to warrant this a good rating (8).

With every season it declines
6 July 2019
Season 1 was great, the setting , the themes, it all worked very well. Season 2 was on a repeat of season 1 and already left a bit of a sour taste Season 3 starts off quit well but turns into a mess, no interesting dialogue, the plot is lackluster, comedy and romance that detracts. If the trend continues season 4 will be a massive disappointment in the making.

Here's hoping they can turn it around!

Alita "fails to impress" Angel
1 July 2019
Missed opportunity are the 2 words that come to mind after just having watched this.

The setting and production quality are top notch, but it fails to impress on every other level which makes this movie ultimately a bland and average experience.

The sequel bait at the end really puts a nail in the coffin and makes it drop to a below average rating of 4 out of 10.

Not recommended.

JFK (1991)
8/10
Excellent cinematography and raising good questions!
24 July 2018
I see quite a few reviews here handing out 1 out of 10s dismissing the JFK narrative as "conspiracy nut theories". The film actually raises a lot of valid questions, even though there are also factual errors. It should not be entirely regarded as a documentary when its also made to entertain and to exagerate and create fiction to make a point.

In general people are not easily persuaded to believe their government would be capable of such horrific acts and consequently are then dismissed as nut cases. That's of course exactly the point to label anyone questioning the official narrative when you have something to hide. I think JFK succeeds in displaying that particular side of the JFK narrative, regardless if the facts presented are actually factual.

Anyone should be well aware when your government tries to shut down a narrative, that means someone is on to something that is an inconvenience.

Well done movie and definitely worth a watch!

A doomed franchise
20 January 2018
The previous installment left me with a bitter taste and I came into this movie hoping they could redeem it by doing something interesting with the newly established characters. Without going into spoilers, they've basically ruined any chance for good character development to take place and the focus has shifted instead to mindless action scenes without much cohesion and plot to support it.

The added "humor", cute animals, and a Chinese supporting character are a clear sign Disney is looking to expand its demographic with The Last Jedi and it doesn't much care about plot continuation and tying up those loose ends that were established in Episode 7.

Disney's disregard for the source material, a lackluster plot, pointless dialogue, and the meddling of "corporate" to please a big audience, has ensured this franchise to its doom.

For those that leave their brains at home.
2 July 2017
Did they forget to ad an interesting plot to this film, character development? some sense of suspense? pacing? interesting dialog?

What is this movie other than a DC comic book character turned to a film?

I'm baffled what goes on for entertainment these days in the cinema, but this is another line of terrible that I've come to expect from Hollywood.

Perhaps this is the decade of the television series where creativity and good stories get the proper attention and cinema is for those that want to leave their brains at home.

Avoid

Corporate product
12 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a result from corporate decision making based on marketing data. You take everything that has been known to work in this franchise and you mash it in a single installment. Make sure you have an opening for a sequel in there for cash flow continuity!

Where's creativity? where's the story? where is the plot? It's a typical Hollywood by the numbers movie production that we see all the time these days. Your DC movies, your marvel movies etc. etc. It's all by the numbers. Hence a by the numbers score of a 6. It's so very average without a standout anywhere.

Gomorrah (2014–2021)

Gritty, realistic, but lacks drama
5 March 2017
On a plane ride back home I started watching episode 1 season 1, binge watched the whole first season and some of the second. It definitely manages to capture the realistic sense of the mob, but I felt the show was lacking in some major area's. Characters that you root for! There's not a single character in this show that I would root for, they're all equally terrible human beings. The second thing is, drama, you need on occasion to step out of reality and into some fiction to make a compelling show with more interesting and developed characters. During the first season, one after the other gets eliminated and that makes for thin viewing when it comes to character development. Mostly following the top 3 of the Savastano clan and the rest getting served scraps. This is what makes The Sopranos for instance work so much better, the dialogue, the character development and the writing is much stronger to great a more compelling season after season narrative. This is what Gomorrah lacks to be really outstanding. Still, worth a watch for crime drama fans!
