The Third Party (2016)
Light, Romantic, Beautiful
It's hardly an award winning movie, but it was fun to watch, had several sweet moments and all the typical moments of a PG-13 gay romcom. Probably a little longer than it needed to be - but that just gave more camera time to the handsome male leads. Subtitles made it much harder to finish the dishes!
Za granyu realnosti (2018)
Worth Every Ruble Spent
Lot's of action, great graphics. But something seemed "off" with this film. Editing was creative but sloppy. No eye for continuity. And the plot was twisted, but not in a good way. Like others have said, felt like a strange (maybe poor) copy of other popular films. So U had to see what was up, why this film felt like it was from the "upside down".
Two interesting things helped me understand. First, the film was originally in Russian, shot in Russia, and created by Russians. But I watched it in English. If you weren't paying attention, thanks to careful dubbing and lip manipulation, you might not have noticed it was dubbed. And the voice talent was also Russian, providing a strange, clean, Berlitz sounding VO. Secondly, this film was (reportedly) made for US$5M. Let's note that again - FIVE MILLION. Most movies these days with this level of graphics cost over $100M, with many approaching or surpassing $200M. I've made 30sec TV commercials that cost more than this entire movie! If there was one thing to learn by this is that the democratization of technology has put many other countries in direct competition with Hollywood. Heck, they even have Antonio Banderas in this movie.
If you watch this film, I'm guessing it's better in Russian with subtitles.
