Falimy (2023)
Outstanding
Short of words to describe this movie but let me attempt-
Pros:-
1) A simple story brilliantly told
2) Basil Joseph stamp of quality
3) Extremely powerful performances, led by Jagdish as never before. Among others, the tea seller kid with a 2 minute role was very funny. I rewinded his scenes ..
4) Almost pan Indian so that north Indian viewers can also watch
5) Comedy sequences - the DDLJ inspired train scene was a scream
6) Excellent cinematography
Cons:
1) Takes time to get going..I had initially switched off after the first 10 minutes, but went back to resume just by chance
2) Name confuses Google, for reading reviews I kept getting another movie called Family starring Vinay Fort
3) Would have been fun to have another 5 minutes for closure..eg. The younger brother settling scores, Jagdish and son reconciliation in particular
To summarise, this is good cinema and can be watched with family..
Animal (2023)
K3G gone rogue
Watching this movie was a marathon session, half a day almost gone from the time we left home, watched the movie nearby and came home.. The basic premise is from K3G, where papa and son have a problem .. However in the older movie they solved problems diplomatically and weeping inconsolably, while here it's done with guns and knives..There's also a (cousin) brother who plays an evil contrast to the kind hearted sissy in the original version.
The movie belongs to Ranbir Kapoor.. Here's someone who looks good, and acts extremely well. The BGM, and massy template is excellent.. The post credit scene alone is worth half the price of the ticket..Overall, great entertainment ..
Corona Dhavan (2023)
Very Funny
Saw this movie recently at home..A gem of a movie, taking a comic route to highlight the pain which many of us went through when realisation struck too late, that liquor shops in India would also be closed as part of the lockdown.. Lukman is extremely versatile and seems to be the dark horse who will prevail over Malayalam cinema in the years to come..Srinath Bhasi as the eccentric gangster is a revelation, his dance scene to cope with the drought was hilarious. Add Jony Antony into the mayhem and we have a role coaster ride of a funny movie. Hope film makers give us these kind of movies to help get our money's worth for OTT subscriptions.
Jaadugar (2022)
A punctured football..
Begins well but to draw an analogy here, the football starts losing air after some time and refuses to roll well. Many from the supporting cast including Javed Jaffri, the first girlfriend, the punk, and the goalkeeper grab your attention more than the lead, Jitendra Kumar.. he keeps repeating expressions and voice modulation from his earlier movies and that's not done.. The football scenes are well shot and some of the comedy scenes are a scream.. the songs were a pain..Overall, average..
Veyil (2022)
Sunny and dark
Kudos to the team that put this together with a largely unknown cast (to me at least) excluding Shane Nigam and Shine.. Somewhere this drama successfully evoked the sentiments of the Hindi classic 'Deewar', where two brothers and their mother struggle to find their bearings in a cruel world. Hats off to Shane Nigam whose chocolate looks would have been a bonus in Bollywood but never a plus point in Malayalam movies.. He lives the character, effortlessly switches emotions and anchors the movie, well supported by the others..
Meppadiyan (2022)
99 good things and 1 bad..
Classic example of how the elephant's tail got stuck.. Like finding a hair in your food at the end of a sumptuous meal.. The ending just didn't make the cut. To give credit where it's due, Outstanding performances by the cast and an interesting narrative .. And my non malayali friends who watched this movie couldn't stop gushing about Unni Mukundan's looks and deadly screen presence. I'm seriously contemplating growing my hair and beard and switching to a white mundu..7/10.
Prathi Poovankozhi (2019)
Starts off nicely but..
A good story, terrific lead actress, light start, well set in second gear and ready to cruise.. And then the slide happens and everything goes down hill.. Felt half baked and unfulfilling..
Bheemante Vazhi (2021)
Almost a classic
In recent times it's been a blessing to watch Malayalam movies and this one is another feather in a crowded cap.. For me it adds one more idol to the long lineup of Malayalam stars that I Iove to watch.. Welcome, Jinu Joseph.. Full credit to the director for unraveling a complex story without wearing down the viewer.. The final punch was well delivered.
Kaaval (2021)
Please remake it
This was a great story idea but destroyed through unimaginative direction.. I'm willing to put my money on it again, if they remake it retaining SG, and the bad cop and change every other actor and props like the Diwali toy gun of the hero. 5 stars for SG and a couple of goosebump scenes like the ones in the money lender's office and the one towards the end in the hospital.
Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea (2021)
Stick to Mamooty pls
Historical extravaganzas in Malayalam are complex sagas.. Only one man had been able to do justice to this genre and it would be wise to stick to him next time, if it's not too late.. And by the way some of the characters in the story seemed to have watched Deewar and Sholay before it released.. There were 2 immortal dialogues from these movies cut and pasted here..
Churuli (2021)
Learnt proper Malayalam
My ego took a severe beating after the bridge crossing scene when the colourful language started.. Never in my interactions with the lowest class have I heard such variety.. Hopefully I'll never have to use this language since it would guarantee some broken bones or jail..
Aadya Rathri (2019)
Full Timepass
No dull moments and some random scenes can be forwarded without missing anything.. The last 30 seconds has the best punchline ever seen in Malayalam movies.. Extra points for that closing scene.
Kilometers and Kilometers (2020)
Bullet stuck in 2nd gear
Just couldn't up the game, and it was stuck in 2nd gear throughout.. Clearly lacked the punch that is a hallmark of most Tovino movies..And by the way, did I clearly see the drone shadow in one of the songs at around 01:29?
Kappela (2020)
Anti Corona
Since it was raining in Mumbai yesterday I sat at home and watched this movie with nil expectations with 3 key characters I wouldn't give a second look and couldn't believe my eyes as the movie entered the last lap. Make such movies and a whole lot of people will stay at home instead of gallivanting aimlessly on the roads during the pandemic. This is among my top 3 of the 50 odd Malayalam movies I watched from March 2020.. Like Innocent said..inikye ishtayee ta.. Hats of to the 3 leads, and the supporting cast..
