Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
Deserves The Top 100 Of All Time
This movie, which I am still watching the final credits for after having rented it today, deserves not only to be in the top 250 but, quite frankly, the top 100 (and I can only pray it gets the necessary volume of votes to do so, because at 7.9 that's already saying something). It is movies like this that keep me in love with television and, truth be told, with living life itself...to the fullest...and that's just what this movie is about. Often times before a movie has stirred me to my very core in some way, shape or form (Adaptation, Cinderella Man, Thank You For Smoking, 300, Vanilla Sky, Meet Joe Black, Requiem For A Dream, Cradle Will Rock, Amistad, Magnolia, heck even Ferris Bueller's Day Off...and the list goes well on) but in all my days on this earth, loving movies more than any material thing yet known, a WILL FERRELL movie turned that greatest of tricks. Stranger Than Fiction just helped me reinvest myself in living my life, contributing to the world, being a better person and...loving movies more than I already did.
The Lost Room (2006)
Best Television Program In Years
This is arguably the best TV program I may have ever seen (and like many Americans born in the 70s and raised in the 80s and 90s I've seen more TV, I swear to God, than virtually anyone alive...I kid you not). Ironic too that Peter Krause should be a part of it, given that he was the featured character in what is also widely considered to be the greatest drama to ever air (Six Feet Under on HBO). Do yourself a favor and immerse your mind in this 3-part miniseries (each part 2hrs long) and you'll never, ever regret it. The best 6hrs of television you can spend, short of those amazing new fetal camera shows from National Geographic (the dog, the dolphin and the elephant, also great shows that aired last week alongside The Lost Room from Sci-Fi). This competes with "V" from the mid-80s for most captivating miniseries ever.
V for Vendetta (2005)
Best Movie in 25 Years
I thought this is what movies were all about? They should possess excellent entertainment value (nowadays including special effects) but more importantly, perhaps MOST importantly, a message...a connection...a shared value. V for Vendetta won't seem or feel or sound or play like the greatest movie ever but do any of the very best movies? No, they merge with you in timely harmony; seep in like wine over time into the walls of an oak barrel. Best movie in 25yrs, quietly, subtly, almost surprisingly...the way it should be. Were the fireworks over the top? Maybe, but it was so good overall (even the Chief Inspector, a role player in the truest sense, was incredible and believable). Just see it, and understand. Humanity is all we really have in this physical universe, and any movie that connects us and reaches through the screen to enter our soul deserves a place in the top 250 and plenty of other movies there have no business, we all know it. I hope V for Vendetta claws its way into the top 50 where it inevitably belongs.
Marty (1955)
Most Honest Characters You've Ever Seen?
That's a fine way of putting it actually, I voted this movie the rare 10 simply because, like any "10" there was really nothing wrong with it. The honest, secret, inner connection I felt as a human being gave it that extra 1 or 2 pts (since it's easily a vote of "8" at minimum).
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988)
Perfectly Said "As Good As Movies Get" Yes
There is nothing more to say than that, this movie is simply as good as a movie can get (but of course remember this...there are MANY ways to "get" there and Cinema Paridiso is just one of them). You can go this route, Rain Man, LOTR (eh) or near-infinite other routes so please don't be afraid to give this movie a vote of "10" here, trust me.
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002)
Don't Underrate This Movie
This movie is far, far better than what some people are voting and/or commenting on. I can't see in one bit how this movie "tries way too hard" and I think some ppl on imdb.com are getting a bit too big for their britches just because we're all supposed to be "movie buffs" that are never wrong. I guard against such hubris, I admitted it took me (albeit for the first time ever) two viewings of Mulholland Drive to "get it" but rating this movie anything less than 9 or 10 is almost a shame (or at worst, 8) because it was exactly what I hope for out of a noted movie that takes me months to finally rent and see...which is a complete and total [pleasant] surprise! Didn't ANYone of you fellow "movie experts" feel that same way about Confessions of a Dangerous Mind? I thought that for the most part, there was absolutely nothing wrong w/this movie from top to bottom, start to finish and front to back (that, therefore, makes a movie excellent by anyone's standards). I know just as much as anyone else registered here (and for many years now I might add) and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was simply a great movie, exactly what I hope for when I finally get around to seeing something on my "to watch" list. NOT a letdown or overtly flawed in any real way. If I had three thumbs, they'd all be up for this movie.
Ghosts of Mars (2001)
Who Gives This Movie A "10" With Clear Conscience???
C'mon, I love movies too but this is going too far. Fault me for giving my favorite movies a "10" like Papillion or Rain Man but this is (quite literally) unforgivable. I think Natasha Henstridge is beyond fine (her hair is perfect) but let's be realistic...this movie was pretty bad, the best part clearly being the gratuitous flash of Henstridge towards the very end of the movie putting her clothes back on after waking up.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
I Almost Gave It A Nine (9)...
...but gave it a 10 because the stunning visuals (and I don't just mean "FX" I mean actual retinal intake at the utter aesthetic level) made up for the tiny bit of creeping out I got from looking directly into Elijah Wood's face all movie (not kidding). Short of that, I am almost excited and giddy such a new movie has climbed to #4 all time (on IMDb at least) but frankly it earned it. Any movie almost as good as Rain Man (but in polar-opposite ways) deserves to be #4...(I too loved Godfather and especially The Shawshank Redemption, but Rain Man is arguably the greatest film ever for many, vastly different reasons). I digress, no one should miss Lord of the Rings and I'm just glad I caught it at the Blue Ridge in Raleigh 8mos after it premiered (seeing this for the 1st time on video/at home would have been my loss).
Door to Door (2002)
Macy Just Keeps Getting More & More...
...impressive in Door to Door. Recently, I have been very (very) impressed w/Mr. Macy's acting, including the off-budget movie about being a professional hit man w/Neve Campbell (not to mention Fargo). This movie seals the deal, William H. Macy did more than just act in the lead role of Door to Door mind you. This movie is one of very few TV movies to earn a serious & solid "10" (so good is it). I can't believe how plain, honest and real this movie is (shooting, writing & especially acting). A MUST SEE!
Amongst Friends (1993)
This Low Rating Is Proof No One Pays Attention...
This movie is outstanding, every time I see it I realize it's power & scope are far beyond what the average voter must be able to see & comprehend. This movie is very highly recommended to all of you who are smart enough to scour & review imdb.com since I always assumed that only true movie fans came to this site. a rating less than 7.0 for this movie is shameful, simply tragic...WATCH THIS MOVIE!
Arlington Road (1999)
The Ending WAS Incredible
Enough said, truly one of the very best endings in perhaps all of Hollywood (history). I understand this has been heavily debated since the movie came out (it's now 5/01 as I write this) but it was simply terrific, (the ending). The middle was a bit uncomfortable (the acting seemed forced) but overall, the ending was worth the time!
