Radius (2017)
Great concept, poor execution.
Obviously, the really interesting and seemingly original concept is what brought many of us here. The problem is, the execution and writing for this film seemed very amateur-ish. The whole time I was watching this, I just thought "wow, this concept is really cool, but this is really boring."
The acting leaves much to be desired, the dialogue as well. They did fine with a limited budget, but there are many other low budgeted films that are much better, so you can't blame it on that. An example of another film that has a neat concept but poor execution is "The Room" not the Tommy Wiseau one, but the 2019 one.
It is quite a shame that it wasn't made and written by more competent directors, or else it would have been a really interesting film.
Devil (2010)
Exciting trailer, disappointing execution.
I saw the trailer and thought that this concept was really interesting. The reviews were quite mixed, so I just decided to watch it. After watching it, my opinion of it is mixed too. There are some parts I really like.
I like that it manages to be a fairly entertaining movie with a limited locations. The cinematography and the concept are pretty interesting. Those are the things I liked.
Here are the things I don't like.
1. The acting. I don't know if it was the director's fault or if the actors are just incompetent, but I found it very hard to believe that they were real people when they were delivering their lines. I found Logan Marshall and Bojana Novakovic good, the security guards too. Other than those two, everyone was so comical. I couldn't believe them, and even laughed at some parts because it was so bad.
2. The music. You know what makes a scene tense? NO MUSIC. Every 20 minutes, the director decides to cut to a scene of just buildings with loud, cliché violins AND brass. Scenes of just people doing things had music too. That doesn't make it tense, it just makes it distracting. I'm trying to focus the situation while violins and trumpets are blaring.
3. The writing. First off, the ending was wack, and it definitely brought my rating a star down. There was a scene where someone uses a pb & j sandwich falling the wrong way as proof of something. What?? It made me laugh. It has all this build up in this lift, for it all to just fall flat on it's face. Dissapointing.
Anyways, watch it if you wanna I guess. I thought the conclusion was dumb.
Dorohedoro (2020)
Weird as hell, and that's what makes it great.
Dorohedoro can't really be describe in any type of way. You just have to watch it. I love how it dares to be so adventurous, and basically not really care if general audiences will like it or not, which makes it a great adaptation of the manga.
Sometimes, I feel like its very quick pacing makes it feel like someone with ADHD made this, but I also love it. It doesn't drag anything on for too long. It gets straight to the point, and the first scene of the movie tells you what you're gonna get into.
I recommend anyone who wants to try, but is hesitant, to just dive in, as the first episode will either hook you in, or you'll know if you don't like it. It's very graphic of course, so beware if you don't like blood and gore.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
Watch this if you wanna be confused and annoyed.
This film was 2 hours of me going "what???" and "why???". It was filled with characters doing stupid things that make you annoyed. You're supposed to like and feel sympathy for the main character, but this film just makes you hate them because of the brain-dead decisions they make. In conclusion, don't waste your time on this boring nonsense. Even James McAvoy wasn't trying anymore.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
Super boring, 2 different movies in 2 super long hours.
I new it was gonna be bad, but not this bad. This film was so boring, featuring a bunch of action, explosions, and CGI that just turns into a blur after 5 minutes. And that's coming from someone who mostly enjoys schlock and sci-fi fantasy films. This just featured 2 different plots that they don't make interesting, and characters you couldn't care less about because they didn't develop them. The 2 main characters had a relationship that didn't feel real at all, and the 2nd plot was straight up stupid and non-sensical. TLDR, this film is a bore that made me wanna leave 1/3 in the film.
Gong fu guan lan (2008)
Just really fun and entertaining!
Technically, it may not be on par with films that deserve a 7 star rating, but it sure is entertaining. Its iconic original soundtrack by Jay Chou, paired with fun and entertaining kung fu and basketball scenes makes this an iconic gem in many asian millenial and gen-zs lives.
Birdemic: Shock and Terror (2010)
Horrendous, but hilarious.
This "film" is an utter piece of crap. It is however, a very entertaining piece of crap that you can laugh at with your friends, which is why I added 2 stars for its entertainment value. This is a hallmark in the history of cinema, and shall be regarded as one of The Best of The Worst.
Underwater (2020)
It did what it wanted, and had to do.
I found this film to be a fine, well-made film. The tone and mood for the film was established right at the beginning, and was consistent. The action and danger for the characters started right away wasting no time, which I liked. There were quite a few cliches, and predictable things that happened, which took me out of the film a bit, but didn't completely wash away my enjoyment of the film.
The plot-twists that I guess were supposed to make me go WHAAT??? or WOAH didn't really make me do that, so the climax was a bit anti-climatic. I did like the characters, and enjoy their interactions though. I liked the ending too, although some people I know disagree. All around, this film was enjoyable for me, and good enough to spend 1 and a half hours.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Knows what it wants to do, and does it very well.
The tone and mood that this movie sets, and is able to maintain is phenomenal. It felt like the director knew exactly what he wanted, and when he wanted it. The acting was my favourite part of the film, as Robert Pattinson and William Dafoe gave one of the best performances I have seen in film to date. Unfortunately, they have been snubbed like Toni Collette and Lupita Nyong'o, as horror, or even horror/psychological-type films, will not be recognized by The Academy, which is just a joke at this point.
Personally, the very slow pacing and use of repetitiveness to tell the story worked well, but honestly was not really my cup of tea.
As someone who has started getting more and more into movies and analyzing them, this was a work of art that would obviously not suit general audiences, but will definitely be appreciated by film lovers.
Tayna pechati drakona (2019)
Please don't waste your time on this.
I genuinely went into this film with an open mind, and the film ended with my whole family and I feeling scammed. Including my 12 year old sister who apologized for making us watch this film, no joke. Jackie Chan and Arnold, both whom I like and respect, are in this film for 10 seconds. Clearly just a cash grab. Their "fight scene" was boring, and 99% of the film is focused on bland characters with bad english dubbing. Don't waste your time. Watch a youtube clip if you wanna see Arnold and Jackie "fight"
