Aftersun (2022)
Aftersun hits you like an earthquake
A good movie is entertaining and/or exciting and makes spectators think, or wonder, or smile, or cry, or laugh, or jealous, or even angry. Aftersun does all of the above and makes it a perfect movie.
The story looks quite simple and superficial: a father and his 11 year old daughter go to Turkey for a holiday together. But whereas in other movies playing with the chronology often has no added value, in Aftersun the director uses this to give the movie more layers. The end of the movie is heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. The last shot is pure art.
This was the first movie in my life that i saw in the cinema for the second time within a week. The first time Aftersun hit me like a not predicted earthquake. After seeing an interview with director Charlotte Wells where she explained the meaning of certain specific scenes i went for a second viewing. Aftersun hit me hard again, this time like a predicted earthquake.
Everything about Aftersun is right: the setting, the acting, the dialogues, the music score (Under Pressure !), and above all the cinematography. About the acting: the interaction between the father (Paul Mescal) and the daughter (Frankie Corio) is so natural that as a spectator you're not sitting in a cinema watching a movie but you feel more like a vacationer staying in the same Turkish hotel as they do. Frankie Corio by the way is a real talent. All in all is Aftersun one of the best movies i ever saw.
