Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
I've never had to turn off a movie before.
How do I state how bad this movie is without sounding redundant, basically it seems like Zack Snyder can't figure out how to collaborate with others and can not take constructive criticism. This was some of the laziest writing and directing I have ever seen and hearing talk of a directors cut? Like why? It's going to be just as bad.
Now I don't want to write an all negative review so some perks of this movie were 1. The cast. It's really hard to mess up a movie with such a strong group of actors but yet here we are. I loved the whole group I had high hopes.
And 2.
Most of the costume and world design was great, a little too derivative of other things (Star Wars and Warhammer 40k) but I loved to see the costumes and the makeup, it was a lot of fun.
Now unfortunately the bad...
The special effects, like first of all are the weapons laser blasters or do they have bullets? Cause they shoot like lasers but some how have gun powder and hammers on the ends of the guns like? Who designed these? Also the lighting.. there is this wonderful opening scene where the lead is in a big field with this beautiful back drop but the whole scene legit feels like you're watching it on a stage. It had 0 depth to it, like many aspects of this film it just fell flat.
The story, now I need to know what happened to someone that they had to incorporate several creepy non consensual sexual situations? Like the first one at the farm felt like we spent way too much time on and the one with the pig dude at the bar is where I had to shut it off and walk away. I have read several other reviews that ask the same question I did, did AI right this? I mean unless a goldfish wrote this, how could a seasoned writer lose the point of the plot and so many sub plots as well as go on tangents that make no sense and do not tie into the story. Also last thought, but who the hell shoots a slow motion scene where there is no action? I wanted to like it I truly did but this is a total dud. Save yourself the time and the confusion and watch something else.
Twisted Metal (2023)
Unexpected Gem
Started this show with the idea that it would be a big bright colorful background noise. I was pleasantly surprised. I was very well aware of the game growing up but not being a PlayStation owner I didn't have much excitement for this show as I wouldn't have the slightest clue for what was happening. Listen if you've got a few days (or hours if you're a binge freak) and want something fun this is your show. If you take things too serious than look the other way.
Positives: Great characters. Great pace. A few good laughs. 2000's Nostalgia music
Negatives: a few minor plot holes that make you scratch your head.
Secret Invasion (2023)
It had the potential
Let me start out on a positive. I loved that we got a look at Nick Fury a little more in depth but this was more a Nick Fury show than anything most of us hoped for a secret invasion show.
The characters were great and it could have been much better but these shows feel rushed. The studios really need to go back to the drawing board and understand that what has made the MCU fun is focusing on the heros. The amount of content Marvel has produced in the infinity war saga was almost the same amount they've produced so far in their multiverse saga. They need to focus on the stores. Quality over quantity
Overall the show is a fun addition but a boring one. Nothing picks up until the finale and it's a lackluster climax that fizzles out faster than it started. The writes are not to blame for the burnt out tone of the show but Disney and marvel need to understand their success in the past was their restraint to over do it.
Glass Onion (2022)
Not just on the surface.
I loved this movie! Although there were some parts I would have like a little more clarification on ( A tad bit more character development) but, overall Mr. Johnson knows what he's doing.
I watched this movie twice. Once solo and once with someone. I caught more the second time around. The movie is called Glass Onion, the metaphor was referenced in the movie as something that has complexity but you can see it to its core. Meaning it's hiding something in plain sight. We should know it's not going to be the large mystery the first one would be. The whole point of this movie is to really show how dumb we've become to the obvious as it sits in front of us.
The way we see the story up to a certain point and then seeing how it was turned on it's head was fun and a unique way to make it feel like a mystery. We think it's going one way but there's a twist.
The best part was seeing Blanc put it all together and for him to even realize how ridiculous it was and how upset he was that it was just so stupidly done by a man people view as a genius. It has a lot of references to the billionaires and corruption in the world we live in and unfortunately that can go over people's heads. Movies are not about what we see on the surface, but what it means deep down. And for this movie that depth wasn't hidden. It was out in the open. The fun part was seeing how difficult it was for people to grasp it.
Overall the cast was 100, everyone gave great performances. The movie was wonderfully shot, and I loved the pace.
It's a unique movie unlike anything we have seen in a while. I highly recommend it.
Black Adam (2022)
Stuck on making the same thing
I'm glad I waited for this movie to be on streaming. Overall it was fun I will give to that, but it just seems to repeat so much of what we have already seen. It felt derivative of a early stage marvel movie and a early 2000s DC movie. Some of the characters were great. The justice society was a great way for DC to bring in new characters too. But yet again it just felt a bit of a rush and I'm excited to see where the future of DC goes with better direction now from James Gunn. Some of the story doesn't add up. The pace is all over. But overall enjoyed and would recommend to anyone with a few hours to burn.
Westworld: Generation Loss (2022)
Just wow.
This makes me so excited for the series to keep going. The last season was a bit of a slump but this season has me hooked and after this episode I can't wait for more. It has the same twists you'd expect but I'm actually excited to see where it all goes.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
You really want to like it.
Okay so I think that the marvel team has done some amazing story telling in the last several years and a character like Wanda is someone they have developed so heavily over the years. However as I understand the story they were trying to tell here but it just didn't fit well with the current Wanda story. You leave Wandavison thinking okay she's gonna be the scarlet witch but we're kinda left in the dark as to why things got so bad again for her. It's okay if you believe that the dark hold was what over came her and she wasn't thinking for herself but it just kinda jumps right into her being the villain with little to no context.
The overall flow of the movie and the direction of it all was too horror for me. Which sucks because I love horror and I love the MCU but it was Sam Rami horror and not well thought out. It was choppy and just about cheap scares.
Overall it felt too rushed. Maybe if they gave Sam more time he could have told a better story. But overall I still had a lot of fun. I still am excited to see where it all goes from here.
Dune (2021)
Almost
Although the cinematography in this movie is fantastic and the thought of the larger picture is what's happening here, this movie is so slow. It's like watching a very dull paining dry. Once the action picks up and you gain a sense of what may be happening it ends leaving the second movie to pick up where it's leaving off. Now I'm very excited to see where it goes. I am however slightly exhausting with the very slow ride. Overall still a great watch with great story telling I just wish we saw more than what we got. Sometimes too much filler isn't great.
