Because these films show children how to interact with people. Doc was nothing till Lightning did what he did and Lightning was nothing until he found Doc, although Mater was a bit of a REM or as to put it nice way a Remedial, no matter what your friends can be or what they do they will always be your best friends, So don't think of them any different.
