The Dollmaker (2017)
simple, but cohesive
Here's a classic setup: Creepy doll, grieving parents, unhealthy obsession; fun stuff. It's well-crafted and acted, with some clever effects and sharp production value. The set pieces with the kitchen and the basement are also well-dressed with some great props and attention to detail.
My only problem is that it's a bit derivative. Maybe I'm just spoiled with how many 'creepy doll' movies are out there, but I feel like I had an idea of where it was going.
All told, I'm glad I saw it! Take a look, but if you have any Raggedy Anne dolls lying around, might wanna look up a goodwill in your area.
Stucco (2019)
I'm never hanging a picture or sitting in a chair again...
This was bizarre in the most tantalizing way. It takes such a simple idea and runs with it to a point where it makes you constantly wonder where it's going, without being directionless. That's kind of rare to see in a short film.
It's definitely not for everyone, though. There are some sexual and visceral moments that I like in a movie, but I can see people being off-put. Think Cronenberg with some Kafka tossed in.
It's challenging and avant-garde. Definitely worth the time.
La Noria (2018)
A Gem! A masterclass in the art of animation!
I found this through the NOLA horror film festival. I wasn't expecting anything more than a spooky monster movie from a child's pov with some good rendering. What I got was absolutely gripping! The animation was a feast to the eyes and has heavy attention to detail. I could see myself watching this a half-dozen times and still finding more in the background. Not to mention the clever payoff at the end! Very unexpected, I say.
Worth the time, and then some. Find it on youtube and watch it asap!
