Proof (2015)
Beals makes this a must-watch for me!
Can't believe JB is still so beautiful and has become such a fine actress ... she is superb in this part. I'm agnostic, so I'm open-minded to this "afterlife" stuff. I find the story quite interesting, maybe because I've experienced the "looking down at yourself" and the "light at the end of the tunnel" personally when very young. But I didn't appreciate the "ghost" business in one episode and hope they avoid such nonsense henceforth.
I find all the characters well-played and quite realistic, which seems to evince a lot of grimaces from other reviewers. And several reviewers seem offended by JB's character's strong personality, but she seems to me very believable as a seriously intelligent and experienced surgeon who has lost a young son AND her marriage and who has a daughter in her "terrible teens." I think perhaps these reviewers might be more pleased watching "Married with Children." Beals is spot on as a no-nonsense woman who was all but forced to succumb to the odd offer from the billionaire because the enormous gift would be put to such good use and to turn down such an offer would simply defy logic, and this woman is logical to the core.
I look forward to the next episode ... just no more ghosts, please!
Red Team (1999)
Crummy flic
The biggest surprise was that there's an FBI team stationed in Winnipeg Canada. Ward was fine as usual. The leads were pathetic. A 25-yr-old kid making love to a very worn 40-ish gal agent with a terrible wig? It was embarrassing. Music was strange but at least it wasn't hip hop or rap. The main idea of a killer of serial killers was a good one. Too bad the concept was wasted on this cheap production. Great title, Red Team, should be used someday for something better. I would have given this movie a 1 instead of a 2, but I reserve 1's for pictures so bad that I walk out of them. My list of 1's isn't very long ... The Bell Jar, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and The Crying Game. Red Team was just bearable enough to last to the VERY predictable end. Save your popcorn for almost anything else - throw a dart - this pig is not worth the effort.
Salt (2010)
Jolie plays Bourne
I enjoyed this flick - it's a satisfying thriller with nonstop action, and Jolie does it proud. I would like to say that I'm surprised by all the negative reviews, all of which seem to take offense at the various "illogical" and "unrealistic" aspects of the film. These same folks no doubt LOVE films like Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean, films of the fairy tale genre with license to dismiss realism altogether. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But it is too bad they can't appreciate a fine little thriller like this that just fudges with reality a bit. Almost every James Bond film was at least as silly as this film, but I loved all them too, as did most of the world. Maybe these picky folks are just a bunch of chauvinistic men and jealous women. I say let them eat cake.
