The King of Staten Island (2020)
Pete Davidson and Judd Apatow
Tonally, this movie is all over the place, but that's what makes the film so great. You'll be belly laughing one minute and almost brought to tears the next.Pete Davidson and Judd Apatow make the perfect mixture of comedy and drama. Perfectly cast, as well. I will be telling everyone I know about this film. Easily one of the best comedy films I've seen in 10 years.
The Peanut Butter Solution (1985)
This Canadian film scarred me. Not scared, SCARRED.
I probably saw this film around the age of 6 or 7, thanks to our Canadian station CBC, channel 9 at the time. I still have stills of this film stuck in my head, at 34. The premise of the film is one thing, but the ghostly couple were/are still some of the creepiest people I've ever seen in a "kids" movie. This film deserves a proper DVD/Blu-Ray release in English. I realize it was made for Quebec, but there is a whole group of fans here in the states that want a great DVD release. This film has a very special place in my heart. It was my introduction to Horror films, which it kind of is. "There ain't no second chances..."
Losers Take All (2011)
This film NEED a physical release.
I, like most people saw this movie on Netflix. I was bored one day, this film was recommended to me. I read the description and myself, being a fan of the 80's indie post-punk scene (The Replacements, Husker Du, Dag Nasty, etc.), watched it... I LOVED IT!!! I've since seen the movie probably 5 or more times. The characters were really relate- able, they almost seemed like people I knew when I was in my late teens and early 20's. AND THE MUSIC!!! No B.S. great songs!!! Very funny moments, but not in the cheesy, slap-sticky kinda way. I can't recommend this movie high enough. If you're a fan of the mid-late 80's indie post-punk stuff and are a fan of real characters, real situations (for a band touring in a beat up van) and really great music, this film is for you!!! It's only available on digital at the moment, but maybe if enough people see this film and love it, hopefully we can get a proper special DVD/Blu-Ray edition.
9/10
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
Criminally Underrated Horror/Comedy!!!
OK, let me start out with saying the theatrical poster was a PARODY of the theatrical poster of "The Breakfast Club". That right there should've been a heads-up that this film didn't take itself very seriously. That being said this is one of the single funniest/creepiest films I've ever seen. No other film that I've seen balances that line so well. The scene in the radio station has a jump-scare that still gets me after seeing this film countless times. Chop-Top (Bill Moseley) has some of the funniest lines I've ever seen in a horror movie during this scene. Jim Siedow is great as the Cook. Dennis Hopper's performance is so over-the-top you have to realize this was done on purpose. Caroline Williams is GREAT as Stretch, the radio DJ that is being stalked by the Sawyer family after some bad timing. The climax is so intense, yet so ridiculous, it has to be seen to be believed. Seriously, if you're into campy horror films you can't just watch this film once. Tobe Hooper hit a home run with this one.
Super (2010)
"Super" was one hell of a film.
"Super" was one of those rare films that made me laugh, cry, sit on the edge of my seat and scream at the TV. I thought the whole "Real-Life- Super-Hero" trend had all but dried up, that is, until I saw this twisted little gem directed by James Gunn. Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page, in my opinion give the performances of their careers. I've been a die- hard fan of "The Office" for the 4 or 5 years, following EVERYTHING that the cast has had to offer in starring roles. This is BY FAR the BEST starring role of any "Office" cast member. Not to mention, I've loved Ellen Page since I saw "Juno" and while I've come to expect the quick- wit of Ellen Page in her film roles, this was something TOTALLY unexpected. Ellen Page's performance was the best of hers I've seen. I would easily put this film in my top 5 of the past decade. It's not for everybody. It's ultra-violent, offensive and sometimes down-right uncomfortable to watch. If you can stomach TRUE emotion and the blurred line between right and wrong, this film is for you.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
While it isn't a hey-day Nightmare film....
It beats the crap out of most of the trash Hollywood horror movies that have come out in the last 10 years or so. While Jackie Earle Haley is no Robert Englund. There are several sadistic lines spoken by Freddy that must be seen to believed. There are some lines that were already spoken in past films (some of which don't even make sense in the situation). The characters aren't anything to care about and that was the key to "Nightmare" films, that everyone seems to miss. Much like "Freddy Vs. Jason, just dumb people with good looks. I've been a fan of the franchise since I was 8, I'm now 28.
While this "movie" isn't great, if we can't have Robert Englund, it should stop here. Not a terrible movie over all.
Zombieland (2009)
This is a film that would make George Romero proud.
I've been a big fan of Romero's work for at least 20 years. While "Zombieland" is a humorous film, it still instills the Romero subtext. In this film, the paranoia, definitely shines, very "Day Of The Dead", like. One very good cameo proves that. All in all, I think this film is a great Zomedy. Right up there with "Shaun Of The Dead", but this is much different. Kudos to the film-makers, this one has Cult-Classic all over it. The semi-star studded cast is brilliant in every way of the word. I thought this film was a great piece of cinema. Woody Harrelson is great, Jesse Eisenburg is surprisingly awesome and Emma Stone is incredibly lovable. This is a great Zombie film, but it still realizes human relationships, amidst Armagedeon. The true greatness of this film is human relationships.
