One quick comment about accents. Although the actors are speaking English none of the characters speak English. They're speaking Comanche or French. The language is an affectation for the media. Similarly for accents. If you heard English spoken in 1722 do you think you could understand or be understood? No.
I loved this film. I found the characters to be believable and interesting, which is a testament to the writing as we hear very little of personal backstories. Naru's journey seemed to flow through story consequences and not through forced plot points. One thing near the end (and which is therefore a spoiler) didn't sit well with me so that's why this is a 9, and not a 10. Also, one bit of CGI pulled me, brechtian-like, out of the movie but I dropped back in easily enough.
It's the usual Predator (unrevamped, as far as I could tell) with the usual motivation (it's either a hunting trip or a right of passage) and the weaponry has been downgraded to match the prey.
The prey-predator dynamic is in every scene. Sometimes a little heavy handed but on the whole very well done. The "what's predator to some is prey to another" message is loud and clear. There's very little comedy in this. An axe play a big part but nobody says "get to the chopper". In fact there are very few back references to Predator (1987). "I'm not a beaver" is about the extent of the comedic dialogue.
A good final showdown followed by a suitable epilogue made the whole experience very worthwhile and if I had seen this in the cinema I would be walking out well pleased.
