Prey Predator Prey
18 August 2022
One quick comment about accents. Although the actors are speaking English none of the characters speak English. They're speaking Comanche or French. The language is an affectation for the media. Similarly for accents. If you heard English spoken in 1722 do you think you could understand or be understood? No.

I loved this film. I found the characters to be believable and interesting, which is a testament to the writing as we hear very little of personal backstories. Naru's journey seemed to flow through story consequences and not through forced plot points. One thing near the end (and which is therefore a spoiler) didn't sit well with me so that's why this is a 9, and not a 10. Also, one bit of CGI pulled me, brechtian-like, out of the movie but I dropped back in easily enough.

It's the usual Predator (unrevamped, as far as I could tell) with the usual motivation (it's either a hunting trip or a right of passage) and the weaponry has been downgraded to match the prey.

The prey-predator dynamic is in every scene. Sometimes a little heavy handed but on the whole very well done. The "what's predator to some is prey to another" message is loud and clear. There's very little comedy in this. An axe play a big part but nobody says "get to the chopper". In fact there are very few back references to Predator (1987). "I'm not a beaver" is about the extent of the comedic dialogue.

A good final showdown followed by a suitable epilogue made the whole experience very worthwhile and if I had seen this in the cinema I would be walking out well pleased.

Evil: S Is for Silence (2021)
Season 2, Episode 7

Stand out episode
25 October 2021
One of the best episodes in two series that works because of the extra work the characters and the actors have to put in. The scene washing the barrels (with whiskey) was so funny, and it was nice to see Kristen happy for a change. The subsequent solution was good, but for God's sake don't diagnose from the internet, call a doctor.

Holiday treat
14 March 2021
Ha! This is a little non-canon treat for the kids with some laughs for the big kids, like me, too. It was nice to hear Jingle Bells in the original Huttese. There are some nice little "passing through" scenes from every film plus Mandalorian, and the (not a spoiler) scene where the entourage land on Tatooine made me laugh out loud. I even enjoyed Trevor Dutall doing his best Mark Hamil doing the Joker doing the Emperor Palpatine. Kylo: "And there's no coming back from that."

Life on Earth

Any program about exobiology is of course going to be speculative. The CGI sequences are very good but are the hook to demonstrate life processes and evolution on Earth. There are filmed parts between the CGI about life on Earth because (and this is worth repeating) this is a program about life processes and evolution on Earth.

Turtle's Progress (1979–1980)
East London low life makes good
28 September 2020
The first series was definitely better than the second. Turtle is a minor East End (of London) thief who in episode one breaks into a safe deposit bank and steals the boxes unopened. In each successive episode he opens a box and uses the contents to his advantage. His 'progress' is into becoming a legitimate (but not completely honest) businessman gaining more money and status each time. There's a cute little love interest sub-plot which works because Turtle is becoming more and more confident. Scene stealer is Lional Attwill as the 'heavy', but who is always Turtle's friend. This was a great comedy drama which I saw when I was 17 and which I really miss today. This show really needs to be re-shown or re-made.

70's Scoob - in a good way
17 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I've just watch Scooby-Doo and Guess who? Batman! I started watching thinking that this was an old 70's cartoon but the crisp animation on a modern TV made me suspicious. And then Velma pulls out a smart phone. This has all the plotting and style and jokes of the classic old Scooby-doo but brought into the 21st century - and is all the better for it. Plus Kevin Conroy and (spoiler alert) Mark Hamil. Oh and the 60's Batmobile. Great fun. Definitely watching the rest of the series.
