The Terminator (1984)
The first R rated movie I saw as a kid but it rocked.
Believe it or not, this was the first R rated movie I saw as a kid in 1990. This was my first love of violent action movies after I saw others but in a more PG level like who framed roger rabbit and the empire strikes back. But even I saw R rated stuff like this, robocop and predator.
In the 80's, no one coined as much catchphrases and kicked so much butt and killed many people like Arnold. Long before he was an old action star in the expendables, he was a hungry actor and after this, he will learn English and get muscular in commando.
The first in a series of 6 chapters, follows Arnold
as the t800, a cold, emotionless, killer cyborg as he kills punks, some woman, wrecking havoc and Sarah Connor, played by Linda Hamilton, a cute teenager working in a dead end job u til the news say that the fake Sarah connor died and her friend said, "you're dead, honey"
Later, the plot gets more tense as the other man from the future is Kyle reese, played by Michael biehn.
I like the scene in a bar called tech noir and some music, which sounds like pat benatar, blasts In the night club. Then just as the t800 tries to shoot, Kyle shoots him and they escape and ran. Then car chases ensue and more mayhem appears. James Cameron knows how to make an action movie.
The finale is cool as they battle the t800.
Let me stop before I spoil it. The music of Brad friedel is a techno score with dark, depeche mode-like, synthesizer blasts and pounding drum machines.
The first movie was a smash hit and begins the long running franchise. It also inspired the anime/cyberpunk craze with appleseed and ghost In the shell. The terminator is my go to action film one of the best of the 80's.
Dr. No (1962)
The one that started it all
This was my dad's favorite movie and all his life he loved Connery era bond. He reads the ian Fleming books and he was an expert on the franchise. The plot, while a bit slow, has a bit of suspense and action.
Honey Ryder, played by the lovely Ursula andress, is my favorite bond girl. The adventure is easy to follow and there are less gadgets than any bond film I saw.
The music has reggae elements and bits of the first bond theme.
All in all, I find it a great spy movie as it plays more like a mystery movie with a plot and Sean played it cool and he says in one of the coolest and often quotable lines "my name is bond, James bond." I give a ten as it was a great debut and he will return.
