We Own This City (2022)
More Like a Documentary
This show is more like a documentary than a story with a dramatic arc. It's very hard for me to watch. I'm not invested in any of the characters, plus it feels and is repetitive. I'm on episode 5 and I just want it to end. It's outrageous that these people, who are completely repellent, got away with this illegal behavior for so long.
The Lincoln Lawyer (2022)
Woefully Miscast
This show is miscast. Unfortunately, the lead actor has no charm or charisma. Tom Ellis, for instance, would have been perfect. Some lightness and humor would help. The actors who play the second wife and the driver are fine.
I'm watching this show mainly because so many originals streaming on other channels are so dark, atmospherically and visually, and depressing right now. (I'm avoiding watching the second episode of 'The Essex Serpent'.)
Outer Range: The West (2022)
Complete Drivel
The billboard says it all. It's an excuse for a complete lack of storytelling ability. The writers don't have to provide a coherent ending, because they don't know what it is; it is the unknown. It's not deep, but very shallow. If there is another season, it will still end like this: a total waste of time. They still have more directions the buffalo herd can run for 10 minutes of airtime. Actually, they could make a whole hour of buffalo running in various directions. A minute of that is breathtaking. Minutes of that is nothing written: no story at all.
Under the Banner of Heaven: When God Was Love (2022)
Riveting Introductory Episode
First of all, Gil Birmingham is fantastic in a meaty, gritty role that he makes his own. He's a fish out of water in this Mormon environment and he stands his own in counterpoint to Andrew Garfield's character's religious anguish. This show has a wonderful cast. It's a religious environment with which I'm not familiar. The tension is palpable, the atmosphere mesmerizing and multilayered. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series.
Anatomy of a Scandal (2022)
Gold-Coasting
This is a story of beautiful, privileged, superficially charming people gold-coasting through life on others' hard work and feelings in shades of grey upper-crust society. There's nothing like the core truth and a delayed knife in the back.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Complete Drivel
This movie is complete drivel, made by smug, woke people for smug, woke audiences. It is boring, contrived, and has nothing to do with the American West. However, it's worst crime is not being interesting or entertaining.
By the way, politically I'm a moderate.
Sam Elliott was right.
A Million Little Things (2018)
Each Episode Is More Disappointing Than the Last
I've watched this show since its first episode. It has become increasingly whiny and preachy. I may stop watching it altogether. I want entertainment, not stress.
Severance (2022)
Monotonous, Boring
I'm lifelong, hard-core insomniac. I dozed off 3/4 of the way through the first episode. Maybe I should continue to watch just so I can fall asleep. I found it to be unbearably depressing and gloomy.
And Just Like That...: Seeing the Light (2022)
Perfect Set-Up for a New Season
Miranda and Che are leaving for LA. As far as I am concerned, they can permanently remain there. I would like to see Seema as a full-time cast member.
Carrie is starting a new chapter with her own podcast and, possibly, a new man.
Charlotte is learning to make adjustments in her life.
And, maybe, Samantha will come back.
I see glimmers of hope.
The Gilded Age (2022)
A Story of Its Time and Place
This is a very specific story of the time in NY when new money families were encroaching on old money family's social circles. It did happen.
Many of you are not interested in this story. Don't watch it. I'm interested in it.
It was a more formal time. People did speak somewhat stiffly.
I've been looking forward to this show for years, so I'm going to give it a chance.
And Just Like That... (2021)
The Most Interesting Character
Seema is the best character on this show. She is smart, sophisticated, tough, jaded, relatable, and interesting. These are characteristics the three main characters don't have. The most important characteristic is, of course, interesting. I would like to see a show with Seema and Samantha. Now that would be a New York match. Anthony would fit in well with them, too.
And Just Like That...: Tragically Hip (2021)
Read the Room
Read the room: know your audience. The creators of this show are lost in their own personal agendas, which has resulted in an incredibly boring and insulting show. I loved this show in its first incarnation. This show is a slap in the face to the viewers who loved these characters.
Without Samantha, who brought a sorely needed light touch, this show is dull and ponderous. I thoroughly dislike the Che character. They are too aggressive and don't fit in. I hate the podcast. Carrie has said ridiculous things. I find her increasingly silly. Miranda would simply not evolve this way with her husband and her son, although a Lesbian relationship could fit in, just not with Che. Charlotte seems irrelevant.
Where is the joy? There isn't any. I like those other new characters. Maybe they should have bigger story lines. Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte's story lines are weak. I find myself not liking these characters as much as I used to.
Modern Love (2019)
Pandemic Blahs
Many of us have felt physically limited by the pandemic. I've watched several series lately that are just so so. I see little life and a definite lack of energy. Season 2 fits that description, with a couple of exceptions.
The first episode was very good. The third episode felt incomplete, but started with great promise. The last episode was very emotional, but satisfying.
I just wanted more energy and life, at least some excitement.
Mr. Corman (2021)
Boring
One of the most boring shows I have ever seen. I forced myself to watch the first two episodes. It was excruciating to see this mind-numbing series featuring a totally unsympathetic, alienating character. Watching golf or bowling might be slightly more interesting.
Possessions (2020)
Intriguing Beginning, Disappointing Ending
In HBO Max, closed captioning can be turned on where your initial is at the top left of the page.
I thought the first few episodes were intriguing, until I decided she killed Alex. To me, it devolved into a slasher movie. Karim kept saying Nathalie was so intelligent, but she had no emotion, personality, or obvious intelligence. She was a cypher onto whom men obsessively projected their ideal woman, someone who needed rescuing.
This Is Us (2016)
Whiny and boring
This show has become predictable, with characters that are whiny, and boring. Kevin is he only interesting character now. I hope he survives. I liked Randall much better when he was successful in his business career. Life is depressing enough without these depressing characters.
The Right Stuff (2020)
Boring
Tom Wolfe's books were wild rides with rhythm and personality. This series is devoid of momentum and personality.
It was a huge mistake to leave Chuck Yeager out. His story was a great framing device for both the book and the movie. He defined "the right stuff".
