Sylvie's Love (2020)
A remarkable scenography still fails to make up for a shallow, redundant drama
It pains me to write such a negative review of a film that looks and sounds so beautiful. Costumes, soundtrack, scenery, scenography, mood and atmosphere are wonderful, then acting is good and it's amazing to immerse oneself in the lovely atmosphere of the 50s and 60s in NYC.
Although wrapped in a brilliant gold paper, Sylvie's Love is as trite as they come. The characters are shallow and act out of whims, their motivations non existent and their evolution as people is just as bad.
Especially the love story, which supposed to swipe us off our feet, is callously redundant, stereotypical and based on tired tropes that should be honestly over in 2020: a woman is engaged to a man at war in North Korea, has an affair with another man, a musician that ends up living her to go on tour in Europe.
They meet again 5 years later. Guess what happens.
It is cheating and lying still considered romantic? Was it ever? We need to talk.
Mozart in the Jungle (2014)
Delightful, a musical balm for the soul
I would watch anything with Gael García Vernal in it, but I think he found his place with Rodrigo, eclectic, passionate and gifted conductor. The soundtrack is great and the honesty of the show is admirable: talent is not enough to succeed, but no talent is ever enough if you don't play with 'the blood'. And yet to survive thanks to one's art is one of the most difficult goals to achieve, even at the highest levels. The show is funny, honest, eclectic and dynamic. Original and deep, but it doesn't take itself too seriously.
The delightful soundtrack is a plus. If you like classic music with a twist, give it a chance.
Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)
Gentrification...bites
A funny and intelligent comedy about the blood-sucking business of gentrification.
An estate agency starts buying out the Bronx. Three friends want to save the neighborhood bodega but step into a dangerous business.
Lighthearted but poignant, the film is a coming of age story in the Bronx, with a twist. A sweet, quirky tale of friendship, courage, integrity and the resilience of a community against the evil forces of exploitation and corporate invasion.
It reminded me of Attack the Block, the 2011 film with John Boyega, but lighter.
Parks and Recreation (2009)
Watch now thank us all later
Once you've gotten through a bit confusing first season (the characters come out a bit strong and they don't satisfy all palates), you are there, in the magical, serene, feel good and never give up amazing world of parks and recs. In spite of the many failures, the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee, Indiana, theatre of many wins and losses, adverted tragedies and unforgivable characters, will be your home for 7 seasons, and show you the real meaning of friendship, determination, self discovery and... Scrapbooks! The perfect show for these uncertain and tragic times, Leslie Knope and her team will keep you company with the right amount of disillusionment, commitment, OCD and libertarianism... Also a tiny horse called Little Sebastian, plenty of breakfast food and rivers of wine 🌈☀🎆
Power Book II: Ghost (2020)
It's a crime teen drama and a bad one.
I couldn't watch Power either, to be honest, but this? I don't know if it's a teen drama or a crime show, it's bad both ways. The characters are not credible or believable, the drama is just ridiculous, situations beyond laughable. Grown people acting like teenagers and teenagers acting like gangsters. The script is often convoluted for absolutely no reason but it never goes anywhere.
