Black Robe (1991)
10/10
A Terrible Beauty
13 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
For a number of reasons, this movie is dear to my heart, the greatest of which took me thirty years to realize. Ostensibly, Black Robe presents a tale about a Jesuit priest seeking to convert the Huron Indians. It is so much more, as anyone who has seen it can attest, and finally, so much less. The priest, not his mission, is the point of the story, of his path of 'salvation', his discovery of the reality of the love of God. From beginning to end, God is the author of his steps, leading him to know the love of God in him, Everything along the way is an assist to bring him to the final scene when he realizes and declares it.

A Gifted Man (2011–2012)
10/10
Does the High Rating Get Your Attention?
19 June 2021
I can't believe I'm offering my opinion on A Gifted Man for public consumption. Ignore my rating; it's a come-on. What interests me is not the show itself so much as my reaction to it. It's easy to find fault. It's a TV medical drama, and behaves like it. Still, I keep watching it. It's also easy to find positive things about the show as well. Now that all of the episodes are no longer available for purchase online (why that would be is a mystery), I've spent what I consider to be a good chunk of money on the DVD set (through the back door of eBay) so that I can watch the now missing episodes. A lost treasure recovered? Really? I don't know if you, dear reader, have experienced this predicament, where you watch TV shows you can't justify to anyone, you just watch them. Again and again.

Quirke (2013–2014)

Read the Books
12 April 2021
I'm glad to see that there are users who enjoyed the series. And there were those who didn't. To both camps, may I recommend that you give a look to the novels on which this series is based? Benjamin Black's Quirk plots are an excuse to display language that is a both joy and a marvel to behold. It's unfair to ask that the richness and complexities of these books be translated to a TV series. Even so, watching, I kept thinking, 'There is so much more.' To the naysayers of the series, if nothing else, may its existence lead you to give the books a try.

On another note, I thoroughly enjoyed Stanley Townsend's Inspector Hackett. Just right.

A wonder
14 February 2021
A delightful creative writing teacher ran this in her class, circa 1966. Twice. Marcel Marceau portrays park visitors from small children to lovers (both at once). I was among the students, and have not forgotten it. My wife and I are watching his story in the movie Resistance, prompting a search to show her Mr. Marceau in action. Still hunting.
